[ATTENDED: December 6, 2024] The Aimee Mann & Ted Leo Christmas Show

My wife and I saw Aimee Mann 18 years ago.  When this show was announced, it sounded like a great way to see her again.  Way back then I didn’t know anything about Ted Leo.  And when the two of them got together as The Both, I was interested more for her than for him.  Now, all these years later, I’ve seen Ted Leo twice and am more interested in The Both because of him.

But I assumed that this would be a fun Christmas night out.

And it was.  But it also wasn’t what I was expecting at all.

I assumed that it would be the two of them singing Christmas songs and that their guests, the amazing Paul F. Tompkins, Nellie McKay and Josh Gondelman would add humor and song to the sets.

They had a backing band (whom they introduced but whose names I missed).  There was a bass player, a drummer and keys.  Aimee and Ted both played guitar.  The backing band started playing the haunting opening of Paul McCartney’s Wonderful Christmastime.  Then Aimee and Ted walked out (both dressed head to toe in black, which amused me) and sang.

And that’s basically what I expected.  Up next was a Christmas song that I barely knew but which I loved immediately–Merry Xmas Everybody by Slade.  It became a favorite Christmas song for me. (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 5, 2024] Say She She / Carly Moffa

My wife has been really enjoying Say She She as of late.  I was a little surprised that they hadn’t done a show in Philly in a little while and then it was announced that they were playing the Summer Concert Series in Camden County. I had been to this location once two years ago and really liked it.

I thought we would both enjoy going to this delightful outdoor setting to enjoy some gorgeous harmonies.  We even both took off work the day after (for unrelated reasons).  But then it decided to rain.  A lot.  We weren’t sure of the show was going on (there are no tickets, so no way to let anyone know what was going on).  We decided not to risk it, so we stayed home.

I found out later that the show had been moved to the Scottish Rite Auditorium in Collingswood. I don’t know anything about that venue and probably wouldn’t have wanted to go there, so I don’t feel bad that we stayed home. (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: April 13, 2024] Richard Thompson / Jonatha Brooke

I’ve seen Richard Thompson more than almost anyone else.

I really want to see him with a full band, but that doesn’t seem to happen much in our area anymore.  He even announced a tour with a full band, but this show was meant to be solo (with help from Zara Phillips).

I have never been to the Scottish Rite Auditorium, which was another reason that I was looking forward to this show.

And then I wound up having surgery earlier in the week.  I probably could have still gone to this show, but honestly it just felt like too much work, getting all the way down there and walking to the venue, all while trying to take it easy and recover.

I know he’s playing in Bethlehem later this year, but again, I don’t think it’s with a full band.  I need to hear Richard rock out on an electric guitar again!

I know Jonatha Brooke from when I used to live in Boston.  She was in a band called The Story and then went solo.  I really liked her album Plumb (1995) and then I pretty much lost track of her.  I had no idea she was still regularly putting out music.

I would have liked to hear her, although I see from the setlist that she didn’t play anything I knew.
