[ATTENDED: April 16, 2022] Black Veil Brides
When I grabbed tickets for this tour, I wound up getting them via a Black Veil Brides Presale, because I never got the INK presale to work.
I had never heard of the Black Veil Brides, but that didn’t matter, because I could still get the tickets, right? Even my son and his friend were a little surprised the three bands were together because they said that BVB and Motionless in White peaked like ten years ago.
I also had no idea that this was a triple headline bill. I mean, yes I can see it was advertised as such, but since I hadn’t heard of the other two bands I assumed that the other bands were listed, but it was an INK show.
Then the day before, when I went to check what time INK went on, I saw that the three bands were rotating who went first and that we would not know who was playing first until we got there. Woah, no wonder it was so packed so early.
I had seen that BVB payed third for a number of shows, but then someone commented that they were a West Coast band and they headlined on the west, whereas MIW and INK were East Coast bands and would probably headline out here.
And in deed BVB went on first. I was still on the merch line when they started, so I missed the grand entrance. And by the time I got back to the crowd I was on the periphery, close to the bar–a spot that I hate being in. The girl behind me was REALLY into BVB and was screaming and pogoing with massive intensity. I was sad for her (and for me) that she hadn’t gotten closer.
By the time I finally got settled, and looked at the band, my first thought was “these guys have gotta be from L.A.” Why? Because the drummer was swinging his head around and spinning and throwing sticks and the guitarists were really flashy, doing solos up front and standing back to back while they soloed together. None of it was especially crazy, but it just screamed L.A, meta band to me. And indeed, I found out after that they are from Holly wood. Turns out the rhythm guitarist is named Jinxx!
Musically they were pretty good and seemed to have played songs from throughout their career. There was a lot of “old school fans, this is for you!” and “thanks for sticking with us when people might have given you a hard time for being a BVB fan”).
Turns out they’ve been around since 2006, but put out their first album in 2010. Reading about their earlier albums, I feel like I might have liked them a but more in like 2012, but that could just be the descriptions of the albums. And their new album is described as Rock Opera Concept album which is right up my alley. They certainly didn’t come across like that on stage.
The one positive/negative about this triple headline bill is that each band played for about 50 minutes. Which is not very long. It sucked for the band you wanted to see, but was okay for the bands you didn’t know. So that meant that the BVB set went pretty quickly.
I never really got into it mostly because of where I was. I enjoyed when Jinxx busted out a violin and played a few measures on it before rocking out again.
The band’s bass drum had a very electronic sound to it, which was kind of weird–but it went quite well with the theatrical violin that Jinxx played. But overall their sound wasn’t quite my thing.
