[DID NOT ATTEND: September 21, 2025] Tom Odell / Jade Bird

I had never heard of Tom Odell. The only reason this show was on my radar is because Jade Bird was opening.  How could Jade Bird, who gets massive airplay and love in Philly be opening for someone I’ve never heard of?

Of course, I heard  the name Tom Odell and though of Tom Bodett who is not the same in any way, but it still made me laugh.

Evidently he is very highly regarded and has been around since 2012. Just off my radar I guess.  But his whole tour was ultimately cancelled:

“Due to an unforeseen change in my schedule and the associated logistics, sadly we need to reschedule the upcoming May dates in the US. This has also affected some of the September US shows.

I assume this is why Jade Bird scheduled some headline shows in the area, since her tour was cancelled.

[DID NOT ATTEND: September 16, 2026] Jade Bird / The Carlile Family Band

I’ve like Jade Bird for a while–never enough to get really into her, although the last few years I’ve been enjoying her more and more.  She has an incredible voice and live, she is really quirky and silly.  We heard her sing while at the Newport Folk Festival (we were going to another show while she was on).  And I got to see her do a Free at Noon.  But she was a little under the weather and didn’t play the song where she really belts out the vocals.

I would very much like to see her do a full set (and Wonder Bar is so small she might not have even needed a microphone), but this was the same night as Garbage, so Jade Bird will have to wait.

The Carlile Family Band is a family band from a tiny, rural Washington town called Curlew. We perform a mix of Folk, Americana, and Indie sounds across nine instruments from box drums to banjos. We thrive on bending genre and having fun while doing it.   We also write, record and produce our own music, often from the backseat of a our motorhome while we’re on the road.  With shows filled with comedy and family harmonies, we invite you to come along! There’s always a new song or story we are just waiting to share.

They sound like a hoot and seem perfectly matched for Jade Bird’s quirkiness.

[ATTENDED: October 15, 2021] Jade Bird

I’ve really enjoyed the rocking songs that Jade Bird releases.  Her voice is so powerful and big that I rally wanted to see her live.  Well, we did kind of see her live at Newport Folk Festival, but that was more hearing her as we were walking around.  So when she announced a tour I definitely wanted to see her.

But it turned out that her show at Underground Arts was Thursday the 14th and I’d already had three shows in a row that week.  (One did get cancelled, but I didn’t change my plans).  So I wouldn’t get to see her.  Until WXPN announced that she’d be playing a Free at Noon (one of the few they did this year).

A Free at Noon show is weird for me.  I have to leave at least 90 minutes before the show for travel time and parking and then it takes me an hour at least to get back to work. So that’s two and a half hours, not including the show which is usually an hour.  So, if traffic is bad, it could be a four hour Free at Noon for me.  But if you have extra vacation time, why not use it?

So I drove down to Philly and got a great spot on the street.  I actually wound up being very early because of the lack of traffic.  And that was fine.  I got a spot right by the stage and waited for Jade Bird to come out. (more…)

[ATTENDED: July 27 & 28, 2019] Newport Folk Festival

Back in 1998, I won a radio contest (not through luck, I knew the name of a song and couldn’t believe no one else did!) and scored a ticket to the Newport Folk Festival.  It was in a lull back then and also, I believe there was only one stage (it’s hard to remember).  Now it is at full power, selling out before artists are even announced.

S. and I have talked about going and finally this year I saw when tickets were announced and I bought 4 tickets for us.  I knew that our son wouldn’t want to go, but I decided to make a long vacation out of it–a couple days in Rhode Island and then about a week in Maine.  He couldn’t say no to going to that.

I didn’t get Friday tickets because three days seemed excessive.  Plus, you never know who is going to appear until long after you buy the tickets. and that actually worked out pretty well.   Turned out, there wasn’t anyone I really wanted to see.

So we rolled in for Saturday.  I was told that if you wanted to get the poster you had to get their very early.  We arrived at 12:30 and they were long sold out.  Oh well. (more…)
