[DID NOT ATTEND: June 22, 2024] Slomo Sapiens / Wax Jaw / Flatwaves

My failed quest to see Wax Jaw again continues.  This show was announced as Wax Jaw’s last show for a while, as they regroup and plan to record a new album.  So I would have really liked to go.  But I had tickets to see Frank Turner and his band who I have been trying to see for longer.  So, never mind.

I love the name Slomo Sapiens  I first heard of them last year and I wrote

Slomo Sapiens continues the tradition of great band names from Philadelphia.  I didn’t know much about them, but they are described as a psychedelic “sludge rock” trio, which sounds pretty good to me.  I’ve listened to a couple of songs and psychedelic sludge rock is right on the nose.

This show was actually an album release party for The Holy Babble, their second album.  It’s pretty good and I imagine they are lots of fun live.

Flatwaves are Philly-based garagegaze. And that’s pretty accurate.  They have a shoegaze vibe but with a kind of heaviness that’s a twist on the genre.

I’m sure this would have been an enjoyable show

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 22, 2024] Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls / Amigo the Devil / Bridge City Sinners / Micah Schnabel & Vanessa Jean Speckman

I had been wanting to see him for a long time because I’d heard his live shows were amazing.  I saw him last year in a solo (more or less) performance.  And it was great.  So next, I wanted to see him with his band because I’ve heard the band version is even wilder with a more punk aesthetic and I do love a fun punk show.

For the last couple of years he has disappointed me by having a show on Mother’s Day and then on Father’s Day.  This year it was the week after and I was sure I would be able to go.

And then my son and his friend had car/motorcycle trouble about 90 minutes away.  There was no way I could go out and have fun while worrying about them.  So I stayed home (they had made arrangements to get home by then, but had been out in the heat and sun for nearly ten hours).

So, yet again, I miss Frank Turner and his band.  Luckily, he never stops touring, so I’m sure they’ll be back again, on some other inconvenient holiday, no doubt. (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 21, 2024] Folly / Paulson / Teenage Halloween / The Best of the Worst / Silk Sheets

I heard about this show because I saw Teenage Halloween open for THICK and really liked them.  I assumed they were headlining, but as more details came to light, they were in the middle of five bands I knew I wasn’t going to go.

Folly are a screaming punk band.

Hailing from northern NJ, Folly’s eclectic sound fuses the fury of hardcore, chaos of metal, urgency of punk rock, and jubilation of ska/reggae. They are known for their energized and immersive live shows,

Paulson was from Midland Park which is near where I grew up.  They apparently broke up many years ago and this is  their first show in 12 years.

The Best of the Worst are a new Jersey ska-core band.  So it’s screaming punk, with horns!

Silk Sheets are another Jersey band that are the loudest and most cathartic of the lineup.

Teenage Halloween definitely rocks, but they don;t seem to be quite heavy enough for this show.  This would have been exhausting.

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 19, 2024] Airiel / Blushing / Bodywash

I saw Blushing open for Ringo Deathstarr and I really liked them a lot.  That was five years ago and I was ready to see them again.  Even if they were second on the bill.

I hadn’t heard of Airiel even though they’d been around for over twenty years.  They had been pretty dormant for much of it. so I guess its not too surprising.  I listened to some of their songs and really liked them. And then I felt as though I liked them a little less each time I listened again.

They describe their music as “It’s loud, it’s pretty and you can dance to it”

I was intrigued, but ultimately decided to stay home because I had gone out the two nights before and was going out the two nights after.

Bodywash play a shoegaze style (with synths) and two singers Chris Steward and Rosie Long Decter.  They are from Montreal. (more…)

[POSTPONED: June 19, 2024] Kathleen Edwards / Ken Yates [moved to July 24]

I once thought that I would never get to see Kathleen Edwards.  And then she resurfaced from her coffee shop and I saw her three times in a year.

I would have liked to see her at this show (I saw her at an outdoor show two years ago) but King of Prussia is really far.  And then the whole tour was postponed because she and her band ran into Visa issues (for the first time ever).

She managed to rescheduled the dates (I guess there’s a good reason to do short two week tours, they are much easier to reschedule).  (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 16, 2024] Pallbearer / REZN / The Keening

I’m more or less done with going  to heavy metal shows.  There are still a few bands I’ll go to see, but overall, there’s not much left that I’m curious about.

Pallbearer are a doom metal band (a subgenre I find myself drawn to more than other subgenres), but they mix in elements of prog metal as well, which is a major draw for me.  I’ve never seen them, but I would very much like to.

