[ATTENDED: September 12, 2019] Prism Bitch
I hadn’t heard of Prism Bitch before this tour. I looked them up and listened to their EPs on bandcamp and rather liked them.
They have great lyrics and a catchy punky style, including a song called “Tits Off” which I think they played but I’m not sure. But mostly they have a lot of energy.
Before they went on, we could see their ankles and feet below the screen that was in front of the stage. I was amused that they all seemed to be wearing different colors. And indeed as the screen went up they were revealed to be all wearing matching Adidas tracksuits.
They opened with a fun bouncy song called “You Got I Want.” Lilah Rose [WHITE] played keys and sang most of the lead vocals but midway through, bass player Lauren Poole [YELLOW] also sang lead. And they both chanted the “Yeah…Yeah” parts. But it was really hard to take my eyes off of Lilah Rose because she had so much energy it was insane. She flexed at the keyboards, she kicked super high. At once point she even did a cartwheel.
And she more or less demanded that we get up close to the stage. There was a fence between us and the stage and at one point she climbed down into that area and started giving everyone high fives. She left smiles on everyone’s faces.
During an instrumental break in one song she even did a bunch of pushups (Those track suits aren’t just for show).
I don’t know too many of the song titles, but a few I figured out from the EP titles, “See You Cry.” I know they also played “Ya Ya” because it was a lot of fun to hear them all singing “Ya Ya.”
I’m not sure why guitarist Tris Walsh [GREEN] was standing so far away from everyone else, but he played some excellent leads. Behind Poole was other guitarist Nelson Crane [BLACK]. He played some great guitar work and added some essential screams on the fantastic “Treehouse.”
I was really blown away by drummer Teresa Esguerra [RED]. I really couldn’t get a good picture of her from where I was, but she was really impressive–hitting super hard and playing some rather complex fills. She was great.
About half way through the show, Lilah Rose got rid of the keyboard (“get rid of this lame thing”) and picked up a guitar. A few times she mimed playing a solo, but mostly she was adding some loud power chords. The guitar also freed her up to be even more mobile.
She jumped around, leaned over the stage to us as she sang and eventually flung herself on to the stage to play from on her back.
It was pretty fun. Prism Bitch is from New Mexico and they made some jokes about the weather differences between here and there. Lilah Rose also said she expected Jersey to be louder [so someone shouted a Fuhgeddaboutit for her].
By the end of their set everyone had moved up close and they had really won over the crowd.
It was also fun to see them get called back up to sing the encore with Built to Spill a little later.
I’m assuming that a bunch of songs that they played are unreleased at this point, so I’m guessing at the setlist from waht I can remember and piece together from the EPs.
