[ATTENDED: February 24, 2022] Lunar Vacation
The Beths were supposed to play shows in 2020 at World Cafe Live. First in April, then in August. Then that was all scrapped and then rescheduled for January 2022. That was then pushed back until February.
Weakened Friends were slotted to open for them over these shows. But the new show had Lunar Vacation signed up for them.
And they were delightful.
They are from Atlanta, and I had to laugh when singer Grace Repasky asked if anyone did the Wordle yet. When we acknowledged that we had, she commented that it was a very British word (Bloke).
Repasky and lead guitarist Maggie Geeslin were up front and they laid down a gentle guitar wash and jangly chords like in “Shrug.”
They brought a mellow vibe along with “Swimming” as well.
The boys in the band were dressed for the chilly Philadelphia night, with keyboardist Matteo DeLurgio and bassist Ben Wulkan were wearing sweaters and drummer Connor Dowd had an a jacket. It was, indeed very cold that night. But not in Underground Arts.
The band put out an album recently called Inside Every Fig is a Dead Wasp which I thought was an odd statement. And then a couple days after seeing this album we were watching a show called Pivoting and a sub- sub- plot was that there was a dead wasp in a fig! Weird coincidence. That also explains their amusing merch (see below).
Most of the songs came from the album. But the band has been around since at least 2017 and they threw in some old songs, too.
They said it was that time of the night and asked if anyone was named Colin. No one was. I wonder what would happen in the song “Too Late, Colin” if there was someone named that there.
Most of the set was pretty mellow, although after they finished “Monterey,” they had a rocking instrumental jam that lasted about two minutes. Repasky even got to use the whammy bar on her very fascinatingy-shaped guitar.
I really enjoyed their set and am glad they opened.
