[DID NOT ATTEND: July 18, 2024] Fucked Up / Chastity

I saw Fucked Up back in July of 2022 and would like to see them again.

They’ve been around a few times since then and things never seem to quite work out.  I was excited about this show because I’m fond of The Ukie Club as a venue.  But then we wound up scheduling dinner with friends and this was the only night available for that.  So, sadly I had to miss them again.

But it sounds like  they’ll be back again soon.

Chastity is a one-man band project from Ontario

is for the skids, the headbangers, the freaks. Chastity is for everyone who has suffered and survived the lethal combination of suburban overculture and mental distress. Chastity is especially for everyone who didn’t survive—the ones who didn’t get out. Brandon Williams did, luckily, and his work with Chastity has been to collect people like him, who got out by the skin of their teeth.

They play surprisingly catchy (with great guitar lines and sing along choruses) song given the angst mentioned and the fact that they are opening for Fucked Up.

I’d have really enjoyed this show I think.

[DID NOT ATTEND: October 29, 2023] The Damned / Baby Shakes / Fucked Up

It’s hard to believe I had three opportunities to check out his show.  I had originally blown it off thinking I didn’t care for The Damned enough to go to any of them.  But then the first show was situated right between two other shows–three nights in a row is a challenge.  Then the next two, including this one, were scheduled for nights that I already had a ticket to a show.

And maybe I wanted to see The Dammed, now, but I wanted to see Hooveriii much more.

I doubt they’ll come back again, but who knows.

[DID NOT ATTEND: October 27, 2023] The Damned / Baby Shakes / Fucked Up

Once I started listening to The Damned after realizing I would miss this show I realized how much I do actually like them.  And here was one more opportunity to see them.

I don’t really like The Stone Pony–every time I’ve been there I’ve had a crowd I didn’t care for.

But it didn;t matter because my wife and I had tickets to see My Morning Jacket tonight and there was no way we were passing up that show.  Certainly not so I could run off to Asbury Park.

[DID NOT ATTEND: April 27, 2023] Fucked Up / Gnawing / Restraining Order

I saw Fucked Up back in July of last year and never thought they’d be back again so soon.  Of course they are super prolific, so why shouldn’t their touring schedule be, too.

I was really excited to see them again because the last show was intense and a ton of fun.

But I wound up doing a ton of yard work during the day (I had taken the day off from work).  And by the time it was time to go out, I was exhausted.  I even felt asleep during the show hours, so it’s probably best I wasn’t driving.  But it sounds like they’ll be back soon enough.

Gnawing describes themselves as a loud rock and roll band that wishes they were a country band.  They come across as more of a sloppy indie rock band from the 90s and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Restraining Order is pretty much straight up hardcore punk.  They would have been a fun opener.

[ATTENDED: July 17, 2022] Fucked Up [moved from January 23, 2021]

I’ve been intrigued by Canadian band Fucked Up since I first heard of them. Obviously they had no intention of getting mainstream success with a name like that.  And yet, their music has turned heads.

Which is also a bit of a puzzle because, while it can be very, very catchy, lead singer Pink Eyes screams like the lyrics are comic from the pit of his soul (although you can actually understand most of what he says, which is a neat trick).

Pink Eyes is Damian Abraham who had led the band since 2001.

Fascinatingly, the band won the Polaris Prize in 2009 (for an album with mostly guest vocalists).  They followed up that album with david Comes to Life in 2011–a rock opera set in 1970s and 1980s England. The story involves unreliable narrators and meta-narrative plot devices.

And so it was that in 2021, they were going to do a ten year anniversary and pay the album front to back.  It was postponed, but, undaunted, they pressed on in 2022.

I had never seen Fucked Up before, but had a pretty good idea what to expect.  And yet they exceeded any expectation.

The band came out on stage while a projection of the band with their logo was on the screen behind them.  They played the opening song (an instrumental) and then Damian came out in sweatpants, and a black vinyl glove (he later revealed that he had cut his hand and this was protecting his from getting blood everywhere).  He proceeded to do his screaming thing. Pony (Underground Arts, Philadelphia, PA, July 17, 2022) [FUCKED UP] [rescheduled]

[ATTENDED: July 17, 2022] Pony [moved from January 23, 2021]

I had not heard of Pony before this show.  I was interested in hearing the original opening band, Empath, who are a Philly band that play a kind of noise punk.  Rolling Stone says “They sound like four people who sat in a room flexing their own freaky styles until — before they realized their interests might be wholly incompatible — the chaos created its own logic.”  They sound pretty great.

But Pony are a pop punk band from Toronto and they were fantastic.

Pony is fronted by Sam Bielanski who plays guitar and sings.  She is also a voice actress and voiced Jazz in My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale (hence the band name).

For a couple of songs at the end Sam didn’t play guitar she just sang and dominated the stage, stomping around in Doc Martins and a plaid skirt. (more…)

[POSTPONED: January 23, 2021] Fucked Up / Empath [moved to July 17, 2022]

indexI’ve known Fucked Up for a few years and thought that they’d be a wild band to see.  They last played in Philly in 2018, and they’ve only gotten better since then.

Shows had been getting postponed, but this one was pretty hushed until only a few days ago when it was officially postponed.

I’m okay with it getting moved to July–I much prefer going out to shows in the warm weather than the frigid cold of January anyway.

[POSTPONED CANCELLED: August 20, 2020] Sheer Mag / Young Guv [rescheduled from May 15]

indexUPDATE: I’m not technically sure what the difference is between a postponed and a cancelled show in this time of COVID.  This show was changed from postponed to cancelled on October 19.  I assume that Sheer Mag will be back at Boot & Saddle one day, maybe it’s just a technicality for their books.

Who would have guessed back in may that a show postponed to August would get postponed again?  Well, the CDC I suppose.

Since Sheer Mag is a Philly band, they will be back.  But I was looking forward to seeing Young Guv.  Hope he gets to come along next time.

I saw Sheer Mag a couple of years ago and found their set to be fun and energetic.  I haven’t gotten any of their music because they refuse to put anything out as a CD.

Their sound is so strangely old school rock that it’s hard for me to believe they are a new band made up of young musicians.

I didn’t think I’d need to see them again, but it’s always fun to see bands at Boot & Saddle, especially with a home town crowd.  They have rescheduled for two dates in the fall and fortunately my ticket will be applied to the night I am free.
