resist2SOUNDTRACK: SIERRA LEONE’S REFUGEE ALL STARS-Tiny Desk Concert #118 (April 6, 2011).

sierraSierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars are famous for their story.  Its members met in refugee camps during Sierra Leone’s civil war and formed a band to spread joy during an otherwise difficult time.  But the band’s music is what has stood the test of time.  Ten years, two albums and an award-winning documentary later, these eight men are still riding that upbeat reggae groove.

The band consists of three drummers (all with hand-held drums) and one percussionist.  There’s 2 guitars (one electric and one acoustic) a bass and everybody sings.  Their music has a reggae feel, although it’s not exactly reggae, I don’t think.

“Jah Come Down” opens the show. The acoustic guitar keeps the melody while the electric guitar plays a riff throughout.  Occasionally the bass comes in with a cool line or two adding a nice low end.

“Living Stone” has a different singer (the percussionist).  His vocals are a bit more mellow, as this song is.  It’s amazing to see the age range of the players.

“Tamagbondorsu (The Rich Mock The Poor)” is the final song.  It opens with a guitar lick that reminded me of Paul Simon’s Graceland until i re-thought and realized that Graceland sounded like this.

The songs are fun and lively, perfect for dancing (as the singer does during the long instrumental outro).  Most reggae sounds the same to me, and these three songs do tend to blend together quite a lot.  But the music is fun and the players’ skill is undeniable.

[READ: December 4, 2015] Defiance

This book is set three years into the Nazi occupation of France.  Things are sort of the same but worse for the residents of Vichy.  Neighbors inform on neighbors, and some residents collaborate with the Germans (and are more successful because of it).  And then in 1943, a new French-based Nazi police force called the Milice begin keeping watch over their own people

This aggressiveness causes more resistance, of course. And Paul has been drawing detailed and insulting pictures and posting them all over town (which is making the Milice quite upset).

Of course the kids are taking more aggressive stances now, too.  Some say that the posters are causing more harm because it makes the police mad.  But other kids’ parents have joined the police–some of whom are nice to the kids.  Even Paul’s sister, Marie, believes what her teachers say about Marshall Philippe Pétain (there’s a lesson about Pétain at the end of the book) and his governance.  And no one is going to say anything about the Resistance.   (more…)

resistSOUNDTRACK: LUISA MAITA-Tiny Desk Concert #100 (December 26, 2010).

maitaI’ve not heard of Maita.  The NPR write up speaks about the electronic flourishes and deep grooves of her songs.  Felix Contreras worried that their stripped down ensemble (only guitar, bass and fascinating bongos) would have a hard time creating that sound.

And in one way they do.  Except that it’s clear they didn’t even try.  Rather, they play a simple, but engaging kind of mellow Brazilian dance music.  In the first song, “Ai Vem Ele,” the guitar and bass play the same grooves except when they each take some meandering moments.  The percussion keeps a quiet but steady rhythm and Maita sings vocals and accent notes all over the place to keep the song interesting.  I really enjoyed at the end of the song when the bassist played exactly the vamping solo that she was singing.

“Alento” is a much faster song, with quickly sung lyrics.  It allows for rapid guitar playing and more uptempo feel.

They only play two songs (about 8 minutes long), but it really shows the kind of range she is capable of.

[READ: December 1, 2015] Resistance

This First Second graphic novel is about the Nazi occupation of France.  It’s not exactly light reading and yet Jablonski has taken this incredibly dark story and found an excellent and compelling narrative about one family who works as part of the resistance to fight back against their oppressors.

This is the first book in a trilogy and I am curious to see what the next two books bring as this story was nicely wrapped up but there are so many more stories which could be told.

Jablonski also helpfully sets up the situation in the introduction.  She explains how France was split in two as a result of the armistice agreement.  She gives a very brief but powerful explanation for why they would agree to splitting their country in half.  Paris and the upper portion of France became Occupied while Vichy and the southern part of France were “Free” (but still with a large Nazi presence).

