[DID NOT ATTEND: April 18, 2024] Girl in Red / Momma

I had bought a ticket for my daughter and I to see Sir Chloe on this evening.  But when Girl in Red announced her show, I immediately grabbed a pair just in case this was preferred.  I figured they would both be easy to re-sell.

And then Girl in Red announced a second show on the night before this one, so I grabbed those tickets and planned to sell the tickets for this show.

It was kind of fun for her to go to two shows in a row.  Although she enjoyed the Girl in Red show a lot more than the Sir Chloe show.

I assume the show was similar to the show we saw , but I think out show may have been a bit more fun (what with the wedding and all).

[ATTENDED: April 17, 2024] Girl in Red / Momma

My daughter and I saw Girl in Red twice in 2022.  Her live show is a ton of fun and I was really impressed with how much she changed it over the few months between our shows.  Her new album is all about how she’s “back.”  This puzzled me a bit as she hadn’t been “gone” for very long.  But if you’re online all the time, two years is an eternity.

As soon as this show was announced I bought us tickets.  This venue was much bigger then the one we saw her in and her stage show expanded to fit it.

There was a giant video screen with cool visuals, there were steps and interestingly designed elements.  There was a gigantic swivel light which actually became a projection screen for a song.  And during one of the songs a part of the stage rose up and she was thirty feet above the stage.

She opened the set with the rocking title track.  She was a ton of fun as she ran back and forth across the stage.  Amazingly she was wearing a button shirt, sweater and suit jacket, and I was hot in shorts.   But her energy was infectious and the crowd was super psyched. (more…)

[ATTENDED: April 17, 2024] Momma

As soon as Girl in Red announced these shows I grabbed a ticket for my daughter and I.

I was super excited that Momma was the opening band because their song “Speeding 72” is one of my favorite songs of the last couple of years.   I’ve heard it on the radio enough that I checked out their debut album and I love the whole thing.  They’ve got a 90’s alt rock (Veruca Salt) vibe that I’m thrilled to hear again.

I would normally have snuck closer to the stage, but my daughter’s not a close-up fan, so we hung at the back of the pit (which in The Met is not far at all).

I enjoyed Momma’s whole (but rather short) set.  They played four songs from Household Name, including Medicine, the show opener and Speeding 72.

They played two new songs which sounded like they are mixing their sound up a little going forward.   And they played a single from last year, which also sounded really familiar.

Center stage with newly died red hair was Allegra Weingarten, and off to her right was Etta Friedman.  They sang together perfectly in that close harmony, almost whispered vocals that are a little hard to hear (especially in a bigger venue).  But they sounded great.

The band is always described as just the two of them, but thee were two other people on stage too, a drummer and a bassist.  Toward the end of the set, Etta switched instruments with the bassist.

I was pleased that the crowd reacted positively to them (being an opening act can suck) and I’m glad I got to see them before they totally take off.

[ATTENDED: August 2, 2022] Girl in Red

After seeing Girl in Red earlier this year, I didn’t think we’d be seeing her again.  But then my daughter’s friend invited her to go along to see Girl in Red at the Rooftop at Pier 17.

I was glad I didn’t have to drive as getting there was a hassle.  But getting into the venue was cool.  I enjoyed the way the whole place was designed (ads for the show on every floor as we escalatored to the roof).  And then the rooftop itself was really quite lovely.

There are excellent views of the city and the camera crew did some excellent editing, occasionally splicing up Marie Ulven’s face with the crescent moon that was hanging in the sky.

We both really enjoyed the show at Union Transfer and assumed that another show would be equally go.  We didn’t really consider that an outdoor show would be any different.  The setlist wasn’t really, but the stage production was much bigger.

She had three screens and even had smoke machines late in the set! (more…)

[ATTENDED: August 2, 2022] Blu deTiger

I had heard of Blu deTiger and knew her song “Figure It Out” which I quite liked.

I didn’t realize that she was a bass player and lead singer–she played some great lead bass lines and did some good funky riffs too.

Blu has been playing bass since she was seven and has been in bands on and off for many years so she has her stage show down really well–she’s flirty and funny and knows how to play an audience.

It also turns out that she’s something of a TikTok sensation, but somehow my daughter wasn’t familiar with her.

[ATTENDED: August 2, 2022] binki

My daughter’s friend invited her to go see Girl in Red at the Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City.  Part of the deal was that I went as well.  Which was cool as I enjoyed the last Girl in Red show quite a lot.

Best of all, the friend’s dad (who I like, so that’s a relief!) was driving.

We got into the city, did not get to use the parking space I pre-paid for (who know why) but found another garage after some fruitless and frustrating driving around.

