[ATTENDED: September 6, 2025] The Get Up Kids 

I have tried to se The Get Up Kids at least three times in the last few years.  They had been doing this tour for Something to Write Home About for a couple of years, including Union Transfer in Sept 2024 an Starland Ballroom in February of this year.

I was interested in this show for Wax Jaw, but heck, it was also a chance to finally see The Get Up Kids.  Midway through the set, lead guitarist and sometimes singer Jim Suptic said that they ha just played LA the night before and had a red-eye flight at 4:30 to go to Japan.  But they wanted to make sure they gave New Jersey a good show.  He said they loved playing NJ and that so far on this tour NJ has sung along the loudest.

I really had no idea what the band looked like and had no idea who had that totally recognizable singing voice.  So it was kind of a surprise to see Matt Pryor with a full beard.   Earlier Piebald had joked that The Get Up Kids weren’t kids anymore.

Bassist Rob Pope doesn’t sing, but he does come up front to the edge of the stage from time to time.  And drummer Ryan Pope was excellent.  Keyboardist Dustin Kinsey wasn’t on every song but I appreciated his contributions. (more…)

[ATTENDED: September 6, 2025] Piebald

When this show was announced I was excited about Wax Jaw and The Get Up Kids, but I didn’t know anything about Piebald.  It’s a little puzzling that I didn’t know them because they’re from the mid 90s Boston music scene.

The lineup said they were going to go on at 6, but their setup seemed to take a while and they didn’t go on until 6:30.  This was good for the break between them and Get Up Kids, but it meant that Wax Jaw was about an hour between bands.  But Piebald seemed in very good spirits.

I was unfamiliar with them.  And I guess I was the only one because wow, there were a group of guys up front who knew every word and who were dancing around.  Indeed the crowd was really into their set.  And so was I.  One guy was really really into it, almost embarrassingly so, but they admitted that he used to play cowbell for them so he was practically part of the band.

I enjoyed their sound right from the start–I loved that there were lots of YEAHS and HEYS sung very loudly by all three singers (Aaron Stuart, guitar and Andrew Bonner, bass).

And the content of the lyrics was really good too. (more…)

[ATTENDED: September 6, 2025] Wax Jaw 

There are lots of young bands that I’m excited to watch get bigger.  Wax Jaw has been a favorite of mine for awhile, but I’ve only seen them twice.

I found out about this Bolero Block Party through their social media account, even though they weren’t originally  supposed to open (according to the Tshirt I bought), but they’re the reason I went to the show (the fact that The Get Up Kids wee headlining was a major plus!)

When I saw the last night, it was at a tiny club for the release of their debut EP.  The crowd was all there for them and they were wild.

For this show, they went on at 5:00.  But, the entire afternoon it had been raining massively.  It even said it was supposed to rain for the entire day.  I assumed the show would be washed out–I certainly wasn’t going to go stand for 4 hours in the rain.

I felt bad for the brewery because this was their first time doing this and they had a lot of things in place–vendors, food trucks and even a skateboard ramp (see map below.)  Sadly the skateboard ramp went unused) it had gotten too wet, but the vendors were cool and the food was great.

And then, miraculously, it stopped raining at 3:15, which gave me just enough time to get ready and head over to Carlstadt.  Luckily there was nothing going on at Met Life Stadium, because the brewery is right around the corner and game or concert traffic would have killed me.

But I arrived early, and was delighted to walk around and look at the vendors.  I bought some shirts from Jetty and had delicious BBQ from Rhythm and Ribz. (more…)

Yet again, Wax Jaw eludes me.

This show sounds amazing–a rocking show with an opportunity to watch the band make a video.  How cool would that be?

The blurb says

And, yea, I don’t want to be in a Wax Jaw video.  And they don’t want me in a Wax Jaw video.

Wax Jaw continues to play really close to me but always on nights that I’m already busy.

This show was announced fairly recently but I already had tickets to see Guster AND there was a second show I really wanted to see this night, Porridge Radio.  So this show was never going to happen for me.

Teen Idle is the musical moniker of NJ-based songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Sara Abdelbarry.  Meshing the heartfelt nature of influences like Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham with the grittiness and abrasiveness of grunge and the lovelorn tendency of ’60s acts like The Ronettes, Teen Idle makes emotional rock music with a statement (and a cinematic tendency).

I had never heard of Teen Idle, and a quick listen reminds me a bit of The Weather Station (Sara has a great voice too).  But this vibe doesn’t really fit with Wax Jaw to me. (more…)

Wax Jaw continues to play really close to me but always on nights that I’m already busy.

This show sounded like a ton of fun, but it was the same night that I was going to see Kathleen Edwards.  So, no dice yet again.

I see that Wax Jaw sets are still under an hour.  And  there’s nothing wrong with that, but it will effect ones decision where to go that night.

