indexI missed out on the origins of Coheed and Cambria.  I have one of their albums and I quite like it.  I’ve always wanted to listen to more of them (progressive metal!), but I always feel like I need to devote a lot more time than I have to complicated music.

They tour quite a bit and I thought it would be fun to see them live even if I don’t know their music all that well.

The confusing name of this tour is Neverender: NWFT.  Claudio Sanchez says “Neverender is a special chance for us to celebrate the milestones that have made us Coheed and Cambria,”  NWFT means that they are playing all of their 2007 album Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow. 

The album I have is Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness (2006).

Now with the show pushed back a year, it gives me time to explore that album a bit and maybe go see them.

At some point about five years ago I seemed to be seeing ads for Chon everywhere I went.  I hadn’t heard of them before, but when I looked them up they sounded really interesting.  They play a progressive/math rock and I love it.  I have wanted to see them live now for about a year, so this seemed like a great double bill.

I would also happily see them headline.  One of these days!

[POSTPONED: September 12, 2020] Pet Shop Boys / New Order: The Unity Tour [moved September 22, 2021]

indexI saw the Pet Shop Boys in Morristown a few years ago.  The show was great.  The guys sounded amazing and I had a really good time–except for the crowd around me.  They were all loud and talking and tall and pushing.  I wished I’d gotten better seats as well.  So I told myself if they toured again I would see them if conditions were good.

Well, how about if they toured with New Order?  I’ve been a fan of New Order forever but I’ve never seen them live.  I’m not even sure I ever really wanted to see them live.  But putting them together with New Order was  perfect.  I didn’t realize that peter Hook had left the band.  I did see that he was doing solo shows, but I didn’t realize he had no main band anymore.  I also didn’t realized they’d put out any new music since Get Ready.  Well, I hope they were just going to play the hits.

I didn’t really want to go to Madison Square Garden, but I’ve had good luck there lately so I picked it over any other large venue.

On June 11, I got the news that Pet Shop Boys & New Order – The Unity Tour was to be postponed until next year.  I had pretty good seats, so I’m glad I get to keep them.  I’ve waited a while to see them again, what’s one more year?

[POSTPONED: September 9, 2020] Ratboys / Another Michael [rescheduled from May 8; moved to March 24, 2021]

indexThis date seemed to have been scheduled and then immediately moved with little fanfare.  There is evidence online that this show was planned.  But it has quietly  been moved to March of next year.

I really like the new Ratboys record Printer’s Devil. It’s got a lot more rocking sound than their earlier albums.

The guitars are more distorted.  The drums are louder and Julia Steiner’s voice seems a bit bigger.  But they still have a pop sensibility.  They seem liked they’d be fun live.

I could have seen Another Michael open for Pinegrove at House of Independents.  I picked a different night with a different opening band.  They play a kind of mellow indie rock with lead Michael’s vocals veering into R&B styles.  They don’t exactly seem to go together, but maybe it would work.

[POSTPONED: September 8, 2020] They Might Be Giants [rescheduled from March 13; moved to April 15, 2021]

indexThis was one of the first shows that was postponed because of the coronavirus.  The new date was scheduled very quickly and, as it turns out, too soon.

Now, like most shows, it is being pushed back about a year from its original date.  Boy I hope it holds out.

I am still very much looking forward to it.  Don’t give up on us yet, Johns!

March was going to be a very busy concert month for me.  This was to be the first of four shows in five nights.  This show was going to be for me and S.–a night of They Might Be Giants performing Flood!

It turned out to be the first of dozens of shows cancelled or postponed by the coronavirus.

Obviously, my main concern is for everyone’s safety, including the bands!

My selfish concern though is that once the shows are rescheduled that all of these shows will be scheduled on the same day!

Let’s hope the rescheduled dates also do some social distancing.

indexI was very much looking forward to this show.  When it was postponed to September, I figured that was okay.

But then on June 8 the show was officially cancelled. That’s a bummer.  I hope it just means he’s cancelling it so people get their money back and he will try again next year.

I saw Kurt Vile at White Eagle Hall two years ago and his show was really great–more complex and interesting than I thought it would be (I imagined a lengthy chill out jam, which it was, but it was much more).

S and I also saw him tour with Courtney Barnett which was a totally cool show.

S. has been enjoying Kurt a lot this past year so I decided to get us both tickets to this reasonably close show.

I was actually quite excited that Cate le Bon was opening or playing with him or however that was going to work.  I have wanted to see the quirky Welsh singer for some time.  I was supposed to see her last summer but my plans changed and I couldn’t go.  I assumed that Cate would play first and then Kurt and they’d probably play some together.

Stella Mozgawa is the drummer for the band Warpaint.  She has also played drums for Kurt Vile and Cate Le Bon’s last couple of albums.

I’m not sure what she was going to do, but I sure how she is going to play with them in September.

