[DID NOT ATTEND: January 30, 2026] THE TRIP: Canaries, The Tubs, Hotline TNT, Wishy, Horse Jumper of Love

This I was pretty interested in this show because I knew two bands and I really want to see Hotline TNT.  But then this show was the same night as Jordan Klepper, who my wife was dying to see live.  He was great and I didn’t mind missing this long night of music.

I’m not sure what the order of the bands was.

I have never seen Horse Jumper of Love.  When they played previous shows I wrote: They play downbeat, rather depressing mope rock.  With occasional flares of noise attached.  I’d hope they’d be more lively in concert.  But I doubt it somehow.  They keep appearing on my radar though, so maybe I would like them.

I saw Wishy open for Momma.  I really enjoyed their set a lot–the two singers with great harmonies and, as I wrote about Sick Sweet, it’s a shoegazey masterpiece that I feel in love with the first time I heard it.  I would happily have seen them again.

Hotline TNT plays what I can only describe as classic shoegaze, which is definitely having a moment again.  Unlike a lot of their contemporaries, they don’t really mess with the classic shoegaze vibe all that much–not adding elements at all.  Their music warms my heart and I’d love to see them live.  This is the sixth time I’ve missed them since 2022.

Canaries are a noisy shoegazeish band from Richmond Virginia.  They’re not dipping into the heavier side of the genre, instead they are making a lot of crashing noises–a fun rowdy kind of shoegaze that I like.

The Tubs are a Welsh indie rock band from Cardiff, formed in 2018. The band was founded by Owen Williams and original guitarist George Nicholls. Along with Max Warren they were previously members of Joanna Gruesome. The current lineup is completed by Dan Lucas and Taylor Stewart.  I am surprised that one of the bands on this line up is Welsh (and maybe it’s not them), but their jangle pop is not too far off from the rest of the show.

This would have been a fun show to go to and a good chance to check out a bunch of bands.

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 2, 2023] Panchiko / Horse Jumper of Love / LSD and the Search for God

The story of Panchiko is absurd.

The band first received public attention in 2016 when their 2000 demo EP D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L was discovered by a 4chan user in a charity shop in Sherwood, Nottingham and shared online. The EP’s status as lost media led to a dedicated cult following and a community devoted to tracking down its band members. This was unbeknownst to the band until 2020, when Davies was found and contacted by a fan through Facebook.

Panchiko has since released two compilation albums remastering their older music: a reissue of D>E>A>T>H>M>E>T>A>L combining their first two EPs and Ferric Oxide (Demos 1997-2001). In December 2021, the band performed their first show in over twenty years in their hometown of Nottingham, after which they embarked on their first tour in the United States.  In November 2021, they amassed over 10 million streams on Spotify.

I mean, not to mention that the word they are talking about is actually Pachinko.  But whatever.  I listened to the EP back in 2019 or so and liked it.  I considered seeing them when they came around in 2022, but it fell through for some reason.

I didn’t actually hear about this show until a few days ago and it was too late to make plans to go. I haven’t even really listened to the new music to know if I wanted to go, so no big deal.

Back in 2021, when I looked up Horse Jumper of Love, I discovered

They play downbeat, rather depressing mope rock.  With occasional flares of noise attached.  I’d hope they’d be more lively in concert.  But I doubt it somehow.

LSD and the Search for God are pretty interesting.  I listened to a few of their songs and really liked them. And then, just as quickly, I got tired of them.  Drugs, huh?

LSD and the Search for God hit the Northern California coast in 2005–seemingly from another space and time–dosing San Francisco’s underground psychedelic music community with hypnotic live shows built upon swirling guitars, otherworldly drones, fuzzed-out pop hooks, and youthfully flirtatious male/female vocals.

I suspect they’d be very good live.

[POSTPONED: October 1, 2022] Indigo De Souza / Horse Jumper Of Love / Friendship [rescheduled from January 30, and May 2, 2022 moved to May 23, 2023]

Third time was not the charm.  Indigo de Souza has postponed this show twice before because of COVID–valid enough reasons.  But it was pretty strange that she has chosen to postpone this time for very different reasons:

We just received word that Indigo De Souza will begin working on their new record in the coming weeks. So the previously re-scheduled show for October 1st will now take place at our venue on May 23, 2023.

That’s a little weird.  At least they sent this message on August 12, so there was plenty of time to be made aware of the change.

So, the fourth time will be almost a year later from the second time.

~~~~~
Indigo De Souza had to postpone her previous show here because of general COVID anxiety.  Now, just a few days before this show was supposed to happen, she had to postponed because of an actual COVID outbreak:
Thank you for purchasing tickets to see Indigo De Souza at Union Transfer on May 2. Unfortunately, due to a postive Covid test in the touring party, this show has been postponed to a date to be determined in the future.
From the band: “Unfortunately, our bass player and Horse Jumper of Love’s drummer have tested positive for covid so we have decided to postpone Monday’s show in Philadelphia ,PA :/ Please hold on to your tickets as we will be announcing new dates asap. We are sad to miss this show. It’s a sensitive time to be playing music. Thank you for bearing with us as we learn how to navigate it all. Sending love in all directions.
Perhaps third time’s the charm
Indigo De Souza is a new (to me) musician who I heard about on NPR music.  Her song “Kill Me” is outstanding.  A great dynamic of sounds, very funny lyrics and memorable hooks.  I loved it immediately.  She announced a tour soon after I’d heard it and I grabbed a ticket to see her headline tour (!).
She’s ben making music since she was like 9 with a few EPs and a previous album.  I imagine she’ll be a fun and wild performer.
On January 13, Union Transfer announced:
Indigo has decided it’s best for all involved to move their tour to a few weeks later in the year. The Philly show will now take place at Union Transfer on May 2nd
That’s not too far off.
I hadn’t heard of either of the opening acts (such is the case when the headliner is fairy new herself).  (more…)
