The tour was announced in March and then in April Laura told us that she was moving the Philly show up to November. I had assumed all of the shows were moved, but it was only the Philly show. And, looking at the dates below, why did they schedule Philly at that original date anyhow? Weird.

Laura Ramoso is a comedian that my wife knew from Instagram who never came across my radar. And, to make this point even funnier, when Laura came out on stage she welcomed everyone, including the husbands and boyfriends who had no idea who she was.

When My wife told me about her, she sounded funny, but I decided to go in blind, so I didn’t watch any clips of her stuff and that was an interesting way to experience a comedian. It means that there were catch phrases and thing that made the crowd laugh and I didn’t know why. And that’s fine too, because most of the rest of these how did make me laugh a lot.

I assume I am correct in saying that she is most known for portraying her parents. Laura is half German, half Italian. Her German mother is very stuff and formal and her Italian father is very emotional and is often cooking. Laura’s accents and characterizations are great and she moves between the two with amazing ease.

She opened the show with the parents’ discussing that her mother is pregnant with Laura. (This item of news was third in a series of pieces of information, followed by that she was going to make a Caesar salad in a minute). The parents’ reaction to the new and their plans for nurturing their new baby were really funny.

But her skits–for they are skits, a cut to black at the end of each skit signals the end–are no only about her parents.

She had one skit about a woman who has just gotten proposed to and the “totally chill” 4 weekend-long party she is planning. It was followed by a woman getting hit on in a bar. She is unimpressed by him until he starts listing all of her flaws (Laura is 6’1″ and has size 11 shoes). Turns out he can read anyone in a room like the woman in the front row who works in [this improv piece was very funny as she guessed a series of job, ultimately having to give in and ask what the woman did–she works in radio “I’ve never had radio before!”]

One of the funniest skits was a super short one about Laura’s impression of what it’s like to be a short woman.

Another was a series of receptionists at hotels around the world and how they react to the same information.

She also did a really funny, rather long bit with an audience member. I had no idea she’d have audience participation, but for the first one, she had a strong man from the audience open a bottle of wone for her and the scene spiraled out into a wedding (with Laura giving the finger to the man’s actual wife in the front row) and even a a new baby. The guy brought on stage was great–enjoyed playing along and was very funny, too.

Another of her characters is an Italian airline attendant. The premise is that she is abrupt and rude. This called for another audience member who was led through a number of physical jokes and she showed him how to get from one part of the airport to another. He was later (good naturedly) mocked for not knowing how escalators worked.

More audience participation came when Laura’s mother and father had phone calls with their best friends. Laura’s mother’s best friend was a woman in the audience named Alice who did not help with the improv when she reminded Laura’s mother that they met at a gas station (Laura even joked that she had to go along with whatever anyone said). Laura’s father was best friends with a guy named Dave who I think spoke Italian and went too far in the other direction when he said they like to play bocce. The strangers offered her parents advice on what to do about 17 year old Laura. Laura portraying her 17 year old self was just as funny as the rest of the skit.

The show ended with advice from her German mother and her Canadian mother-in-law. She did these one after another with her own mother saying things like. Ride a Bike, Run a Marathon. And her Canadian mother-in-law saying things like Once a day find pleasure in your body, and Go out into the woods, eat mushroom and make love to your partner under the open sky [in those exact words]. The joke from her Canadian mother-in-law about breastfeeding was so funny I will never forget it. TL:DR: [she doesn’t red meat, only chicken an fish because she doesn’t eat anything that breastfeeds]

Her show was really funny and with no opening act, we were done by 9:15, which was quite delightful.

But on the way home we made a Wawa stop only to learn that both onramps to 95 were closed so we had to take an oddly circuitous route home so we didn’t get home as early as I hoped. But that’s okay.
