[ATTENDED: May 23, 2023] PUP

When this mini tour was announced I was pretty psyched.  My son and I have seen PUP and loved them.  My daughter and I have seen Beach Bunny (twice) and loved them.  The only problem was that it was at Rooftop Pier 17–a massive pain in the butt to get to.

But I grabbed tickets anyway and surprised them earlier this month.

I assumed that PUP would go on last as they are the louder band.  But, in fact, they went on second. And that may have been wise as many of PUP’s more bro fanbase left after their set.

But as they were setting up, the sun hadn’t set yet and PUP came out to the orchestral version of their album (they just released some kid of answering machine version of their album from during the pandemic, which I’m pretty curious to hear).  They had a cool evening sky and marveled at being on a rooftop in New York City (it is a very cool venue).

And then they were off.  They opened with the two songs they closed the show with last time.  This being a shorter set, it was more of a greatest hits and less of a celebration of the last album.

There’s only one rule at a PUP show.  Look at your neighbors around you, have fun and look out for each other’s safety.  Then the moshing began in earnest. (more…)

[ATTENDED: May 23, 2023] Pool Kids

I think I heard of Pool Kids about a week before this show was announced.  I really liked their mix of punky alt rock and really cool guitar shredding (so much finger tapping).

I was thrilled that they were opening this show.

The Rooftop at Pier 17 is a great venue but it is a huge pain in the ass to get to.  Last time, we drove in and looked for parking for about 20 minutes.  This time we drove to Hoboken and took the PATH train to World Trade Center.  It was about a ten minute walk but we stopped or food.

We had left the house at 4 and wound up being late for Pool Kids who went on at 6:30.  So I don’t imagine going to too many more shows there.

We saw about three Pool Kids songs and they were great.  The band has great on stage presence and clearly were cool with a large crowd.  Vocalist/guitarist Christine Goodwyne was fun with a powerful voice that held high notes and also screamed with rage.  She and second guitarist Andy Anaya played some great harmony solos together too.

Bassist Nicolette Alvarez took lead vocals on one song, but mostly held down the low end.  And drummer Caden Clinton somehow made a lot of noise on a drumset that was off to the side (and was much smaller) than Pup’s massive kit behind them.

I think we came in during “Arm’s Length.”  But I was really excited that they saved “Conscious Uncoupling” late in their set.  It’s the first song on their album and is a perfect statement about the band.  Great vocals, a cool riff and tons of energy.

I’m really excited they’re doing a headline tour later this year so I can catch a full set.

[DID NOT ATTEND: November 25, 2022] Guster / Alex Edelman

When we saw Guster at the Wellmont, they announced that they would be playing Carnegie Hall. Carnegie Hall!

We went on vacation and I grabbed tickets from a museum on vacation.

And then late November rolled around and we realized that it was the Friday after Thanksgiving.  BLACK FRIDAY.  There was no way in hell we were going to New York City on Black Friday.  I’m going to posit that this is something only someone from New Jersey would say.

So, we did not see Guster at Carnegie Hall.

Alex Edelman is a comedian.  I just watched a clip of one of his bits on Stephen Colbert and it was hilarious.  Must check him out more.  And, frankly, I think a comedian is a good opening act for certain bands.

[DID NOT ATTEND: October 29, 2022] “Weird Al” Yankovic / Emo Phillips

I did not see this show when it was in Wilkes Barre in May.  However, I did see this show last night

And it was awesome of course.

I secretly loved the idea of seeing “Weird Al” at Carnegie Hall.  There’s just something wonderful about that.

But, having just seen the show in Philly and knowing that getting to Carnegie Hall is just a huge pain in the butt for me, I didn’t even bother getting tickets.

Which is fine.

I love the idea that I could have seen him three times in a year, especially since this tour doesn’t have as much repeating as his full scale tours do.

[DID NOT ATTEND: October 16, 2022] Muse / Thick

I’ve seen Muse twice and each show was amazing.  I told myself I would make a point of seeing them every time they toured here.

In June of this year they announced a short tour of American theaters, rather than arenas.  It sounded pretty great, but the closest one was The Beacon Theater in New York City and that is just too much of a pain in the ass to get to.  Even for Muse.

I also didn’t like the new album as much as previous ones so I wasn’t that excited to see it without the bombast.

