[ATTENDED: March 6, 2022] Midwife
I was intrigued by the setup on the stage. On the microphone stand there was a old-school telephone receiver.
Then Madeline Johnston came onstage with her guitar. She spoke into the telephone and her voice sounded distant and far away. It was pretty neat.
She then triggered a drum beat and started playing guitar over it. She sang into it and her voice was spooky and sounded like it was coming from outer space.
Midwife plays was she calls Heaven Metal and falls into the “Slowcore” and “Sadcore” genre.
The songs are slow and moody with lots of echo and distortion. She played five songs over the course of 30 minutes. I was intrigued at the beginning but found myself a little bored by the end. I don’t really care for really slow music. But she had a pretty huge fan base (including the bands above her on the bill).
But everything about her was fascinating. She had large headphones on–clearly listening to he guitar as she was tuning it and so forth. But she left them on during the song and even after the song–could she even hear the applause?
The last few songs had looped guitar parts. She played the loop while she tuned her guitar (either her guitar went out of tune very easily or she had unusual tunings for her songs as she tuned for quite a while).
I enjoyed the last song which featured some interesting guitar solo work, but really the pacing was a little too slow for me.
