[ATTENDED: October 9, 2026] Daði Freyr
Daði Freyr has played Philadelphia 3 times and I’ve seen them all. My wife and I enjoyed him enough last time, that I knew I’d have to grab tickets for this tour as well.
Once again, I felt a little bad for not knowing all of the words to his songs because EVERYBODY else seemed to know every word. But that’s ok, because we were there for the undeniable Eurodance that Daði creates
The previous two times, he had other musicians with him (Ylva Øyen on drums and keys and Pétur Karl on guitars and synth), but this time it was just him. He had two banks of keys. Behind him was a guitar and a bass. Mostly he triggered the songs on his keyboards and he sang along. He played solos on the keys and manipulated the sounds from time to time.
The tech was much more sophisticated this time. There were four panels in the back which were connected by horizontal lights.
The theme of this show was Planet Daði. A planet that exists where everyone is Daði. Then a spaceship landed and out came a Daði. And soon they were interbreeding (hilarious pictures of hands with eyes flying around or looking like giraffes). The screens were filled with videos for each song–mostly Daði in the same white robe that he wore on stage–see it is a cult!–singing along or playing instruments.
And then he came out on stage in that white robe and started singing Somebody Else Now, not even a new song! The crowd was. in the lyrics of P.E.R.F.E.C.T., “Fabulous, Wonderful, Super nice, Magical, Excellent, Fantastic, Such a snack.” They sang and danced and responded to everything Daði did.
He played that song and six other new ones (and everyone knew the words to all of the new songs already). And he mixed in some songs from throughout his career, like the super catchy I’m Fine. I was marveling how short his songs are–you want there to be a third chorus because they’re so catchy, but he is concise (this song is 2 and a half minutes).
He has a new song that is just so perfect, but it will never get airplay because it’s called Flying Fuck
Don’t be worried about your image
No one gives a flying fuckaboutyou
In the past he has played a few Icelandic songs but tonight there was only one–but the crowd went suitably crazy.
Daði told us that he had a cheesesteak and he didn’t like it. But he told us that he walked with his European legs to a place that was connected to a gas station. Daði, NO!
He told us that he wrote Feel It when he was here two years ago when something happened [think catastrophic elections]. It was possibly the most somber song he’s sung. He told us that he writes songs about his wife (many) and about coping (just as many). That song and I’m Not Bitter (what a banger) are coping songs.
But even the coping songs are fun, like Hot Damn which has little asides in it that the crowd was happy to shout out
I kind of had a date with my bed tonight
I’m all tucked in and I’m feeling alright
(Hot damn, didn’t you know
We’re going to a club in Tokyo)
Now you’re telling me everybody’s going out
And wondering what I’m on about
(What are you going on about?)
Last time he ended the encore with Atomic Kitty’s Whole Again. This time it was midset. I didn’t know it last time (and hadn’t heard it since, but the crowd was all over it. (They are a British pop band and the song was written by the guys from O.M.D.).
Daði left the stage and a video played about all of the abilities we would have as a Daði. Silly and delightful, just like him. Then he came back and played 10 Years, his Eurovision hit ad the crowd went nuts. And then went more nuts for his huge banger Moves to Make.
So, all night he had been having fun with Kevin, his tour mate and the guy who thinks he is making the screens do things. But he’s not doing anything. Daði kept saying how handsome Kevin was and then he found out someone backstage was also named Kevin. And when he asked if anyone in the audience was named Kevin, a guy behind us shouted he was. So Daði improvised a hilarious song about wanting all three Kevins in his bed.
Kevin had brought him a phone with the lyrics to Unwritten a song that he has played every night but which he evidently forgets the lyrics for it. I’ve never heard of it or the singer who sings it, Natasha Bedingfield, although everyone seemed to know it, too (it is from 2004).
He had three new songs left in the set. Wildfire had some classic Eurodance moments which were so much fun to hear and the flashing red and orange lights were perfect. One More Night is from the extended version of the album (and is all of 2 minutes 12 seconds). The penultimate song was my favorite from the new album I’m Out and I Wanna Go Home
I’m out and I wanna go home
I get home and I wanna go out
All my friends are staying out late
And I just wanna go to bed,
but I know I don’t need to be anywhere else
‘Cause I’m right where I’m supposed to be
He ended the set with his first Eurovision single, “Think About Things” which led to much dancing and singing along.
After a brief encore break, he came back out and had a sheet of paper. Presumably it was music and lyrics for the song that he tried (a little unsuccessfully) to learn. He said it was surprisingly hard, so he simplified it and sang a song that the crowd went bananas for. I’d never heard of it, but I knew it was silly. After the show I looked it up and found out it’s from a musical that the gang wrote in Its Always Sunny on Philadelphia. There’s a high pitched “ah ah ah” after each line which he asked us to sing. And then he added that refrain to the final song, Thank You.
We had a great time. So much fun, so catchy and Daði seems like such a genuinely nice person. We would have loved to stay and meet him, but we had a great parking space (we arrived early to eat at La Chinesca, but it was closed for a private party, so we ate across the street at Juno, which was delicious) right in front of the venue, so we hopped in the car and got home pretty early. Nice.
See you again in two years, Daði.