This story is about an average family.  Paul Tessier and his parents and little sister live in the free part of France. Paul is an artist, and I love the way Purvis juxtaposes Paul’s art with what is actually happening (placing Paul’s “drawing” in the middle of the action so we know he is observing everything. dramaSOUNDTRACK: SHARON JONES AND THE DAP-KINGS-Tiny Desk Concert #497 (December 21, 2015).

sharonTo end out the Tiny Desk Christmas season, I chose this year’s entry.  And for this year’s Christmas show, they went all out.  There’s lights strung around the office, there’s twinkling gold tinsel behind them, presenting a wall of glitter, and a sign that says Dappy Holidays.

I don’t love Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (I often feel like I am the only person who doesn’t).  I’m not a big fan of the blues or of soul music, so there is that.  But then I heard her blues version of “Silent Night” and it is a travesty.  “Silent Night” is a beautiful tender song.  If done right, it can make you cry.  But this is just dreadful. You don’t make “calm” a ten syllable word.  You don’t sing “talkin ’bout a Silent Night.”  You don’t make this song fun.  You don’t show off you crooning skills with this song.  You just sing it.  Perfectly.

When she’s not tinkering with classics, though, Jones has some good fun with two originals.  The first is the fun “8 Days of Hanukkah” She sings about all the things they’ll do on each day–spin the dreidel, roll out the latkes, and the best: “we’re cooking up the brisket the kosher butcher sold my uncle Saul,”  It’s a lot of fun (when the horns launch into the dreidel song amid their jamming it’s a good time).  This is the kind of soul that I like–lots of swinging horns and good times.

And Sharon herself seems like a fun person–she asks for help remembering the lyrics to the final song and plays it off in a fun way.

“Big Bulbs” is another original.  It’s also funny with the lyrics, “Baby you got them big bulbs flashing in your windows tonight.”  IT seems like it’s a double entendre but I don’t really think it is, it’s just fun.

Despite my aversion to the first song, she totally won me over with the second two songs, and I’d happily add those to any holiday mix.

[READ: December 10, 2015] Drama

I really enjoyed Telgemeier’s Smile and Sisters.  But I enjoyed Drama even more.

This story is an ode to everyone who works behind the scenes at the drama club.  But it’s also a chance for the stars to shine and the shy kids to come out too.  All done in Telgemeier’s delightfully simple yet effective drawing and storytelling style.

Callie is in love with the drama club.  She works late on sets, she loves seeing things come to completion.  She also knows she has no talent to be on stage.

And things are good.  Until the drama arises.  Greg and Matt are her friends.  Greg is a little older and Callie has a crush on him.  When Greg tells her that his girlfriend Bonnie broke up with him, she is pretty excited.  And they share a kiss.  But from that moment on, not only does Greg avoid her, but Matt is a jerk to her, too.  Not bad for the first few pages. 1967 SOUNDTRACK: JULIAN LAGE TRIO-Tiny Desk Concert #140 (July 7, 2011).

lageJulian Lage is a jazz guitar prodigy.  he normally plays with a quintet but for this set he brought only a trio which includes bassist Jorge Roeder and percussionist Tupac Mantilla.

This was my first exposure to Lage and he does some really impressive lines and riffs.  He plays a hollow-bodied electric guitar that sounds an awful lot like an acoustic guitar. He does some phrasings that are really pretty or really interesting

But I was more impressed with Mantilla on percussion.  He uses thick brushes, he uses his hands on bongos and cymbals.  He uses his hands on his body–playing his lap and chest).  He even uses little dusts brooms (which must be unwieldy).  He’s also got some kind of drum (perhaps a loose snare?) with a great sound and even a bell.

They play three songs.  “Welcoming Committee” is a new song not recorded as of then.  At the end of the song, they all laugh as an office phone rings the end.  Julian is a sweet funny guy with some interesting stories about his songs.

“However” is an upbeat bouncy song (with some less noodling).  Interestingly, it was written by their saxophonist who is not playing in the trio today.

Before introducing the final song “Untitled (No. 24)” he says he started a blog for inspiration–to get people to bounce ideas off each other–healthy peer pressure with incentives for song writers.  The most recent one was a song a day for 30 days.  This was number 24.  (Hhe jokes that the first 23 sucked).  It’s a really fun piece that doesn’t feel incomplete at all.

