[DID NOT ATTEND: November 18, 2022] I Prevail / Pierce the Veil / Fit for a King / Stand Atlantic

My son has really been getting into Pierce the Veil lately.  I didn’t know them, but I’ve really enjoyed what I heard from them.  They haven’t toured in a long time, so when they announced this show (second on the bill), I grabbed us tickets.

I like the singer’s voice and that they seem to mix genres in interesting ways all within a heavy base.

But as the show drew closer, and I told my son that Pierce the Veil probably wasn’t going to play that long and that we’d have to sit through at least two other bands, possibly three others if we stayed until the end, we kind of agreed that maybe we didn’t need to go to this show.  Especially since, assuredly, Pierce the Veil would tour as a headliners soon (which they have since done).

So I sold my tickets for a small profit and we stayed home.  I mean honestly four bands is practically a festival.

I didn’t really know any of the other bands.  I’d heard of I Prevail–they were supposed to tour with Ice Nine Kills

Here’s a hilarious review of the I Prevail album True Power from Sputnik Music

No one does it quite like I Prevail. There’s something to be said about a band capable of pleasing dudebro-core fans and “I-dig-Evanescence” mums alike. Unfortunately, the majority of that thing isn’t exactly positive. Everything I Prevail does is so predictable, so glossy, so vapid that it’s easy to see why they aren’t exactly revered. Simultaneously, everything I Prevail does is so predictable, so glossy, so listenable that it’s easy to see why the majority of their songs have accumulated well over ten million streams on Spotify. Three years after the highly successful and utterly disposable Trauma, metalcore’s most slippery boys have returned with the brand new full length True Power to please their legions of fans.  ….  While most elements of True Power are perfectly listenable (outside of every single rapped verse), there’s hardly a single original idea to be found on the record.

Other reviews are more positive.

Fir for a King is a metalcore band out of Texas.  It seems like there’s either a ton of metalcore bands these days or the bands that I want to see keep getting paired with metalcore bands.  They opened for Ice Nine Kills in Philly, but we ate cheesteaks and missed their set.  Ice Nine Kills seems to be the common thread here, I guess.

My new favorite site for snarky review, Sputnik Music says

On one hand, I marvel at the technical competence and musicianship of this band. I know that as a drummer I am not, and never will be, as good as Trey Celaya. The musician in me, knowing I am nowhere near as capable as these guys, finds it hard to be objective. What right do I have to judge or be critical? I am not the one spending years writing the songs, going on tour, or releasing the albums. I sure couldn’t write it myself. I’m not the “man in the arena” so to speak.

On the other hand, as I continue writing reviews and taking a more methodical or academic approach to listening to music, it’s very difficult to dismiss the shortcomings and drawbacks of this record. Furthermore, I am a consumer, and it is an unfortunate reality that one of the surest ways to lose customers in an industry as competitive or cutthroat as music is to fail to routinely provide an improved product.

Herein lies the problem with The Hell We Create: By itself, the album is passable, acceptable, adequate, or whatever other adjective you want to use for something that is perfectly alright. Unfortunately, next to Dark Skies, those descriptions could just as easily be swapped for words such as mediocre or middling, second-rate or passé. So while it is marginally better than The Path, it is not anywhere close to the quality it could or should be, and Fit For A King’s struggle to settle on where they are going musically greatly overshadows any forward progress they might be making.

I rather like the catchy parts of the songs.

Stand Atlantic are an Australian pop-punk band that seems to have embraced a more metal sound on their newest album.  Their first two albums are pretty widely varied.  They are no doubt playing up their heavier side for this tour.  But I think I like some of their other stuff better.

[CANCELLED: October 28, 2020] Five Finger Death Punch / Ice Nine Kills / I Prevail / Papa Roach [moved to May 6]

indexAs they started to say people could gather in smaller groups, the likelihood of huge arena shows like this seemed in doubt.  We can all hope that as things get better, new shows will be on the horizon.

At some point (I don’t know when exactly), the band posted this message

Message from the band: We were really looking forward to getting the green light for hitting the road in 2020.

As it stands – and probably as no surprise to you – our Fall tour with Papa Roach, I Prevail and Ice Nine Kills, unfortunately, has to be canceled. Rest assured, we are watching the situation very closely and we will be back on the road the moment it becomes possible 👊🏼💥 We hope to see you guys soon and in the meantime, follow us on social media for news, new music, special announcements, giveaways and all kinds of surprises. 👊💥

[POSTPONED: May 6, 2020] Five Finger Death Punch / Ice Nine Kills / I Prevail / Papa Roach [moved to October 28]

indexMy son and his friends were going to go to this show primarily for Ice Nine Kills.

He and I saw Ice Nine Kills last summer and thought they were amazing.  So good in fact that I offered to be the chaperone of this show (rather than his friend’s dad).  It might still happen.

I feel like disappointment is inevitable since INK are opening, not headlining.  And they wont be on as long or be able to do as much (I assume), but even a little INK is better than none.

I actually don’t know Five Finger Death Punch, although I’ve certainly heard of them.  I had no idea they were [according to Wikipedia] one of the most successful heavy metal bands of the decade.  The few songs I’ve heard were alternately catchy or really vulgar.

I don’t know I Prevail, but they are a metalcore band, like so many other bands these days.  Catchy with some screamo vocals.

I’ve known of Papa Roach for a long time but have never heard them.  I feel like I dismissed them early on because they were part of the nu metal scene.

Papa Roach has been described as alternative metal, alternative rock, hard rock,nu metal, rap metal.  Allmusic has compared the band’s recent work to 1980s glam metal-a knowing update of an ’80s Sunset Strip sleaze rock outfit with new elements of djent.

I listened to one song (from 2005) and found it catchy and another song (from 2015) and heard the djent influences.

I think this entire show would have been exhausting.

[ATTENDED: November 25, 2019] Ice Nine Kills

I was unfamiliar with Ice Nine Kills until my son started talking about them.  Then his friend invited him to see a show at the Starland Ballroom on May 3 (Ice Nine Kills was not headlining–the lineup was Falling In Reverse, Ice Nine Kills, From Ashes to New and New Years Day).  So I was a little bummed that he didn’t go to his first club show with me, but it’s much cooler that he went with his friend.  He loved the show.

So when they announced that they were playing at TLA and headlining the Octane Accelerator Tour (a Sirius XM thing), I made sure we got tickets (even though it was a Monday night).

The show was (I’m exhausted just thinking about it) FIVE bands and started at 6PM (!).

The lineup was Ice Nine Kills, Fit For A King, Light The Torch, Make Them Suffer, & Awake At Last.

Since it was a Monday night, I knew it would be really hard to get there for the first band, so we decided we would assume we’d miss Awake at Last.  Then on November 5th, Make Them Suffer (who are Australian) announced:

Unfortunately we have had some serious setbacks with immigration, and were unable to secure the visas we needed in time for these shows.

TLA said the show would go on at the same time which was great for us since it meant we would get home about 30 minutes earlier.  I also figured I’d take my son for some good ol’ Philly cheese steaks before the show since Jim’s is just a few doors down.

We enjoyed out cheese steaks quite a lot and as we walked past the theater I asked the guy at the door which band was on.  He said the second band was on and since we had plenty of time, we decided to go to Atomic City Comics (which is a wonderful store).

We headed back to TLA figuring we’d be in the middle of Fit for a King.  But as we walked in, they were between bands.  The woman at the merch table said that ice Nine Kills was up in ten minutes!  We’d missed all of the opening bands! (more…)
