[DID NOT ATTEND: August 23, 2024] Pollyanna / Latewaves / Froggy

I was supposed to see Pollyanna open for Jhariah back in January.  They had to bail because they were touring with someone else.  I was also suppose to see them at the Ukie Club, but it didn’t happen.

So I was excited to see them at this show which was listed as being at Asbury Lanes ut actually took place on the Baronet Rooftop at the Asbury Hotel.  I have no idea if that’s a thing that happens much.  I don’t know if it ‘s a bigger, better venue or just a change of venue.

I was looking forward to experiencing this whole night.  And then we booked our vacation for that week.  So, no Pollyanna yet again.

Latewaves is a rock band from Asbury Park, NJ that is trying their best.  They do rock although in a more poppy than punky way.  They seem like they’d be fun live.

Froggy is a Philadelphia based queer punk band. The members are all quite young.  Actually that was true when I first posted about them two years ago.  I don’t know how old they are now, but I’m glad they’re still going.

Musically they are pretty tight and their musical sense is all over the place with punk noise (love it!).  Their first single 7-11 Nachos has an early Black Flag (TV Party) vibe.  But I’m not a fan of the singer’s voice.

I saw Jhariah earlier this year open for Pinkshift.  I loved his set so much.  Everything about it was great.  I thought my daughter would love to see him as well, so when they announced a show at Milkboy, I grabbed tickets for both of us (after discovering that she was allowed to be in the over 21 club as long as she stayed with me the whole time).  Then it turned out that she was invited to a birthday party and she chose to go to that instead.  Which, fair enough.

I already had a ticket for Swans for this evening, which I figured I’d blow off to go out with my daughter.  When she opted for her party, I figured I’d go to the Jhariah show–I was more interested in it that she was.  I really enjoyed his set a few months ago and would have loved to see him again, especially headlining.

Milkboy is a great venue but it is a massive pain in the butt to get to.  I also started to think about how young the crowd would be for this show.  Since I had just had surgery, the last thing I needed was to be in a crowd with people slam dancing and shoving.

So I decided to go to the Swans show as I had originally planned–the music would be louder, but much slower.

Pollyanna was supposed to open for Pinkshift along with Jhariah.  But for whatever reason they did not play that show.  But I really grew to like them a lot.  So when they were announced as a last minute third band at this show I was super excited to finally get to see them live.

Save Face is a Jersey-based band who were signed to Epitaph but are now independent (which is pretty fascinating).  I’d never heard of them, but apparently they did a song with Jhariah in September (which is really good), so that certainly explains the touring together business.   They come from the screamo/post hardcore scene, although to me they sound a ton like My Chemical Romance.  Their last Epitaph album features a guest vocal from Thursday’s Geoff Rickly.

Pinkshift / Jhariah / Pollyanna (Ukie Club, Philadelphia, PA, October 14, 2023) [DID NOT ATTEND]

[DID NOT ATTEND: October 14, 2023] Pinkshift / Jhariah / Pollyanna 

I wanted to go to this show more than the one at House of Independents because I love the Ukie Club.  But I already had tickets to Algernon Cadwallader for this night.  The fact that my son was home from college and I didn’t go to anything this night is totally fine.   And now I’ve found out that the HOI show was rescheduled, so all is good.

I have seen Pinkshift three times and they are amazing.  They get better with each show, but I have yet to see them headline.  So I would have really liked to get to this show.

Jhariah plays musical theater.  But on the heavy end, like when My Chemical Romance goes theatrical.  He throws in all kinds of cool and interesting sounds.  This is wacky and fun and he clearly relishes the theatricality.  I would love to see him live.

Pollyanna are from New Jersey and they absolutely rock: Lead singer and guitarist Jill Beckett, drummer Daniel McCool, bassist Brandon Bolton, and guitarist Jack Rose.  They mix

power-pop, loud rock, bubble grunge, and punk influences.  Their name directly derives from the dictionary definition, “to be unreasonably or illogically optimistic” – perfectly describing front-person Jill Beckett’s ‘stuck in 2017’ incredibly optimistic attitude. After meeting in the first grade, Dan and Jill started the band at just 13 years old, eager to create and play music that would reach audiences beyond the confines of Jill’s open garage doors. Brandon made them a trio in early 2019, bringing 90’s femme punk influence to the group. At the start of 2021, Jack completed the bands’ lineup, adding his elemental stabby guitars and love for shoegaze and metal into the mix. After completing almost 5 tours around the east coast and the midwest, Pollyanna has won over a following in the New Jersey music scene along with cities in the tri-state and beyond. They plan on growing as far as possible and leaving a unique mark in the music industry.

Their album Slime is great–snotty and brash with great sounds and Beckett’s excellent vocals.  So, yes, I hope to see them some time.

Sorry about the flooding (it was really terrible), but I’m glad I get to see the show next year.

[POSTPONED: October 12, 2023] Pinkshift / Jhariah / Pollyanna [moved to January 26, 2024, to Asbury Lanes]

I found out about this show too late.  By the time I realized it was happening I already had plans.  But as it happens, this show was postponed because of flooding.  It’s been rescheduled to January 26, which is pretty great for me, because this show looks amazing.
