[ATTENDED: November 7, 2016] Marge
Two bands opened for Toronto’s Dilly Dally. The posted start time was 8:30, but I gather Marge went on at 8:15. Traffic made me a few minutes late, so I really only saw one song from Marge.
And it was really good. It started off with the guitarist on the right joking about her Lake Wobegone Shirt. And then she started playing and singing. The song (no idea what it was called) began slow and fuzzy shoe-gazey. It stayed that way for a few minutes and then the singer started pogoing a bit and then the song started rocking with some good screams from the lead singer. Just as I started to get a quick video for reference, the song ended and so did their set.
I have checked out their bandcamp site and I love that their slogan and first single name is “we’re figuring it out” because it really sounded like they were. But between that 2013 release and their new album Bruise Easy from 2016, Marge made huge strides and their sound is really dynamic and interesting. I wish I had seen more of their set.
But that’s all I can say about Marge, so I’ll use this space to mention the Boot & Saddle, which I’d never been to before. What a cool bar/club this is. The bar is in front, the club in back. It is about as wide as a garage and made three cars deep. It holds a max of 150 people. When the set ends, the bands walk down off the small stage and into the audience. In this show, the band’s gear was lining the walls, so they had to walk over to them to pack up or set up–I nearly bumped into a drum set.
And the sound, despite the shape of the venue was really good too (at least for a bunch of noisy bands).
Sadly, Marge’s set had no more than 2 dozen people in the audience, which I felt bad about. However, at the same time just a few miles away, there was a free rally for Hillary Clinton in which Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi made appearances. So while the crowds might not necessarily overlap, there were some 40,000 people there.
This was the night before I found out that our country is half full of ignorant people who believe that a lying, racist, misogynist, financially ignorant totalitarian buffoon should be in charge of our country. Please let there be boxes of uncounted ballots discovered sometime this week. [That’s stages 2 and 3, by the way, anger and bargaining].
