[ATTENDED: May 5, 2023] Frost Children
Yves Tumor had been on my list of artists I wanted to see live. So when they announced a show at Franklin Music Hall, I grabbed a ticket pretty quickly. I didn’t think it would sell out. In fact I thought that Franklin Music Hall would be too big a venue for them. I mean, had anyone even heard about them?
I hadn’t heard of either opening band. But when I looked up Frost Children, I was intrigued. Frost Children are siblings Angel and Lulu Prost from St. Louis, now living in New York City.
I listened to their album on Spotify and liked it enough. Hyperpop with sound effects and glitches and interesting pitch-shifted vocals. There’s was lots of cursing and aggression, but it was all really catchy. Going back through their catalog, it’s clear that in the last three years since their debut, they have gotten much more inventive with their creations. There’s not a lot of depth to the lyrics, but who cares when a chorus like
Like oh my god
what the fuck
who are you?
is so damned catchy and singalong able.
So, when the lights went down and Frost Children came out, Angel and Lulu were accompanied by a drummer (who was named, but I didn’t catch it). The lights started flashing, and the twins split to different sides of the stage. One played a small set of tom toms, one played bass (sometimes) and they both played synths.
The live set was so much more intense and rocking than the album (which is probably more suited to radio play). The siblings (dressed similarly and looking a lot alike (in the dark lights) were like avatars on stage dancing and singing/screaming and getting everyone on the floor moving.
It was overwhelming and exhausting. So much so, that when it ended, I was shocked to see that they’d only played for 20 minutes.
My guess is that they played partial songs for most of their because it sure felt like there were more choruses than 20 minutes would allow.
I know they played “COUP.” But who knows what else beyond that. It was deliriously fun.