UPDATE: On June 8, the show was formally cancelled.

indexI really don’t know anything about Marshmello except that he wears a giant marshmellow thing over his head and that he’s a DJ.

I only happened to notice he was playing at The Met when I was looking up another show. I only really know about him because my daughter mentioned him.  When I told her about this show, she said she only knows of him because he was a guest on someone else’s song.  So, he sings?  He’s not just a dance music maker?  What could his live show possibly be like?

The odds of me going to this show were pretty much nil, but the more I learn about him without actually looking anything official up, the more fascinated I am by him.

Do I dare watch a video of him live?

[POSTPONED: August 27, 2020] Hella Mega Tour: Green Day / Fall Out Boy / Weezer / The Interrupters [moved to August 20, 2021]

indexWhen this tour was announced I knew that I’d have to get tickets for the whole family to go to.  We haven;t all been to a big spectacle show and I thought this sounded like a great one.

My son likes Green Day.  My daughter likes Fall Out Boy.  We all like Weezer.  No brainer.

Neither of them have been to a big stadium show before.  I don’t love a stadium show really, but getting decent tickets would make it more fun to be sure.

The tickets were pricey, yes, but I managed to get pretty good seats (on the ground but near the back of those seats) and I thought it would be a great way to end the summer (even if I have no idea what Citizens Bank Park is like it was better than trying to get to CitiField in New York).

I was bummed that this tour was postponed since it was at the end of the summer and seemed so far away.  But they need to postpone a tour like this early and it was decided on May 19, so there was no waiting until the last minute.

There’s not much to say about any of these bands.  They’re all huge.  Musical purists don’t like any of them, but they write catchy songs and all of the songs are fun.

I have only seen Weezer, and if they put on the kind of show that they have been playing, that alone would be a great night.  But I’m pretty sure all three bands were going to pull out all the stops.  I think we were in for an exhausting night ( I assume with traffic we wouldn’t be home until like 2AM).

The Interrupters are a ska band with whose lead singer Aimee Interrupter sounds a bit like Brody Dalle from The Distillers. The rest of the band is three brothers: Jesse Bivona on drums, Justin Bivona on bass, and Kevin Bivona on guitar.  I’m still a fan of ska so I’m glad to see its (apparent) resurgence.  I hope it’s still of interest next year since i;d love to hear a new ska band.

I’m glad the show is being rescheduled.  The kids will all be one year older, which makes it even more fun for us all.

[POSTPONED: August 27, 2020] Hall & Oates / Squeeze / KT Tunstall [moved to August 13, 2021]

indexI was not planning on going to this show at all. I have a funny history about Hall & Oates.  I really liked them when I was little (Private Eyes era), then when I found out a cousin of mine looooved them, and I didn’t like her, well, that changed my mind about them for years.

In the last dew years I’ve found out that they are not only good, but quite respected (especially in the Philly area).  I still don’t want to see them, but when I looked at the setlists of recent shows, I realized I’d know nearly all of their songs and would probably have a fun time with all the other old folks.

I saw Squeeze a couple years ago and they were fantastic live.  Their old songs sounded amazing and their new ones fit in perfectly.  I would absolutely see them again.  But I’d rather they were headlining.

KT Tunstall is actually the impetus for me writing this post.  I noticed that she was playing a lot of shows in the area and I was surprised because I didn’t know she was still active.  It was kind of a joke that I wanted to post every show she was going to play around here, whether I planned to go or not.  But when I listened to a live show of hers I realized she;d be a lot of fun to see live.

Maybe this would be a fun show to see after all.  We’ll see what 2021 brings.

indexThis show was postponed from April 24.  I didn’t know all that much about Joywave then but figured I’d listen to them more and see if I wanted to go see them.  When the show was postponed I thought it would give me more time to check them out.

I did and I found them to be okay.  But I probably wouldn’t have gone to see them anyway (I’d rather have gone to The Beths).

[POSTPONED: August 27, 2020] The Beths / Weakened Friends [rescheduled from April 29 Kung Fu Necktie]

indexThis show was moved from Kung Fu Necktie (a venue I’ve never been to and would like to check out) to World Cafe Live–I’m very curious how these two venues are connected.

The Beths are from New Zealand.  New Zealand has a pretty great track record for producing great bands.

The Beths play a delightful alt-pop rock with a splash of grunge and punk all under Elizabeth Stokes’ high but powerful voice.

I’m not too familiar with their music, but I was planning to be by the time of this show.

The opening band Weakened Friends describes themselves as “We’re three tall young adults making some songs and eating some snacks. Indie noise junk band from Portland ME and Boston MA.”

I listened to a few songs and they have a great distorted guitar/catchy chorus sound.  J. Mascis even guests on one of their songs.  I think they’d be great live.

Hope they can make it back to the States next year.
