[DID NOT ATTEND: January 4, 2025] Stinking Lizaveta / Darsombra / Eye Flys

For reasons I don’t entirely remember, I’ve added Stinking Lizaveta to the list of bands that I’d like to see.

I think what inspired me to check them out is that they are an instrumental band who play complex music.

And this is the third or fourth time that I am not seeing them.  The main reason for this is because I rather enjoyed not going to shows for a while.  And I didn’t want my first show of the year to be a band that I didn’t really know all that much about.

But I would like to see them some day.

[DID NOT ATTEND: March 16, 2024] Sleepytime Gorilla Museum / Stinking Lizaveta / Zoë Keating

Underground Arts had a special year-end sale.  12 future shows for $18 each.  It’s a good deal if you plan to go to a lot of shows there.   And I find myself wanting to go to more and more shows there.

Well, my cost per show went up a bit because I wound up not going to this show.  My son was home from college, and that more important that checking out this strange band, although I would still like to see them sometime.

I actually only even paid any attention to this show because Stinking Lizaveta was opening for them.  They are a local Philly band that I have yet to see, but who I have missed now about six times.

This lineup was pretty fascinating.

Zoë Keating opened the show.  I have discovered that she recently played at ArtYard in Frenchtown and I’m going to want to check her out live.  Here’s her bio

I am a cellist and composer, born in Canada and currently based in Vermont. I use live sampling and repetition to layer the sound of my cello and create rhythmically dense, immersive music. I’m known for both my use of technology – which I use to sample my cello onstage – and for my DIY approach, releasing my music without the help of a record label. In addition to performing, I also write music for TV, film and dance.

[DID NOT ATTEND: August 31, 2023] Dysrhythmia / Stinking Lizaveta / Countdown from Ten

For reasons I don’t entirely remember, I’ve added Stinking Lizaveta to the list of bands that I’d like to see.

I think what inspired me to check them out is that they are an instrumental band who play complex music.  Indeed, it appears that not a word would be sung this entire evening.

After reading about and then listening to all of these bands, I decided that I would go to this show after all.  So I grabbed a ticket.  And then it turned out that there were so many  things going o this weekend that spending Thursday night jamming to metal math rock just didn’t fit into the plans

Bummer. (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: April 28, 2022] Stinking Lizaveta / Microwaves / Faking

April 28th turned out to be a banner night of shows.  There were four I was interested in seeing–three of those I was really interested in.  It was very hard to choose especially since one of them was a show rescheduled to that night and I already had tickets to a different one.

Of the four shows this night, this was the lowest.  I would like to see Stinking Lizaveta, but I’d much rather see the others.

Microwaves is a noisy band from Pittsburgh

Faking is a noise rock band from Philly.  I assume I’ll be seeing both of them on bills going forward.
