[ATTENDED: October 4, 2026] The Linda Lindas 

Four years ago i got tickets to see The Linda Lindas with my daughter. The show was postponed for a week and she was unable to go  the following week.  So I went by myself and really enjoyed it.  I figured I’d either see them before they broke huge or before the broke up.  Well, I don’t know if they broke huge, but they have played some pretty big shows (they opened for Green Day after all).

The foursome are great musicians, they write rocking punk songs, and most important, they have a ton of fun.  When I saw them last time, drummer Mila de la Garza, was possibly 12 (she is 16 now).  The oldest member, Bela Salazar turned 21 last year.  Guitarist Lucia de la Garza is now 18 and bassist Eloise Wong is now 19.

In four years, the band has grown more sophisticated in their song writing and in their musical chops.  But they still have a lot of fun onstage.  Eloisa and Lucia jump on their gear boxes to get close to the crowd.

Last time they tried their best to get the young kids in the audience as close to the front as possible.  It wasn’t possible this time, I guess.  I felt bad for the little kids who arrived early but weren’t allowed to get near the barricade.  I couldn’t help but think they could have asked the parents to back off and let the kids up front.

When I saw them last time, they had just released their debut album, which is full of young punk songs.  I didn’t like the album enough to get it, but it was fun–and Racist Sexist Boy is a great song for young girls to hear.

Here it was four years later and they’ve all grown up.  They also had a fifth member on stage Adan Diaz, their friend, who played synth and percussion as needed (there’s some songs we can’t play by ourselves).

When the show first stared, their voices were too quiet, but that was fixed fairly quickly.  I hadn’t listened to the new album yet, but I was so impressed by these new songs.  They have added all kinds of sounds to their basket.  They opened with the first song from the new album which has cool synths, percussion and a funky bass line.

They followed it up with Oh, from their debut.  It was one of the few songs from that album that they played, and it sounded bigger.  By the end of Growing Up all four members had sung lead. (more…)

[ATTENDED: October 4, 2026] Deux Visages

I saw Deux Visages open for Sir Chloe two years ago. I really enjoyed their set, which was made up of songs from their one EP.  Back then they were based in Miami, but they have since moved to Philly (so this was a hometown show).

The band was a four piece but are now a five piece. They are fronted by Daphney Homono (who has a shock of bleached hair).  This was especially notable because their set was lit very darkly and mostly in black and white.   The rest of the band includes Jack Chiu on guitar, and possibly Tony Jouvin on bass.  The other two members were not mentioned and I can’t find anything about them.

I was right in front of Jack and while his guitar was a little too loud, his playing was fantastic.  The songs where catchy (in a very 90s style) with nice guitar flourishes.  I remembered particularly enjoying Cheetah last time, with its very cool bouncy guitar riff.

But most of the set was from their as yet released new album (due out next month).  I really enjoyed the way Jack’s guitar was busy without overwhelming the melody or the vocals. (more…)

[ATTENDED: October 4, 2026] KulfiGirls

Back in June, I left a Mekons show a little early to head across town to catch KulfiGirls who I had just recently learned about.  Somehow, this show at W.O.W. was on only the second of four bands when I walked in and I was beat.  I just couldn’t stick it out for two full band sets (even if they were good).  So I hoped I’d get to see them soon and imagine my surprise when they were suddenly listed as the first opening band for the Linda Lindas!

I made sure to get to TLA early because sometimes (like tonight) the first band goes on BEFORE the announced start time.  And indeed, KulfiGirls came out on stage at 7:30.

Abi Natesh came out on stage looking beautiful in traditional Indian dress.  She sang and sat by an instrument and that’s when I realized with certainty that I had seen her perform with Pinkshift at Asbury Lanes a few years ago.  I didn’t know who she was or what her instrument was called, but tonight she had us say the instrument with her.  Not a sitar but a Veena.

Abi played a pretty, quiet melody on the instrument.  She may have been singing, but her mic was quiet at the start (it was eventually turned up).  Stephanie Bruning on the far side of the stage played flute  (and I love me some flute in my rock music!).   Guitarist Joan Natesh started building some tension while killer drummer Adesola Ogunleye played a martial beat.  Abi started playing a nifty lead line and then started singing from the seated position (I was glad I was near the front or I would never have seen her). [DID NOT ATTEND: January 25, 2025] Wunderhorse / Deux Visages

Wunderhorse was the Artist to Watch on WXPN and they were playing two of their songs a lot.  I didn’t respond well to the first one but the second one was pretty catchy.