It’s 1967 and Schulz has had huge success with Snoopy’s Red Baron plots.  In December 1966 The Royal Guardsmen made a song called “Snoopy Vs the Red Baron” which made it to number 2 on the charts.  So The Red Baron plot takes over a lot of this year.  And while I enjoy seeing him like that and I get how it’s funny, I don’t really like it all that much–the jokes are too samey for me.  But despite all of the Red Baron excitement there are other things going on this year too.  Like the introduction of the Easter Beagle.  And of Franklin!

The kids get involved in many different sports this year.  In Feb 1967 Lucy begins arm wrestling (and beating) everyone.  She even takes on the Masked Marvel (Snoopy).  In Oct 1967 Snoopy plays hockey for the first time (I think).  He references Bobby Hull).  Later in Jan 1968 all the kids play hockey together.  Lucy beats everyone up and say how much she likes the game.  And at one point Snoopy smiles and is missing teeth.  In Oct 1968 Snoopy shoots and scores (on his doghouse) and says “they’re not sleeping well in Montreal tonight.”

In December 1967 Snoopy considers going to the Olympics in France for his ice skating.  He says he misses skating with Sonja Henie).  In April 1968 Snoopy is going to the Masters in Augusta.  When that doesn’t work out (we never see him there), later in April Snoopy is a wrist wrestler who is going to go to Petaluma for the world competition.  (There are many jokes about Petaluma).  Snoopy is disqualified because he has no thumbs.

In August 1968 Snoopy says “jogging is my thing.”  And in Nov 1968 we learn that Snoopy has a pool table but that Minnesota Fats won’t play him.

And of course there is baseball.

Peppermint Patty comes back in March 1967 to play against Charlie’s team.  She has a new player, Jose Peterson, who doesn’t really hang out in the strip for very long, but who is an awesome slugger.  In November of 1967, there’s a reference to the lousy New York Mets.  I didn’t realize it but at the time of this strip, the New York Mets were a recent expansion club with a terrible record.

In summer of 1967 Charlie and snoopy return to camp and they see Peppermint Patty is there.  Patty strikes out Charlie a whole bunch and says she considered letting him hit one but he wouldn’t want that, right?

In march of 1968 snoopy takes over as manager and is really mean.

And of course, Snoopy has a lot going on too.  We learn that August 10 is Snoopy’s birthday.  He also says a lot of things are gauche.

In a very funny skit, in May 1968 Snoopy watches a bird chomp a worm and then says “I’m going to be very very very very very very very very sick.”

June 1968 introduces Lila again, and how Snoopy pines for her.  Then in August she writes to Snoopy again.  And finally on Aug 24 we meet Lila for the first time.  Lila is a girl in the hospital.  But it’s not until the end of the month that we learn that Lila was Snoopy’s previous owner who lived in an apartment and had to get rid of him.  AND THAT’S ALL THAT’S SAID ABOUT IT!

On a lighter note, in March Snoopy pretends to be a piranha for a few strips.  In April 1967 there’s some Cheshire cat jokes from snoopy (who is only a smile)  April 1968 sees the first mention of the Easter Beagle (Lucy doesn’t believe Linus who is the only one to see him).

Linus and Lucy pop up a lot of course.  They revisit a lot of the same ideas with variations.  In August Linus’ grandma agrees to give up smoking to get Linus to give up his blanket.  He thinks she’ll never do it, but he goes through the real withdrawal.

In Dec 1967 Lucy ups her psychiatrist booth’s price to 7 cents (winter rates).  And then as the book ends in Dec 1968, Linus is taking shorthand notes for her.

Father’s Day this year had Peppermint Patty writing a card.  She says that her dad calls her a “rare gem,”  This phrase is used as a joke in the strip and then a few more times.

It seems like summer is a good time for new things as well.  There are two weeks of strips starring Peppermint Patty at camp!  She is a counselor of littler kids.  There is a little girl who looks like Marcie but isn’t (her name is Clara).  And then later that week another little girl, Sophie, calls her “Sir.”

And then July 31, 1968 introduces Franklin!  He and Charlie play at the beach for a few days.

Religion pops up from time in the strips, especially with quotes from the Bible.  But in March 1967, Violet asks Charlie if they go to church.  He says yes, but she says her family “used to…now they belong to a coffee house.”  And in April Schulz revisits the “here’s the church gag.”

