[ATTENDED: September 20, 2023] Otto von Schirach
I bought tickets to this show back in December–I was really really looking forward to seeing Igorrr after reading about his live shows. I thought that I had missed him a few years back, but I don’t really see any evidence of him having played Philly since like 2018.
But I wasn’t missing this show. I was pretty delighted to see that Melt-Banana were opening, but I didn’t know anything about Otto von Schirach.
So who is he?
Bermuda Triangle born Otto Von Schirach is one of a kind human/alien, His magical presence & energy makes you overwhelming happy. This Miami Native puts out many different types of epic Electronic music and always has new life and sounds to share, hence he is always touring around the earth. His Shows are more of a sonic ear cleanse, aura cleanse and will magnify your pineal gland! You will be extremely happy after his live performance.
Otto is really really into triangles. He wears a headband with a triangle hanging off of it. Unless I am mistaken, he has two songs about triangles (one of which “Triangle Pit” has these lyrics:
Triangle!
Triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles
Triangle!
Triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles
Triangle!
Triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles
Triangle!
Triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, triangles, trianglesTriangle!
Triangle! (What? Yeah!)
Triangle! (Woo! Yeah!)
Triangle! (Woo! Yeah! Woo!)
In another song “Pterodactyl” he encouraged us all to do a pterodactyl dance. The song begins with the lyric “I am a raging psycho” and the talks about how I guess he has pterodactyl blood in his veins. “Pterodactyl Rawr!”
He was wearing gold lame pants and a big triangle vest and his teeth were silver. He stomped around the stage doing karate kicks and punches in time to the beat. He used his right hand as if it were holding a puppet (there was no puppet, he just opened and closed his hand like a puppet’s mouth) to sing along to some of the lyrics. And, honestly, most of the lyrics were just him screaming–just out and out screaming. The music was frenetic and fast and driven by drums and sound effects and the screaming fit in perfectly into the chaos.
But it was so clear that he was having a great time up there. And his great time was quite infectious. It puzzling and weird and abrasive, but he was so joyful that after like two songs, the whole room were fans.
The song “Goat” (I think) had these lyrics: “Goat / goat / goat/ goat/ goat/ goat/ goat/ goat/ goat/ goat/ goat/ goat.” With every few beats punctuated by a goat’s bleat.
The final song “Draculo” was about Dracula and had samples from some kind of movie or other. And “When Dinosaurs Rule the Earth” had other fun samples.
Clearly, the vibe is fun. And yea, it was a lot of fun. I was hugely surprised that his set was 40 minutes. Honestly, 25 minutes would have been plenty but the last fifteen minutes were probably the most fun.
He was an interesting character and is totally worth arriving early for.