I dithered about this show because I had a few other shows around it and wasn’t sure if I wanted to go out on a Sunday night.   Then about two weeks before the show I realized that this was Father’s Day, and I certainly wasn’t going to go to a metal show by myself on Father’s Day.

REZN is a band I didn’t know, but when I checked out a few songs I really liked them.  Angry Metal Guy describes

an esoteric brand of psychedelic doom that finds unique ways to incorporate each member’s talents. Synth maestro Spencer Oulette boasts credits for piano, sax, and flute, and bassist Phil Cangelosi even busts out a rainstick to set the mood.

[CANCELLED: June 15, 2024] Lloyd Cole

I’ve never been a huge fan of Lloyd Cole, but I like a bunch of his songs.

My memory is really shaky on how I found out about him. I was certain that a friend of mine got me into him, but years later when I mentioned Lloyd Cole to her, she had no idea who he was.  Someone clearly introduced me to him, and I feel like I can picture the room that we listened to him in, but obviously I was wrong.

I haven’t really given Lloyd much thought over the last few years.  I wasn’t planning on going to this show (I mean, it was the same night as Man Man), but I was intrigued that he had cancelled the tour (as did Man Man–which made me briefly nervous that they knew something bad was happening).

But Lloyd’s reason were personal:

April 26, 2024

I’m taking some time away from music.I was sick on tour in Australia, I was sick on tour in Scandinavia, I’m sick again in Portugal. I have some kind of virus. This time my mental health has been impacted.I’m fine, for now, I’m on antibiotics. I have people to talk to. The plan is to get the seven Portuguese shows done. Then I’ll fly home early May.I need to address the root of the issue. I’d rather not go into details here. Honestly I don’t know exactly what’s going on but I’m pretty sure some major changes are needed in my lifestyle and work schedule. I’ll be consulting my MD and we’ll figure a plan. Most likely I’ll be in some kind of treatment facility for while, hopefully like The Magic Mountain.I’ve cancelled the US East Coast shows that were scheduled for June. I’m keeping May, June and July free to heal/recover. I look forward to some golf in Ireland in late August and then September solo shows in the Ireland and the UK. We’ll reschedule the cancelled US dates as quickly as we can.I’ll see you all in the Autumn.Sincerely,LC.

[CANCELLED: June 15, 2024] Man Man

I was pretty thrilled to hear that Man Man had a new album out and that  they were touring it–June 15 at Underground Arts!

And then one day the show wasn’t listed anymore.  And when I went to Underground Arts for a different show, they told me it was cancelled.

It took a few days, but on May 23, they finally posted

Sorry to everyone who was looking forward to our upcoming US @manmanbandband tour. We’re gutted by the postponement. unforeseen circumstances took control of the wheel. Hopefully we’ll wrestle it back in the future. Our album still drops on June 7 & and we are so goddamn proud of it.”

So no explanation for the cancellation, but at least  thy acknowledged it and (one hopes) they will reschedule for next year.

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 14, 2022] Lower Wolves / Coca Leaves & Pearls

Again, I don’t care much for cover bands, but this one looked kind of interesting, mostly because Chris Forsyth is in Coca Leaves & Pearls.

But the two bands together were probably a good time.  It was a slim chance that I was goingto go to this and when Kim Gordon was announced for the same night, I knew I wouldn’t be going.

But that is my favorite R.E.M. period as well.

Lower Wolves
Focusing on R.E.M.’s early period as a beloved college/alternative live act, Lower Wolves perform R.E.M. covers from the years 1982-1987. A typical set includes album tracks, singles and obscurities delivered with the energy and intensity that characterized R.E.M.’s live shows in the 1980s.

Coca Leaves & Pearls
Featuring guitarist Chris Forsyth and members of Florry and Radar Honey, Coca Leaves & Pearls is a tribute to the spirit and vibe of 1970s Neil Young and Crazy Horse, particularly offering a guided tour of Neil’s mid-1970s years in “the ditch.”

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 14, 2024] The Musical Box

I’ve said many times that I don’t go to see cover bands.  But this cover band who plays early, prog Genesis, was an exception.

I saw them earlier this year (my first show of the new year) and loved it.

As I said,

I’m so glad I went to this show.  And I would absolutely see them again.  It’s crazy to think that they have been together for 30 years.  A cover band that is older than most other bands!

I didn’t go to this show for two reasons.  The first was that I don’t really love Keswick Theatre.  It’s also really inconvenient to get to.  The second, later reason, is that Kim Gordon played the same night, and I wasn’t going to miss her.
