[DID NOT ATTEND: September 26, 2026] Stinking Lizaveta / Northern Liberties / Alright Junior / Gibbous Moon
For reasons I don’t entirely remember, I’ve added Stinking Lizaveta to the list of bands that I’d like to see. I had no idea they’ve been a band since 1994! And that Steve Albini produced their debut album!
I think what inspired me to check them out is that they are an instrumental band who play complex music. And this is the third or fourth time that I am not seeing them. I really would like to, and this seemed like a fun opportunity, but once again, the timing just didn’t work out.
I really need to make a point of seeing them the next time they play in the area.
I love that there’s a band called Northern Liberties, which is a section of Philadelphia that has a great weird name which I don’t entirely understand. I assumed they were a new band (since they are opening) but they have been around since at least 2001. The band consists of brothers Justin and Marc Duerr on vocals and drums and Kevin Riley on bass and occasional vocals. They play a noisy punk–the bass has a really cool effect on it for most of the albums. They have a cool DIY attitude and sound pretty unique (since there’s no guitar). They sound like late 80’s/early 90s punk, which is pretty cool.
Alright Junior is Jace Miller and Steph Brettman. And while it’s not fair to compare them to The White Stripes, there is certainly a kinship, with some intense fast guitar and vocals from Miller and solid drumming from Brettman. They have also been around the Philly scene for a while (since at least 2014) although I hadn’t heard of them. They don’t seem to release much music, but this show was an EP release show for them. And here’s an apt blurb quote: “Red-blooded alt-rock is alive and well, and Philadelphia’s Alright Junior is a prime example of that….for fans of the genre, it’s pure, uninhibited ear-candy.” – Chad Snyder, WXPN
Gibbous Moon have a great name and an old school metal sound and have also been around for a while (since 2016).
This Philadelphia three-piece has been making heads dizzy with their brand of heavy psychedelic rock mayhem since 2016. Takeyour protein pills and put your helmets on – we’re goin’ for a ride!
Fuzzy, metal guitars, big riffs and lots of echo. Even some cowbell. Was this recorded in a basement in the 1970s? Who knows. Great stuff.
I wish I’d been able to make this show, that’s four great Philly bands.
