[ATTENDED: April 24, 2018] Double Ferrari
I first heard about Double Ferrari when NPR covered them for their SXSW special.
They were described as “a thrillingly over-the-top throwback to a time when guitar virtuosos noodled their way to arena-sized stardom, Double Ferrari crafts giddily triumphant odes to giddy triumph.” And why would you only have one Ferrari when you could have a Double Ferrari?
The song on the show was an instrumental based around guitar riffs. That’s what they do. I felt like they took the best solos from classic British heavy metal and built songs around them–with two guitars playing the parts in delicious over the top harmony. And of course I love that the band Double Ferrari has a song called “Double Ferrari ” from the album Double Ferrari.
When I bought ticket a to see Bit Brigade month ago I didn’t know who Double Fear was. So when I looked at the bill recently and saw that this awesome shredding band was opening for Bit Brigade I was super psyched.
I did not arrive in time to see Cheap Dinosaurs a local band who sound pretty good according to this video).
But I did arrive in time to hear Double Ferrari guitarist Jace Bartet introduce the band and tell a long hilarious story about getting injured on the way to the show and having to drive through the Philly pot holes to get a to a doctor. There was some confusion about a mayor and a doctor. Ultimately the doctor put an ointment on his hand but the only way it would work is if he got ten high fives. Which he immediately received.
And then they were off. Playing anthemic anthems.
And it was awesome. I’m not sure who was playing which part of the riff. Was Bartet or Bryant Williamson playing the high notes? I have no idea. They seemed to switch off, but it didn’t matter because it all sounded great.
Although the songs are ostensibly about the riffs, the rhythm section was really incredible.
I found out later (from Fields himself) that he is playing a a six string bass.
I loved how much fun Fields and drummer Ryan Houchens were having together. Like this moment when Field bit down on one of the cymbals.
Jace told us that they were on the 14th day of their first ever tour. And yet they seemed so polished. And I though their sound worked perfectly with what I’d heard of Bit Brigade.

And then Jace said, for those of you who don’t know, you’ll see us again soon since we are also Bit Brigade. My mind was blown into tiny pieces.
They are indeed the same band. [They are NOT Cheap Dinosaurs, however].
The only difference is that they have a different drummer. But what fun this drummer has.
So Double Ferrari were as much fun as you would expect a band with that name to be. The only question is how does a band have so many riffs?
I didn’t know their record then, so I don;t know what they played, but I believe it was everything from the album. And it was totally awesome.
