[ATTENDED: January 26, 2024] Pinkshift /Jhariah / Foxteeth
I was really excited for this show. It had been postponed from November (when I didn’t have a ticket) to the New Year.
Originally it was supposed to be at House of Independents, but the reason the first show was postponed was because of flooding. The flooding was so bad that HoI had to close its doors and is now out of business.
So it was moved to Asbury Lanes, which is a great small club.
I arrived with just a few minutes to spare and soon enough Fox Teeth came out. Originally the opening band was Pollyanna, who I really like. I was bummed that they weren’t going to be playing, but Fox Teeth more than exceeded expectations.
Fox Teeth are from New Jersey (they even have a song called Asbury Park–which they did not play). The band is a trio: – Jade Rich – Vocals, guitar and Andrew Romanowski – Drums. They didn’t have a bassist, but an unnamed guy was playing low end guitar–bass lines and low chords to really fill out the sound nicely.
They (or more specifically, Jade) has been making music since 2019, with a few singles and albums out. Their bandcamp page says that the band name is a joke of sorts–a tongue-in-cheek rip on Foxing, one of Rich’s then-favorite bands. They also cite The Front Bottoms and Tigers Jaw as influences. And that’s evident.
Their songs rock with some grungy components and an overall emo-pop-punk vibe.
The set consisted mostly of songs from their latest album Through the Blue. They were catchy and rocking.
I enjoyed Rich’s fancy guitar work on Yellow Houses and the intensity of Romanowski who was definitely throwing in double bass drum action from time to time.
The overall vibe of the set was rocking with some slower moments, although it grew in intensity by the end. Jade has a good voice that veers into some great screaming, like on Promises–in which you could hear her straining her vocal cords. Great stuff.
It was amusing when Jade said her parents were there and she was sorry for cursing so much. Then announcing that they had “Who the fuck is Fox Teeth” shirts for sale.
I think they definitely won over some fans. It also turns out that the bassist from Pollyanna played on the latest Fox Teeth album, so there is definitely a connection between the two bands.
