[ATTENDED: May 18, 2022] Beach Bunny
T. was really into Beach Bunny when we saw her back in November of 2021. I was pretty surprised that she was going to tour again in May of 2022 (in fairness, the 2021 tour had been rescheduled twice and I think she was ready to play new stuff, but she had all the gear from the old tour so….). Plus, this new tour moved her from the 1500 capacity Union Transfer to the 2500 capacity Fillmore.
I had really enjoyed her at Union Transfer and was looking forward to what she’s do at this show.
Last time the stage was filled with old video game cabinets. This time it had old small TV screens.
Lili Trifilio came out with bunny ears on and jumped right in with “Oxygen.” The crowd seemed very young to me (which, I guess to me they were very young, but I believe the Fillmore was designed for a largely under 21 crowd).
My daughter seemed a little overwhelmed by the crowd and the show and decided to hang nearer to the back. She felt like she could see better, which may have been true). But i always feel disconnected from the show when I’m too far back.
Beach Bunny interacted a lot with the folks up front and there was a good deal of singing along. And a lot of screaming. There was even a good moment pretty early on where everyone was supposed to squat down and then leap up as the song took off (good fun for those whose knees work).
The real problem once you start getting too far back is that people tend to talk a lot during and over the music (this happens everywhere, I know, but it seems worse near the back). But my daughter seemed to be overheating a bit and was happy to be near the back where there was a place to sit.
Here not feeling well obviously clouded the show for me a bit, but I still enjoyed it.
Beach Bunny puts on a great show. Lots of lights and spectacle. A mirror ball during “rearview” and judicious use of static on the old TVs a fun stage prop.
The tour was for the new album, but Beach Bunny knows her audience and only played five songs from the new album, making sure to pack the eighteen songs with big sing along hits.
The big surprise for me was that she didn’t play an encore.
Last time, she played eighteen songs and did two encores. This time, there were eighteen songs and no encores. iI wonder what led to that decision.
It actually worked out better for me because my son was at the Deftones show across town and it ended at roughly the same time that our show did. So no beach Bunny encore meant that he wouldn’t have to wait by himself in a strange part of town while we hoofed it over there.
All in all it was an exhausting but exciting night for everyone. And while I would have preferred to see the Deftones show (I’ve only seen them once and it has been many years), I had a lot of fun at Beach Bunny with my daughter. And when she wears the sweatshirt, I know she had a better time that it seemed like she was having.
