[DID NOT ATTEND: January 30, 2026] THE TRIP: Canaries, The Tubs, Hotline TNT, Wishy, Horse Jumper of Love

This I was pretty interested in this show because I knew two bands and I really want to see Hotline TNT.  But then this show was the same night as Jordan Klepper, who my wife was dying to see live.  He was great and I didn’t mind missing this long night of music.

I’m not sure what the order of the bands was.

I have never seen Horse Jumper of Love.  When they played previous shows I wrote: They play downbeat, rather depressing mope rock.  With occasional flares of noise attached.  I’d hope they’d be more lively in concert.  But I doubt it somehow.  They keep appearing on my radar though, so maybe I would like them.

I saw Wishy open for Momma.  I really enjoyed their set a lot–the two singers with great harmonies and, as I wrote about Sick Sweet, it’s a shoegazey masterpiece that I feel in love with the first time I heard it.  I would happily have seen them again.

Hotline TNT plays what I can only describe as classic shoegaze, which is definitely having a moment again.  Unlike a lot of their contemporaries, they don’t really mess with the classic shoegaze vibe all that much–not adding elements at all.  Their music warms my heart and I’d love to see them live.  This is the sixth time I’ve missed them since 2022.

Canaries are a noisy shoegazeish band from Richmond Virginia.  They’re not dipping into the heavier side of the genre, instead they are making a lot of crashing noises–a fun rowdy kind of shoegaze that I like.

The Tubs are a Welsh indie rock band from Cardiff, formed in 2018. The band was founded by Owen Williams and original guitarist George Nicholls. Along with Max Warren they were previously members of Joanna Gruesome. The current lineup is completed by Dan Lucas and Taylor Stewart.  I am surprised that one of the bands on this line up is Welsh (and maybe it’s not them), but their jangle pop is not too far off from the rest of the show.

This would have been a fun show to go to and a good chance to check out a bunch of bands.

[DID NOT ATTEND: October 12, 2025] Hotline TNT /Dusk

Hotline TNT have played Philly a few times in the last year.  I was a little bit obsessed with them since I missed them back in January 2024 (and then fell in love with their record).  When they played a show in June that I missed, I wrote

I would have loved to go to this show–reviews say they killed it. But it was the night after two long standing nights with My Morning Jacket, and that was just too much.

I can’t figure out who Dusk is.  There’s a number of bands called Dusk.  The most likely one here seems to be the band from Wisconsin, although they are kind of country, which doesn’t quite fit.  There’s an industrial black metal band called Dusk, but I assume it’s not them.  And there’s a band from Austria called Dusk.  It’s as confusing as the fact that I couldn’t find a poster for this mini tour or this show and the only thing I could find was this ad for LPR.

[DID NOT ATTEND: September 28, 2024] Hotline TNT / Disq / Euphoria Again / Patter

I’ve been a little bit obsessed with Hotline TNT since I missed them back in January (and then fell in love with their record).

But it’s hard to imagine going to a four-band show when the headlining band is one you only know a little and has one album that you’ve listened to.

And, of course, I wasn’t going to go to the Church anyhow.

The rest of the lineup?  Never heard of them. (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 8, 2024] TAGABOW / Hotline TNT / Fib / Menu

This was my third missed show at the Ukie Club in a month.  Each one is a show I really wanted to go to.  Although as it turns out, this one was probably the least most interesting one of the three.  I was mostly interested in seeing Hotline TNT who I’ve really been enjoying over the last few months.

TAGABOW I hadn’t heard of until the Slide Away Festival in Aptil–their set was really good (having seen the video).

The other two bands I hadn’t heard of at all.  They are new(ish) indie bands from Philly.

The night’s tickets went to Palestinian Relief, so I didn’t mind getting a ticket since the money went to a good cause.

On the night of I just decided I didn’t really want to go to a full night of bands, even if I would have liked it.  And, watching the videos below, I think I would have.

TAGABOW (They Are Gutting a Body of Water) is a Philly-based shoegaze band that I’ve never heard of.  They seem to be on the noisier side of shoegaze–heavier guitars, more wild distortion, extra noises.   Wikipedia says that genres besides shoegaze that have influenced the band include drum and bass, breakcore, jungle, and reggaeton, which could certainly explain some of the noisier components.

Fib Philadelphia rock band. Logan, charlie, gage, and Damien.  They play noisy, somewhat abrasive rock, with vocals!

I didn’t know Menu at all(they are rather hard to search for online as well).  I enjoyed their set (from the video below) which is the kind of lurching, somewhat off-kilter indie rock that makes me happy.  The first four songs are instrumental, but the fifth does have a few screamed words.

Rampaging post punk from Philadelphia, PA.  Fast guitars like shooting laser blasters. Tracked at home.  This most memorable Rock Band burns bright, quickly leaving you to wonder where it’s gone. We love T.V., just like we’re supposed to

And here’s videos of all four sets from Wallace, Watches!

[DID NOT ATTEND: January 17, 2023] Wednesday / Hotline TNT / Echotracer

Back in June, Wednesday headlined Union Transfer.  I wrote:

Wednesday were supposed to open for Beach Bunny at The Fillmore last year.  They bailed on the show and I was a little bummed because I had heard good things about them.  When they announced this headlining tour (at Union Transfer?  They’re big enough for there already?) I was intrigued.  I’d heard a song or two that I liked, but there was something that held me back.

I really like the fuzzy guitars and largely grunge sound, but there’s a kind of alt-country vibe that underpins their sound that I just can’t get past.  They have a lap steel guitar (which I either love or hate depending on how it’s used) and are often described as merging shoegaze and country.  So I didn’t feel compelled to go to this show after all.  And it was nice to have a Saturday night at home.

They have only gotten more popular in the last six months and I was interested in going this time.  However, it was on the night of a very special date for me–so I had other plans.

Echotracer is a couple of DJs or something.  They are members of a couple of Philly bands who make a kind of noisy dance collage.  I listened to a few minutes and didn’t like them.