[From the Peanuts wikia] On February 8, 1963, Sally watches while her big brother uses his hands to illustrate that old rhyme: “Here’s the church…here’s the steeple…open the door…and see all the people!” After carefully examining his closed fingers, she announces, “It looks like a rather small congregation!” Four years later, on April 8, 1967, Sally watches as Linus delivers the same rhyme…and then she provides an almost exact response: “Sort of a small congregation.”

Most of the strips are totally timeless, with me even thinking that I read some of them when I was much older than I did.  I can’t say as I remember a lot of specific strips, but I always remember the one from Dec 5, 1968 (which is from before I was born, so I obviously read it in a collection).  Peppermint Patty says that it snowed last night Her dad says that “when it snows you should always take a slice of bread out for the birds.”  She places a whole slice on the bird’s head.

I think the timelessness of the strips are what make reading these volumes so much fun.

In May 1967, Charlie asks Linus if he wants to be the first man on the moon.

In July 1967, the bird (unnamed yet) has “long hair” and Snoopy calls him a bird hippie.

Charlie writes to his pencil pal in Nov 1967 and says, “According to what I read, your country hates my country and my country hates your country.  I don’t hate you, and I don’t think you hate me.  I think about this a lot.  It makes sleeping at nigh very difficult.”

In Jan 1968, the girls are going to have a “crab-in.”

Dec 18 1968 Snoopy has a sled and Charlie looks at it and says “Rosebud?”

In June 1968, Snoopy says he thinks he is in love with Twiggy.

In August, Snoopy says that you never hear anyone sing “Chloe” anymore (although which song that is, I’m not sure.  Perhaps the Al Jolson one).

In Nov, Snoopy says he is feeling groovy (the Simon and Garfunkel song came out in 1966).

There are references to the election year with the birds holding ups signs that say ? and !!  Snoopy say he’ll vote for the one with the paw print on it.

My two favorite jokes in the book have to do with math.

Sally is trying to learn her times table and guesses answers like “Four-thousand six? elventy-twelve? fifty quillion? overly-eight?  twiddelty-two?”  Then she  asks “Am I getting close?” And Charlie responds, “Actually it’s kind of hard to say.”

In Dec 1968, Peppermint Patty says she loves numbers.  “Twos are sort of gentle, threes and fives are mean, a four is always pleasant.  I like sevens and eights too, too but nines always scare me.  Tens are great.”  When a classmate asks if she has prepared her division homework, she says “Nothing spoils number faster than a lot of arithmetic.”

In my edition the May 1 strip is repeated instead of the May 3rd strip! (The missing strip will apparently be printed at the end of the next book).

John Waters give the best foreword yet.  He actually references strips in this book!

He says he became obsessed with peanuts when he had mono in 6th grade.  He loves the depression paranoia and delusions.   But John was all about Lucy.  He loves her politics, her manners “Get out of my way!” her narcissism and her rants.   He says he has a niece named Lucy and Schulz got the expression perfect when she yells “No” on page 61.

He also says that for the most part the strips don’ age at all (with a few exceptions).  He talks about Lucy shouting “police brutality” at Charlie as a crossing guard!  He also says that Schulz was criticized for including the minority characters (which is shocking).  Waters is also fascinated by characters like Roy who are rarely if ever heard.

Pig-Pen was an inspiration for Dingy Dave in A Dirty Shame; Divine cutting up her daughter’s jump rope in Female Trouble is inspired from a Peanuts strip.

He sums up with the attitude that Peanuts presents:

You are dealt a hand.  Deal with it.  But most importantly he teaches all ages that if you can learn to laugh at the things that cause you the most pain, you will be the strongest of all.

gryphosnSOUNDTRACK: FLACO JIMENEZ-Tiny Desk Concert #250 (November 12, 2012).

flacoFlaco Jimenez has been playing button accordion for almost six decades.  He’s played with The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Dr. John, Los Lobos, Willie Nelson and Ry Cooder.  His grandfather started playing an accordion in cantinas and family parties along the Texas/Mexican border around the late 1800s. Then Flaco’s dad, Santiago Jimenez Sr., carried on the family tradition when he released his first record in 1936.

