I Just Read About That…

[DID NOT ATTEND: August 21, 2026] Kiwi Jr. [FREE AT NOON]

I was supposed to see Kiwi Jr. open for Nap Eyes back in 2022, but the show was cancelled.  Back then I thought:

Kiwi Jr. is a fun Canadian band, recently described as “clever, easy-going jangle pop” that I’d really like to see live.

For some reason I thought I thought they were a more punk pop, but they’re really not.  And I think when I listened to them this time I was a little disappointed they weren’t more punky.  But really they’re cool–synthy and more than a little fun.

I grabbed a ticket for this Free at Noon because I knew I couldn’t make their show that night at Johnny Brenda’s.  But sometimes just thinking about a Free at Noon is exhausting.  I woke up tired and just didn’t have the wherewithal to go to work and then do the show.  Which is a bummer because the show sounded great (as you can hear below). 

Here’s what WXPN said about the show

Kicking off their set was “Salary Man” from 2020’s Football Money, which they followed up with “Hard Drive, Ontario” off the new record. The latter featured some killer guitar harmonies from frontman Jeremy Gaudet and guitarist/keyboardist Brian Murphy on top of drummer Brohan Moore’s thumping floor tom and bassist Mike Walker’s low end groove.

Blowin’ Up‘s lead track, “Photos Of The Reenactment” came next, then along came “World Like Polly,” which saw Murphy jump from guitar to keys to lay down some synth lines for the song.

They followed “Polly” up with “Pure Michigan,” then played “The Sound of Music” and “Night Vision,” both from 2022’s Chopper.

Kiwi Jr. threw it back to 2021 and performed the title track from Cooler Returns before closing their Free At Noon with the title track from Blowin’ Up, a fitting end for the show as the band is rightfully earning more attention for their studio cuts and very fun live shows.
