[ATTENDED: July 13, 2022] Greet Death
After the wildness of Home is Where, I wasn’t really sure what to expect from Greet Death. I assumed they had gotten their name from Explosions In the Sky who have a song called that. Which meant that they would probably be instrumental post-rock.
But they aren’t.
They are a four-piece from Detroit with two lead singers. When I saw them I was in front of Samuel Boyhtari who has a more pleasant singing style. On the other side of the stage was Logan Gaval who is more of the mouthpiece of the band, I’m guessing.
Gaval sang “You’re Gonna Hate What You’ve Done” and I didn’t like his voice quite as much, but I couldn’t say why exactly. I also felt bad for him during this song because at least where I was standing, Boyhtari’s guitar was so loud that you couldn’t hear anything that Gaval was doing on his side of the stage (and he was doing quite a lot).
The rest of the songs Boyhtari sang–and it always seemed to work better when his guitar wasn’t too loud.
Although Jackie Kalmink and Jimmy Versluis–bass and drums–held everything together just fine.
They were quite a different vibe from Home is Where. It also felt like the crowd really didn’t respect them all that much. There was a lot of talking during the quieter moments of their songs. In fact there were two girls in front of me that talked non stop and I had to move away from them because their talked at outside conversation levels.
Kids today.