We grabbed a slice nearby and walked down to the Pier.  Which has some very cool art and a very excellent walk way up to the rooftop.

We arrived after binki had started.  I’d never heard of this Pennsylvanian rapper.  The sound was terrible where we were, but I realized we were right in front of one of the massive speakers so I moved us to more of the center and the sound was much better and we managed to get in  the shade (late August sun can be brutal).  (more…)

[ATTENDED: March 16, 2022] Girl in Red

My daughter, T., became a huge fan of Girl in Red a little while ago.  When Girl in Red announced a show at my favorite club, Union Transfer, I knew I had to get tickets.  So, I got this pair back in June of 2021.   It seemed like the show was a lifetime away.

And then it finally arrived.

Our friends had recently gone to a show there and had arrived at 5 (doors opened at 7) to ensure a prime spot.  I have been to Union Transfer dozens of times and have never arrived earlier than 7:30 and always gotten a decent spot (sometimes right at the front).

But I’ve clearly never been to a sold out Girl in Red show.  Because we arrived at 7:30 (a wee but later than I wanted to, I admit) to find a huge line outside!  (I’ve never seen that before).  By the time we got in, the place was packed!  The one okay thing about this is that we decided to get merch first since we had no hope of getting any closer.  The other okay thing was that Girl in Red fans seems to be pretty short, so even though we were pretty far back, we could see the stage pretty clearly.

Girl in Red’s band came out–five guys dressed in black–and made a U at the back of the stage.  They started playing music and Marie Ulven bounced onto the stage and just started rocking all over the place to “You Stupid Bitch.”  Swinging her hair and bounding from one side of the stage to the other.

The crowd was insane from the get go.  They screamed and yelled and sang along.  A girl behind us must have been told that it was important to shriek at the top of your lungs at the end of each song because she did so in the exact same pitch and frequency (one long, two short) after each song.  T. and I decided that she sounded like when a fox screams at night–that ear piercing, spine chilling sound. And, she was perfectly at ear level with me.  Good grief.

I knew most of Girl in Red’s album from multiple in house plays, but I clearly didn’t know what the big songs were going to be because she played “girls” third and I thought sure that was going to be a much later song.

Before introducing “we fell in love in October,” she told us that she had a new girlfriend, although they didn’t fall in love in October.

The ban left and she brought out her acoustic guitar to play “I’ll Cal You Mine.”  It was great to hear her sing without the rest of the band.

I also assumed that “Serotonin” would be the big set ender, but she played that right in the middle  It sounded fantastic.

Her band was really great, too.  Her lead guitarist was really quite impressive and her bass player was a lot of fun, jumping around.  But really, none of us were looking at them.  She did acknowledge them a few times and when she spoke to them, her Norwegian accent came out on force.  Her normal stage speaking voice is completely un-accented.  I was amazed at how non-Norwegian she sounded until it slipped out.

She talked about an old racist homophobic uncle that she had who told her to make her songs “less gay” and we all mocked him.  She said she used to think that he was old and couldn’t change.  But there are plenty of old people who are neither racist nor homophobic.  So there.

For the remainder of the show she kept the energy high.  Even in the somewhat more mellow songs, the energy remained high.

When she ended the show with “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend,” the crowd, which I didn’t think could get any more wild, ramped it up even more.  And when Marie dove into the crowd at the end of the song the place erupted.

The song faded when she got back up onstage and some people even started to leave, but she told us it wasn’t done yet, and she grabbed a water bottle and doused the front row and sang the chorus a few more times.

It was quite a show.

And even though it was kind of short (relatively speaking), it was the the perfect length for the amount of music she has released and it got us home at a fairly reasonable hour on a school night.

The stage for the show was flanked by large banks of really bright lights.  Not an expensive display, I wouldn’t think, but very effective.  And I left the show thinking that girl in red could easily be playing much much bigger venues.

[ATTENDED: March 12, 2022] Holly Humberstone

I thought there was some excitement that Holly Humberstone was opening for Girl in Red, but it turned out that T. had never heard of her.

Well, I was impressed by her.  She played guitar, keyboard, piano and created live beats on the drum machine while singing.  And her voice was really lovely too.

Her songs are on the pop side but with some good loud guitars from time to time.  “Please Don’t Leave Just Yet” was the synthy song (that featured sped up samples of her voice trilling in the background.  I enjoyed the way she jumped from the synth rack to the piano mid-song.

Humberstone has a couple of EPs out.  And I had to laugh when she said she was going to play the first song she’d ever released–way back in 2019.  But it was a sweet song she’d written for her sister called “Deep End.”

She also played a new song called “London is Lonely,” which was far more plaintive than the other songs and showed Holly’s range. (more…)
