[ATTENDED: August 24, 2022] Shannen Moser
It’s funny how some artists wind up as opening acts quite often. Shannen Moser has been listed as an opening act for several band that I was interested in seeing. She’s also been on two Champagne Jams from The Front Bottoms. This is only my second time seeing her though and I’m not sure when she was announced as the opener for Kathleen Edwards, because I didn’t find out until a couple of days beforehand.
Shannen is from Berks County, PA. She plays a simple kind of open-tuned guitar (such that a capo is all you need to make a chord sound good). Some of her songs have a finger-picking section as well.
Her lyrics are personal and often pointed.
She received a nice round of applause for saying that she played with Bernie Sanders a few days earlier at his Rally with Bernie Sanders in Philadelphia to fight back against corporate greed.
This was my first time to Haddon Heights and the free Summer Concert series. And I have to say that it was pretty wonderful. The grounds are lovely, with permanent seating. The drive wasn’t all that long. And parking wasn’t exactly a challenge, once I figured out all the street parking was free.
There was a nice stage set up and the sound was really good too. There was even a hot dog/pretzel vendor. I’ve noticed that they have some really big artists come to this and I will definitely be coming back for future shows.
Shannen said she had a new album coming out next month and she played a few songs from it. There’s no setlist online, but if I can figure out some song titles I’ll post them.
Her voice is powerful and strong and her guitar playing is really good. I feel like she has gotten better since last time I saw her–like her earlier songs were simpler and she has added complexities to them now.
The one problem for me was that she was really loud. I’m guessing the speakers were set up for Kathleen, who sings more quietly, because at times it feel a little ear-piercing. But she was really good and I’m glad to have seen her again.