Friend is a raucous punk band from Philly.  In the video below for one of the songs they seem to be wearing goblin head masks.  They are all over the place with their sound, but its mostly loud and fast.  (They played a punk version of Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time–see below) (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: April 28, 2024] Wine Lips / Bad Nerves / Wax Jaw

I was really interested in this show mostly because of Wax Jaw (I continue to want to see them and to get foiled in doing so).  But also because of Wine Lips who played with Wine Lips a year ago.

I had written it on my calendar as happening on Sunday the 28th.  Which I couldn’t make.  imagine my surprise that it was actually Monday but I had missed it anyway.

Wine Lips are a trio of Cam Hilborn on Guitar and Vocals with Aurora Evans on Drums and Charlie Weare on Bass.

Their music seemed to fit well with Acid Dad as this review says:

“Fuzzy, loud and fast, Wine Lips are a garage/ punk/ psychedelic band whose music feels like a shot of adrenaline to the heart. A no holds barred kind of rock n roll that’ll make you want to buy a motorcycle, just to crash it.” – Sled Island

Bad Nerves are from England.  How’d they get on this seemingly local tour, I wonder.

The Aquarian says this about them

UK’s Bad Nerves want to shake things up – and shake things up they will. Actually, it is already what they are doing in this dull, formulaic, and predictive music scene. The punk rock outfit are bringing back the ethos we all miss: the CBGB’s underground rock spirit, the Ramones-era nostalgic punk scene we crave, and the edgy garage band we want. Their songs are reminiscent of the 1970s and singer Bobby Nerves’ shrill, piercing vocals complement Will Power, Jon Poulton, Sam Thompson, and George Berry immaculately. 

I listened to a bit of the show below and found it to be kind of dull and formulaic.  So, whatever.

And then there’s Wax Jaw, undeniably the band I would like to see who I keep missing more than another band, even though they play near me ALL THE TIME.

I keep getting shut out of seeing Wax Jaw.  It’s insane how many concerts they sprinkle around for me to see which I somehow manage not to get to.

When I saw they were playing Bethlehem, I was super psyched to go!   Sure, I’ve never been to The Funhouse, but so what.

I wrote on the calendar that this show was Saturday night.  Only to realize on Friday that it was on Friday!  And we had already made plans.  Sigh.

This one was weird because there were no tickets available ahead of the show, it was only at the door.  I had no intention of getting here early or anything s oi guess it’s possible I could have been shut out (capacity 100) and that would have just pissed me off. (more…)

Thursday nights at Love City Brewing (which I had never heard of before–it opened in 2018) are Free Music Nights.

Wax Jaw, whom I have now failed to see six times, announced this special show as part of their short tour (after the tour dates had been set).  I grabbed a free ticket from DICE and was all set to go.  I was even going to blow off my Wednesday night show so that I’d only have one show during the week.  I thought my wife and daughter were doing something but when I found out they weren’t I decided to stay home and try out Senor Tacos in Bradley Gardens (which was delicious).

So again, no Wax Jaw for me (I have seen them once, at least).  But it’s getting silly how many times I haven’t seen them now. (more…)

I have recently discovered the Philly band Wax Jaw and I am mildly obsessed with them.  They recently posted that they have existed for one whole year.  In that time I could have seen them six times, but only saw them once.  And I am looking forward to seeing them again.

The confusing thing about this show is that I have seen two posters for it.  The one on the right implies that Porcelain arethe headliners.  The one below implies  that Wax jaw are the headliners.  What to believe?

I already had plans for this night and I didn’t want to give them up for a 20 minute Wax Jaw set.  Although it does sound like Wax Jaw is headlining.

Well, I already had plans.  Plus, Wax Jaw is playing in Bethlehem in a few weeks anyhow.

Porcelain is from Austin.  Post-Trash says

The quartet of Ryan Fitzgibbon (US Weekly), Eli Deitz (Dregs, Votive), Steve Pike (Exhalants, CSSS), and Jordan Emmert (Super Thief, Pleasure Venom) bring a great deal of experience together from different pockets of the city’s noise rock and punk scene, the pieces coming together to create something better than the sum of it’s parts.

I’ve never heard of any of those bands.  I like the sound of their music but I don’t really like the singer.  I bet they crush it live though, their drummer sounds like a maniac.

Life in Vacuum is from Toronto. Although Stereogum adds more details

Life In Vacuum are a band based in Toronto, formed in Ukraine, playing an aggressive form of indie rock that pulls from a few different subgenres. I hear some Fugazi-style post-hardcore and some Metz-esque noise-rock in the mix.

They play an abrasive thumping hardcore that’s lurching and unsettling. Probably amazing to see live.

Born Loser is a record label that Life in Vacuum is on.  I gather someone from the label will be spinning songs from the label between bands?