A review of the show makes me happy I didn’t go (the show was only 80 minutes).  Brooklyn Vegan says

At Sunday night’s (10/16) show at Beacon Theatre, the band played six songs off their new album Will of the People, including the seasonally appropriate “You Make Me Feel Like It’s Halloween.”

Their 80-minute set also included “Uprising,” “Psycho,” “Supermassive Black Hole,” “Hysteria,” “Minimum” and more, and they finished with spaghetti western epic “Knights of Cydonia.”

I had no idea that Thick was opening.  I didn’t even learn it until writing this. I might have gone just for the double bill as Thick are pretty awesome.

[DID NOT ATTEND: September 28, 2022] Pet Shop Boys / New Order / Paul Oakenfield: The Unity Tour [rescheduled from September 12, 2020 and September 22, 2021]

This concert was postponed twice.  And now it was finally happening.

I had seen Pet Shop Boys a few years ago and definitely wanted to see them again.  I had never seen New Order but new it would be a fun show.  I had no real opinion of Paul Oakenfield.

And yet… (more…)

[ATTENDED: August 2, 2022] Girl in Red

After seeing Girl in Red earlier this year, I didn’t think we’d be seeing her again.  But then my daughter’s friend invited her to go along to see Girl in Red at the Rooftop at Pier 17.

I was glad I didn’t have to drive as getting there was a hassle.  But getting into the venue was cool.  I enjoyed the way the whole place was designed (ads for the show on every floor as we escalatored to the roof).  And then the rooftop itself was really quite lovely.

There are excellent views of the city and the camera crew did some excellent editing, occasionally splicing up Marie Ulven’s face with the crescent moon that was hanging in the sky.

We both really enjoyed the show at Union Transfer and assumed that another show would be equally go.  We didn’t really consider that an outdoor show would be any different.  The setlist wasn’t really, but the stage production was much bigger.

She had three screens and even had smoke machines late in the set! (more…)

[ATTENDED: August 2, 2022] Blu deTiger

I had heard of Blu deTiger and knew her song “Figure It Out” which I quite liked.

I didn’t realize that she was a bass player and lead singer–she played some great lead bass lines and did some good funky riffs too.

Blu has been playing bass since she was seven and has been in bands on and off for many years so she has her stage show down really well–she’s flirty and funny and knows how to play an audience.

It also turns out that she’s something of a TikTok sensation, but somehow my daughter wasn’t familiar with her.

[ATTENDED: August 2, 2022] binki

My daughter’s friend invited her to go see Girl in Red at the Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City.  Part of the deal was that I went as well.  Which was cool as I enjoyed the last Girl in Red show quite a lot.

Best of all, the friend’s dad (who I like, so that’s a relief!) was driving.

We got into the city, did not get to use the parking space I pre-paid for (who know why) but found another garage after some fruitless and frustrating driving around.

We grabbed a slice nearby and walked down to the Pier.  Which has some very cool art and a very excellent walk way up to the rooftop.

We arrived after binki had started.  I’d never heard of this Pennsylvanian rapper.  The sound was terrible where we were, but I realized we were right in front of one of the massive speakers so I moved us to more of the center and the sound was much better and we managed to get in  the shade (late August sun can be brutal).  (more…)

[ATTENDED: May 21, 2022] The Music Man

S. loves musicals.  She especially loves The Music Man. So when it was revived for Broadway and was starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, I knew I had to get tickets for her.

And then the pandemic shut down Broadway.  I believe the show was supposed to open in 2020 (I was going to get us tickets back in 2019).  But then Broadway bounced back and the show opened in December 2021.  We managed to get tickets for May 2022 (purchased on October 3, 2021).  We were in Left Mezzanine Row D seats 49-51.

The seats were a little far to the left, but were not obstructed in any real way (there was one scene where we couldn’t quite see what was going on in the one corner, but that’s okay. most of the action was out front.

We opted for the matinee performance because, well, hell, it was much easier to get into the city early and to get home at a reasonable hour.  Or so we thought.   Our train in had delays.  Our transfer train into Penn Station had an overflowing toilet!  It was pretty stressful.  It was also crazy hot.  But we did enjoy our dirty water dogs on the street corner before heading into the theater.
