[ATTENDED: May 18, 2022] Ky Vöss [Wednesday cancelled]
T. was really into Beach Bunny when we saw her back in November of 2021. I was pretty surprised that she was going to tour again in May of 2022 (in fairness, the 2021 tour had been rescheduled twice and I think she was ready to play new stuff, but she had all the gear from the old tour so….). Plus, this new tour moved her from the 1500 capacity Union Transfer to the 2500 capacity Fillmore.
Of course I got her a ticket!
It also happened to be the same night as my rescheduled (three or four times) Deftones show which I was incredibly excited to go to. Which my son really wanted to go to having recently gotten into the Deftones.
I tried so many different ways to make this night happen for all of us.
Perhaps I could get a ticket for him for Deftones and we could go together. Mine was GA, but GA was upselling for like $300 (NO!). I could get him a seat in the balcony–that would suck) and even that was upselling for like $175 (NO!).
And what would I do with my daughter who couldn’t go by herself. A friend could go with her. But I couldn’t leave two young teens at the Fillmore alone while I went to Deftones across town. My wife could go with them to Beach Bunny and I could go to Deftones! Oh but then my wife had a work thing that night. And the friend couldn’tgo anyway.
So, I did the crazy thing of driving my son to the Met Philly for Deftones and giving him my ticket (that show started at 7). We then drove across town to the Fillmore for our show which started at 8. Each show was three bands. But I know that Deftones play longer than Beach Bunny so it should be fine.
But then one of the opening bands for Deftones couldn’t make it. Oh damn. Their start times were then rejiggered and it was all up in the air.
But he was cool and got on the merch line as my daughter and I went to Beach Bunny trying to figure out what would happen if he ended long before us. Would I drive over to get him and wait out front for her?
Then we got to the Fillmore and learned that Wednesday, the middle band, wasn’t playing our show either. Turns out their previous show on the tour was in Baltimore and the next show is in the Carolinas (which is where Wednesday is from). So they went home instead of driving north. This sucked a bit because I rather wanted to see them (and had no idea who Ky Vöss was), but it sure made my plans a lot easier. Now both shows would end around the same time!
So, with a mild stress level, we bought some merch and moved up into the middle of the floor for Ky Vöss, whose website describes her as:
“Ky Vöss is an NYC-based American producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. By use of stark contrasting lyrics, striking visuals, and synthesized melodies Vöss walks the line between otherworldly and deeply human in a playful concoction of carbonated synth-pop and nostalgic soundscapes.”
She had a human drummer on her right and a human guitar player on her left. She took care of pretty much everything else. Synth sounds and beats and vocals.
It was enjoyable poppy music. Ky Vöss was an engaging performer–adorable and funny. There were dark, gothy elements to her look and sound which somehow seemed all the more adorable on her. Here’s an interesteing tidbit I found from 2020:
“Ky Vöss was initially the name of a character/persona I created a few years back. I was initially just seeking some variety of mask to hide behind musically and artistically. Somewhere along the line, I discovered that playing the part of “Ky Vöss” full time in my day to day life was incredibly empowering. It was in the midst of a wildly difficult time. Existing as a ghost-like character in my brain was so much easier than continuing on as a human.”
Her newer songs are definitely more fully realized than her 2020 music. So its clear she is developing as an artist.
