[ATTENDED: June 18, 2018] Amyl and the Sniffers
I had never heard of Melbourne’s Amyl and the Sniffers before this show.
From their name, it’s pretty obvious what the band is all about. They’re a four-piece, bass, guitar, drums and Amyl up front. They play short, fast, loud rockers. On their bandcamp site they have released ten songs totalling about twenty minutes.
And they were pretty fun.
This song shows their garage rock sensibility.
Amyl is an enjoyable frontwoman. I think we were taken more with her thick Melbourne accent than any words she may have been saying.
They blasted through a bunch of songs including a few that were sing-alongs.
At one point Amyl opened a bottle of champagne and drank from it and by the end of the set she had sprayed it over the front of the crowd.
It’s a shame the lyrics weren’t clearer in the show because they’re pretty good.
“People look at me like I’m a hooker, but I just want to be a venue booker, I’m not a loser.”
Since I like looking up info about bands, I found this interview with Australia’s Beat.
Amy Taylor laughs … “I suppose it’s just what interests me and influences me,” she says. “Growing up around my parents, who grew up in the western suburbs of Sydney, that’s what I’ve been around – muscle cars, shit punk music, that kind of stuff.”
When the tape rolled in the band’s first recording session, there wasn’t much of a strategic plan to shape Amyl and Sniffers’ sound. “We all have our different influences, Callum and Brian were more influenced by the garage-y sounds of Melbourne,” Taylor says. “But Declan our guitarist was more influenced by ‘70s Aussie pub rock, like Rose Tattoo and AC/DC. I’m between both of them, with a bit of Nancy Sinatra in there as well.”
