[ATTENDED: September 15, 2025] Mary in the Junkyard

Mary in the Junkyard is a trio from London. The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Clari Freeman-Taylor, viola and bass player Saya Barbaglia and drummer David Addison.

I had never heard of them and they have an EP and some singles out, so they are pretty new.

I listened to the singles today and rather liked them.  But they really didn’t come across very well at Franklin Music Hall.  It felt like everything was wrong to me.  The drums were really loud.  The guitars were sometimes loud, but Clari’s vocals were always quiet–very hard to hear.

I had pretty high hopes for their set because the songs had really interesting components–guitar lines or when Saya switched from bass to viola and added some really weird sounds to the songs.  But None of the songs had any hooks.  Which is weird because they’re there on the album.

I suspect that seeing them in a smaller venue (FMH is quite cavernous) would suit their sound much better.  I’d be interested in seeing them again, but in a small club.

At least the crowd reacted positively to them–and there was a lot to like–they just never won me over (and I love finding great opening bands).

I’m assuming this is the setlist.  It’s what they’d played at most of their shows

  1. Drains §
  2. Blood
  3. Midori
  4. Goop
  5. New Muscles
  6. Web
  7. Tuesday  ¾
  8. This is my California ¼

§ single (2025)
¼ single (2024)
¾ single (2023)

[ATTENDED: December 13, 2024] Karina Rykman

Last year, my wife and I saw Karina Rykman twice.  First as an opening act and then for our final show of 2023, as a headliner.

The show was great–loud and dancing and fun and everything you’d want in a jamband adjacent musician who totally kicks ass.

When she announced another Philly show this year (my second to last show of the year, but my wife’s final show of the year once again), I snatched up tickets immediately.

Karina is such a joy to see live.  Her band rocks and her choice of songs (both her own and covers) are designed for maximum fun (and chops).  And of course, she has a perpetual smile on her face–no one enjoys playing music as much as she does. (more…)

[ATTENDED: March 12, 2022] Wet Leg

Wet Leg became a huge sensation on the basis of one song.

“Chaise Longue” was suddenly everywhere.  And it’s a weird, catchy, funny song with lots of talking a lot of repetition.  It hit all of my buttons and I was immediately a fan.

But it was so strange that the band had just this one song out–nothing else online or anywhere.  NPR Music introduced me to the song in July 2021.  They had a second single “Wet Dream” out in September.  And that was that–two songs and an album promised in 2022.

And they announced a tour of the States in November.  Somehow I missed the announcement because I would have totally gotten tickets at PhilMOCA.  And it sold out pretty quickly.  Then at some point it was announced that it was moved to Underground Arts and more tickets were available.  I grabbed one immediately and it soon sold out at UA as well.

I thought the show would be fun, but I also thought that the band was a kind of left-field, one hit wonder who it would be fun to see because they’d probably never come back.  Heck, they seemed like they might just make the one album and be done.

So my expectations weren’t super high, but I assumed I’d have a good time. (more…)

[ATTENDED: March 12, 2022] Lowertown

I had a great plan for this evening  I would drive into Philly early–this show was at 6:30!  I’d stop in at Federal Donuts for treats for the family.

Then I would park near Underground Arts on the street.  I would see Lowertown and Wet Leg, then I would hop in my car and drive to Union Transfer–just a few blocks away, and see Daughter of Swords and The Tallest Man on Earth–a double header!

And then it snowed.

I wasn’t even sure if I could make it.  But it stopped snowing with enough time for me to get to the venue and do my plan without the donuts.  But when I got to Underground Arts, it was packed.  There was a huge line out the door and nowhere to park! (more…)
