[ATTENDED: April 29, 2022] Unto Others
Despite having tickets to see Girl Talk, I decided I’d go see this North American Siege of 2022. I’ve been intrigued by Behemoth for quite a while. The are an extreme metal band from Poland who sing of the occult and thelemic ideas. But they are known mainly for their intense live show.
I haven’t really ever been to a show like this and it seemed worth a visit.
I arrived absurdly early. I think doors opened at 6 and I arrived at 6:15 or something. And there was hardly anyone there. The guy at the bar said it sold poorly.
Well, this meant that I was pretty much right up front for most of the night (I moved back as the pit grew more intense through the evening).
Unto Others came out first.
They are a goth-metal band. Thad four giant cross with circle grave marker type sculptures on stage.
They were heavy and Gabriel Franco’s vocals were clean. I was in front of guitarist Sebastian Silva who shredded.
They had a few songs that if I’d heard when I was in high school (and a real metalhead), I would have run out and bought their record immediately.
The most memorable thing for me, though was the woman next to me. She was possibly my age but was acting like a total mom. Yelling too loud, pumping her fist out of time, and of course she was dressed like she just came from work (as was I, but that was a black shirt and shorts at least). In some ways I respected her utter uncoolness. And yet, she was also very very drunk and was shouting a lot at weird times (which I do not like). I tried to get away from her, but it was getting pretty crowded by the end of the set.
Also, a word for bands in the age of Google. Band names like “The The” are pretty impossible to search for, we know that. But you have to see what your band name looks like when it is a website too, because Unto Others comes out as “untoothers” which I can only see as un-toothers.
