I was supposed to see Pollyanna open for Jhariah back in January.  They had to bail because they were touring with someone else.  I was also suppose to see them at the Ukie Club, but it didn’t happen.

So I was excited to see them at this show which was listed as being at Asbury Lanes ut actually took place on the Baronet Rooftop at the Asbury Hotel.  I have no idea if that’s a thing that happens much.  I don’t know if it ‘s a bigger, better venue or just a change of venue.

I was looking forward to experiencing this whole night.  And then we booked our vacation for that week.  So, no Pollyanna yet again.

Latewaves is a rock band from Asbury Park, NJ that is trying their best.  They do rock although in a more poppy than punky way.  They seem like they’d be fun live.

Froggy is a Philadelphia based queer punk band. The members are all quite young.  Actually that was true when I first posted about them two years ago.  I don’t know how old they are now, but I’m glad they’re still going.

Musically they are pretty tight and their musical sense is all over the place with punk noise (love it!).  Their first single 7-11 Nachos has an early Black Flag (TV Party) vibe.  But I’m not a fan of the singer’s voice.

I was pretty excited when this show was announced.  I thought my daughter would really enjoy this.  She loves PhilaMOCA as a venue and I thought she’d really enjoy this young(ish) punk band.

I saw Skating Polly seven years ago when they opened for X.  Unfortunately, I arrived really late and caught only a couple songs from them.  I’d been intrigued by them for a while–two sisters, both teenagers (technically Kelli was NINE when they formed), started a band as a duo and played some kick ass punk.  Seven years ago primary singer Kelli was only 19, older sister Peyton was 24 and their brother Kurtis (no age given) was playing drums with them.

They have been touring forever and put on a super fun show.  I knew it would be a good time.

Then things got in the way.  She had stuff to do after school and couldn’t go.  I thought about going myself but then had to do some driving duty.  And considering their set is fairly short and would be the same songs as last year, I decided to just chill at home instead.

Lord Friday the 13th is a dollar store trash-glam punk band based in Austin, TX. Fronted by siblings Felix (vocals) and Sloane (guitar) Lenz, their sound has been described as the Velvet Underground meets the New York Dolls, with hints of early Iggy and the Stooges. While honoring the origins of punk and the energy it birthed with it, Lord Friday continues the legacy of change and pushing boundaries on societal norms that true punk is known for. Challenging gender roles and conformity, Lord Friday is here to empower and inspire a new kind of punk for a new world. (more…)

Two years ago The Dirty Nil opened for The Menzingers in a show I couldn’t make.  But I’ve been intrigued by them ever since.

I wanted to go to this show, but it turned out that Skating Polly, a band I’ve wanted to see ever since I caught the last song of their set when they opened for X was playing the same night.

Stupid double booked nights.  This whole night sounds pretty great and it turned out to be a tough choice.

For the strapping lads comprising Toronto rock trio The Dirty Nil, Big Bear was so much more than a convenience store parking lot they gazed upon from their second-floor bathroom window – the trash-strewn asphalt stage where seemingly every element of the human experience played out like a never-ending theatrical production.

The house was all at once a shared residence, creative commons, and god-forsaken pirate ship, its revolving cast of crewmates armed with instruments, alcohol, and overdriven amplifiers. Indeed, they lived, laughed, and loved there even though no kitschy wall sign from a suburban mom’s Etsy shop told them to.

“Bye Bye Big Bear” is a loving musical tribute to that unforgettable time and place, and The Dirty Nil’s first new offering since their impactful 2021 album Fuck Art. On its back, the boys returned to the road to electrify increasingly packed venues and festival stages with their fiery brand of punk-tinged rock n roll.