I might have considered this show, but I had tickets to Soccer Mommy AND a Control Top show this evening, so this was low on my list. (more…)

Sir Chloe (Asbury Lanes, Asbury Park, NJ, June 2, 2024)

My daughter was excited to see Sir Chloe.  We saw them back in April.  I wasn’t sure if we’d be able to go for various reasons, so I snagged a ticket to this leg of the tour just in case.

She actually didn’t love the April show as much as I did, and I wasn’t sure if she’d want to go, but she did.  And we’re both glad we went.

Because my daughter was on crutches, and I had my cane, they put is in a handicapped spot which was next to the sound board and roped off from everyone else, but still plenty close to the action.

Last time, there were people talking a lot through the set.  This happened tonight as well–a group of guys mostly standing at the back (in front of our area) and just ignoring everything.  Fortunately, since they were in front of us, we couldn’t really hear them, they were just annoying.

I felt like Sir Chloe were more into this show than the Philly show.  Or maybe it was just easier to focus on this show (the Foundry show had a lot of distractions).  I swore that they played more songs for us than in Philly, but that was not true.  The one nice feature of  the show though was it was Asbury Park’s Pride Day, and the band made a special point of talking about it and how they were honored to be playing that evening.

So the setlist was the same, but perhaps it’s because I knew the show , that I enjoyed it more?

Like last time, when she came out, she had an oddly disaffected appearance.  She seemed quite aloof, but I am certain this time it was part of the act, because between songs she was very friendly.

I really enjoyed her new album quite a lot.  The songs are a bit more dramatic and push the envelope from the first album a little bit.  Songs like “Salivate” and “Hooves” are weird and intense, with loud guitars.

The earlier songs, though are also pretty cool.  “July” is a little more delicate on the edges, but with a nice fuzzy sound and Sir Chloe’s poppy vocal style.  “Animal” is a pretty dark song (her delivery is great) and it plays with the loud/soft vibe really well.

I realize that Sir Chloe is more or less a TikTok creation and so her audience is pretty young, but I think she could easily bust out of that pigeonhole.  In fact the audience was pretty varied.

The end of the set was when she played the big crowd pleasers.  I really really liked “Sedona.”  Her delivery is deadpan, but really catchy.  She followed that with “Michelle” the massive hit that was the only song I knew.  The crowd went nuts and the song was really fun (Michelle, you are a monster from hell).

Turns out that even though that is her big hit–the one that made her famous, I don’t like it nearly as much as her other songs.

I was surprised that that wasn’t the final song, but I guess it was more fun to end on the far more dancey “Feel Again.”

“Easy on You” was a fast tempo rocker from her first album.  Then she busted out an unreleased song (in the old days, I feel like the encore was meant for real crowd pleasers, but it seems like more and more it’s now the place to throw in one more brand new song).  It’s got a catchy, bratty “aha aha” that really sticks with you.

Then she ended with “Too Close.”  Which is her third biggest hit (according to Spotify) and the crowd was suitably excited to hear it.  Everyone enjoyed singing “I think it’s time for you to go.”

My daughter knew two people at the show (one she knew was there, the other was a surprise) so that was fun too.

And, like last time, the show was fairly short (75 minutes) which meant we got home fairly early, too!  I don’t know if I/we will see her again any time soon, but I’m very curious what the next record will be like.

Deux Visages (Asbury Lanes, Asbury Park, NJ, June 2, 2024) [SIR CHLOE]

[ATTENDED: June 2, 2024] Deux Visages

I hadn’t heard of Deux Visages when they were scheduled to open for Sir Chloe.  They are from Miami and at the time of the show had only released three singles!

Since then they have released an EP from which most of the songs that night came. The band is a four piece fronted by Daphney Homono.  The rest of the band includes Antoine Lappin on drums, Jack Chiu on guitar, and Tony Jouvin on bass.

They play a really enjoyable mic of shoegaze, garage, and surf rock with a healthy dose of fuzz.  There’s some diversity within the style with Excuses being a bit heavier with chanted moments.  And Go Away has short verse lines that lead to a big fluid chorus.

Their first single Cheetah (the second song they played) is a killer tune–super catchy and fun. (more…)
