[ATTENDED: February 12, 2022] Su Lee
If you’re a fairly unknown Japanese band coming to America for the first time (some cities anyway), who do you invite for an opener?
Well, apparently, you pick Su Lee, a Korean singer who had a burst of success on Reddit with her song “I’ll Just Dance” (subtitled: ‘what my mental breakdown sounds like’). That was in May 2020. The viral success apparently allowed her to continue as a musician.
Lee was very funny and very very nervous. This was her first ever tour and we were he fourth or fifth show.
She came out on stage, and shouted at us. “This thing isn’t working!” The ear piece–a technology she had never used before wasn’t doing what it was supposed to do. She muttered and cursed a bunch and eventually it started working.
Then she sang her first song, “Coward.” And what a voice! It was pure and clean and powerful. She looped herself and added some backing vocals to make a nice full sound.
Lee bares her soul and all of her insecurities in her songs and on stage. She is an absolutely lovable nervous wreck. “When I get nervous I talk about poop.” She said. She had just shoved a tissue in her nose because she apparently “snots” a lot too.
She chatted a bunch between songs, muttering and seeming very lost (was this all an act? If so, it was a good one). Her accent was nonexistent–I assumed that she was born here. She had a lot of the mannerisms of a TikToker as well (she called herself “cringe” at one point).
After a great song about Social Media )”All the Noise”) she did two covers. The first was Chance the Rapper’s “Cocoa Butter Kisses” (“with all of the epic removed”). I didn’t know the original but her version was lovely. Her voice sounded terrific and she did the fast rapping part in the verses easily.
She followed that with “Take on Me” once again with the epic parts removed. And the song sounded so very different–like a pretty ballad. And I actually understood the words for the first time.
She followed this with a few more songs, including her new single (“please please please please stream it!”) “Dancing in the Wild.” She followed it “I’ll Just Dance” after giving the history outlined above. She ended the set with “Thank You Song,”
