[ATTENDED: March 1, 2022] Gully Boys
I had been hearing rumblings about Gully Boys once Get Better Records signed them. I checked out their songs online and loved them. They have a fantastic angry 90s’ al rock vibe combined with sensational harmonies.
The band has three fantastic singers. And n top of that, they write wonderfully catchy songs.
We arrived in Brooklyn with enough time to get some delicious food at a taco truck. But we decided to wait on line for Dazey merch and that’s when Gully Boys came out. So we could hear them fine, I just couldn’t really focus on them.
They sounded great–Elsewhere’s sound system is top notch.
Gully Boys started as a trio. Drummer Nadirah McGill told us that they started a band and didn’t know how to play anything. They learned together. That was five years ago. I can’t believe they are this good in that short period of time. She sang a lot of backing vocals, but also took lead on “Like Me Now.” It was really fun watching her dreadlocks fly around while she played.
Guitarist Kathy Callahan has an amazing voice. She can do quiet, she can do loud. She can do screaming angry. The band’s cover of Hole’s “Violet” is amazing. It gave me chills
Bassist Natalie Klemond primarily sings backing vocals, but she does have a few lead lines. She has a much cleaner voice than Callahan and it works perfectly together.
They have added Mariah Mercedes on lead guitar and she shreds like nobody’s business. SHe doesn’t play a lot of solos (their songs were written without them), but she has a few moments to just wail which were very satisfying.
After their cover of “Violet” they payed what I think is their best song, “The Way.” Featuring two gigantic hooks–a catchy one and a screamed one. I can’t get it out of my head. And it sounded amazing live.
“Favorite Son” was a song about hating your dad (I’m a dad, but I wasn’t offended by this even if it made everyone cheer). They ended with their first single from their early album “Neopet Graveyard.” This song seemed to elicit quite a reaction–it seemed more so than their other songs. Perhaps they had a small following before they put out their newer EPs.
Turned out they were playing a show the following night in Philly. I wish I could have gone.
But I’ll definitely heck them out next time they’re local.