The accordion that Flaco uses is so tiny and yet he is all over the place with it–fingers flying everywhere.  The NPR site describes his longevity as lying in the short bursts of improvisation in between verses.  He will actually not playing anything for a measure and then fly when it’s his turn.   He is accompanied by bajo sexto player Max Baca, who keeps a great rhythm and accompaniment.

They play three songs.

  • “Margarita”  was written by Flaco’s dad in “nineteen hundred and throw it away.”
  • “La Paloma”  is a fun instrumental.
  • “Cada Vez Que Cae La Tarde”  sounds German (many of these original melodies were but they had changed the lyrics to Spanish).

Before this final song he asks if they want a honky tonk (he plays a little riff), but he changes his mind and says lets polka.

I hadn’t kept up on my plan to read all of the First Second books, so as the year draws to an end, I decided to grab a few of the kids books, which I figured would be quick and would allow me to check off a few on the list (since they keep publishing more, I have to keep up).

I found two books by the creators of Adventures in Cartooning, a series of book which I haven’t read but which look like a lot of fun.

These two books are tiny graphic stories for very little kids–the art and story are very simple.  And they are both really fun.

Gryphons Aren’t So Great continues the story of the knight (actually the two stories are completely separate and can be read in either order).  As this story opens, the knight is riding Edward super fast down a hill.  When they get to the end…they jump! (more…)

knights SOUNDTRACK: RENAUD GARCIA-FONS-Tiny Desk Concert #238 (August 27, 2012).

renaudRenaud Garcia-Fons plays the double bass.  He was born in France to a family with roots in the Catalonia region of Spain, and he’s fluent in French, Spanish and English.  He easily switches between classical, jazz and flamenco.  And he plays the double bass in a way that I’ve never seen before.  As “Aqua Jan” opens he is tapping the strings with his bow, creating a very cool hammering effect and what sounds like very fast picking (but with a bow).  Then the song switches to a more traditional bowing style and Renaud’s fingering is amazing to watch.  He returns briefly back to the bouncing bow at the end.

The second song is “Hacia Compostela.”  Compostela is a holy place in the north of Spain.  It is a song about going to holy city.  He opens the song with some harmonics (which he loops).  It never occurred to me you could do harmonics on a double bass.  And then he’s on to some lovely fretless bass playing.  Then it’s on to some more bowing–very high-pitched and almost electronic sounding–it’s very cool.   Back to some incredibly fast bowing and amazing finger work.  The loops (I’m not sure when he was recording them, but they kept changing), add some great bass notes and some sort of percussive elements too).

The final song, “Rock Wandering” he introduces as saying that since most of you are standing, I w ill play something that is dancing.

It opens with more of that tapping style (and feels like rock chords the way he plays it).  He makes them looping backing chords as he just goes to town with the virtuoso playing on the strings.  He gives any guitarist a run for his money on the solos.  It’s astonish to watch.

I hadn’t kept up on my plan to read all of the First Second books, so as the year draws to an end, I decided to grab a few of the kids books, which I figured would be quick and would allow me to check off a few on the list (since they keep publishing more, I have to keep up).

I found two books by the creators of Adventures in Cartooning, a series of book which I haven’t read but which look like a lot of fun.

These two books are tiny graphic stories for very little kids–the art and story are very simple.  And they are both really fun.

Sleepless Knight is the story of the knight (who is a little stick figure kinda guy with a knight’s helmet on) and his horse Edward.  As the story opens they are planning for the best camping trip ever!

Poor Edward is laden down with so much stuff (including a cactus and a scooter).  And while the knights considers that maybe he over packed, it doesn’t stop him from filing up a huge sack full of stuff.

After a brief hike, they stop to camp (the visual joke is very funny). (more…)

1965 SOUNDTRACK: TIME FOR THREE-Tiny Desk Concert #291 (July 27, 2013).

time for 3Time for Three are a string trio who play many types of music.  There are two violinists Zachary De Pue and Nick Kendall with a double bassist Ranaan Meyerand.  And over the course of their three songs (all original) they play classical, jazz, bluegrass and just about everything in between.

“Banjo Love,” features two contrary violin solos which get support from Meyer’s expressively propulsive bass.  It opens with the two guys strumming the violins before breaking into some lovely bowed playing.  Both violinists switch off solos (the blond player is a bit faster and more “showoffy” (but great)).  There’s even a bit of a bass solo after which the three guys all make a big grunt before continuing to the end of the song.

They say they are honored to be on the Tiny Desk series and compliment them on their new offices.

“Sundays” is a slow piece that features lots interesting bass parts behind the slow violin melodies.

They have funny stories about the origins of their songs.  “Don Don” is so named because the baseline goes don… don.  This has more of a bluegrass fiddle feel than a classical feel.  It’s super fast and fun with perfect slides and solos to really keep the song moving.

The notes say that they wished the guys played more, and I do too.  Interestingly I see that they have covered Daft Punk and Kanye West, so I guess they’re up for just about anything.

[READ: December 8, 2015] The Complete Peanuts 1965-1966

A whole bunch of ideas that I think of as BIG PEANUTS ideas come along in this book.  May of 1965 introduced the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm and Snoopy’s desire to meet his siblings.   In July of 1965 we get the first instance of snoopy at the typewriter writing “it was a dark and stormy night.”  We see Charlie Brown refer to the tree as a “kite eating tree” for the first time.  In July 1965 it’s the first time I can recall seeing the phrase “jelly bread.”  It’s the first appearance of Snoopy as Beau, the World War 1 flying ace (Oct 1965).  And in September 1966 we get the first appearance of Peppermint Patty!

The pop culture references seem to have dimmed somewhat too, although in January 1965, Linus cries “Annette Funicello has grown up!”

The “Happiness is” quotes are fewer, although Lucy squeezes Snoopy and says “Felicitas est parvus canis calidus,” which is Latin for “Happiness is a Warm Puppy.”   Of course later when he kisses her she freaks out “get some disinfectant, get some iodine” and he says “next time I’ll bite her on the leg.”

Linus’ blanket also takes on a mind of its own in March 1965 actually hissing at and attacking Lucy. (more…)

juiaSOUNDTRACK: AVI AVITAL-Tiny Desk Concert #239 (September 12, 2012).

aviAvi Avital plays a mandolin. But he doesn’t ply bluegrass. Indeed, much like the Punch Brothers covering Debussy, Avital uses the mandolin to play more classical type of music.  He is the first mandolinist to be nominated for a Grammy in the Best Instrumental Soloist category.

He has had this mandolin for about thirteen years and he loves it.  He has been using the same Israel lutier since he was 17, exchanging them until he found this one.  And he can really play the heck out of it.

He plays only two songs in the ten minute concert, but they really showcase his skills.

“Nigun” was written by Ernest Bloch in 1923 for violin and piano.  NPR says Avital’s arrangement, like the original, pivots between the ecstatic and the introspective, rising in intensity (and pitch) until finally disappearing in a mist of quietly plucked notes.  If you think of the mandolin as just strumming along to pop songs, you’ll be blown away by this.  He plays notes that I suspect were never meant to be played…sliding all the way down to the highest high notes on the highest strings.  I don’t know that it sounds better than a violin, but it is pretty neat.

“Bucimis” is a raucous Bulgarian folk tune in the odd meter of 15/16. “It’s almost 4/4, but not quite,” he says. “I can play it, but I can’t dance it.”  This song is absolutely wild, especially at the end.  While the first song was pretty, this song showcases just what you can do with a mandolin.  It’s intense.

I don’t normally write about kids picture books (if I did my whole blog would be about them as we read so many).  But this one gets a special mention because a) it was published by First Second and b) I love Ben Hatke’s drawing style so much.

This is a delightful story which you have to start on the title page.  It shows a giant turtle with a huge house on its back.  And on the next page the text says “Julia’s house came to town.”

Julia puts in a mailbox and settles in by the sea. (more…)

protoPromtomartyr’s Under Color of Official Right has been one of my favorite albums of the last few years.  Joe Casey’s vocals are more or less spoken (and angry) while the music is propulsive and rocking.  Sometimes punk, sometimes something else entirely.  It’s a weird pairing but it worked wonderfully.

I hadn’t heard their new album yet–I am a little afraid that they’re going to mess with the perfection of their second album–but as soon as I saw they did a Tiny Desk Concert I had to check it out.

“Singer” Joe Casey stands at the front.  He wears a suit and sunglasses (evidently he has some stage fright issues) and he barely moves.  And then there’s the rest of the guys–each wearing all black, looking like the backing band for someone else entirely (the bassist has super long blond hair).  And yet, man, do they play great together.

The band plays three songs.  The first two are from their new album.  “Why Does It Shake?” has a cool interesting bass line and sharp, occasional guitar chords along with drums that are mostly played along the rim.  The song unexpectedly slows down for a middle section.  And all along, Casey asks his tough, threatening lyrics.  The song is over 4 and a half minutes, perhaps one of their longest tracks.

The second song, “”Devil In His Youth” is a fast propulsive song with a great catchy riff that leads to the simple spoken chorus of “the devil in his youth.”  This song is much more familiar in terms of Protomartyr songs and is only two and a half minutes long.

The final song comes from their debut album, No Passion All Technique (which is hard to get and which I’ve never heard). The song doesn’t sound drastically different from the others, but you can hear a different tone, perhaps a little less abrasive?

Naturally for a curmudgeonly band, they don’t play anything from the album I love, but this set is really good nonetheless.  And yes, it may be time to investigate the new album.

I saw this book when we were visiting Toronto and I wrote down the title to check it out.  I didn’t know anything about it, and didn’t realize that I knew the work of Jillian Tamaki from several great graphic novels

I also had no idea that this was actually a long in progress webcomic that Tamaki has put into book form.

And finally, I didn’t expect it to be a series of one page funny strips that tell an overarching story. (more…)

stitches SOUNDTRACK: SON LUX-Tiny Desk Concert #464 (August 21 2015).

I really only know about Son Lux from NPR.  And the more I hear from them, the more I like them.

Recently Son Lux has become a trio (it was originally the project of singer/instrumentalist Ryan Lott).  But in this Tiny Desk, rather than staying small, Son Lux went big, adding off-duty, civilian horn players from the United States Marine Band.

I love the opening of “You Don’t Know Me” with the unexpected stops and starts amid the whole section of horns.  And then Lott’s voice comes in, it’s unusual, dramatic and theatrical.  While the horns are more powerful than everything else in this song, as it nears the middle, the guitar line comes in and is groovy and simple.  And then of course there’s the drummer, Ian Chang.  It’s a shame he’s stuck in the back corner because he is incredible.  The rhythms and rolls are tight and furious, but never overwhelming, they are like perfect accents.  And the accessories he uses–simple and effective—all on such at tiny kit. It’s amazing.  All of this goes on for half the song before Lott sits at the piano and plays along.  I love how the song drops out and leaves just the horns to play the end.

For “Now I Want” Chang plays piano.  He plays a simple set of notes moving the song along until he jumps back to drums and Lott takes over on piano (a much more accomplished melody).  There’s great guitar sounds by Rafiq Bhatia (who knew you could get a guitar to do that–he even has a dollar bill under some strings for some of the song) and more amazing drum work.  I love the way the song completely slows down for a gentle piano melody in the middle and the builds back up again.

Lott is a fun and charismatic lead, whether he’s clapping for his band mates, or encouraging people to sing along.

For “Your Day Will Come” some of the horns leave, with only a trio remaining.  Lott opens on piano, with some guitar sounds played over the top.  This song is primarily Lott’s as he sings his heart out (some really loud sections) as the music gently swells.

I’m not sure what attracted me to this book, but as soon as I brought it home Sarah said she knew it.

This is a memoir of the young life of David Small.  His drawing and painting style is very dark, and the people he draws are pretty creepy–which just makes his upbringing seem all the more horrible.

His drawings of himself as a baby are unflattering.  And his mother and father both wear glasses so we never really see their eyes–just white where the glass is (their faces are a little darker, so the white really stands out).

He was born tiny and with bad sinuses and a bad digestive system.  His father was a doctor and did all kinds of technological things to him to try to cure him.  Which at that time consisted primarily of radiation.  His father seemed caring, but he was totally committed to his science and had little time for his family.

This meant that he sent most of his time with his mother.  And she didn’t speak very much.  She communicated by slamming doors.  Unless she was very mad and then the screaming began.
