[ATTENDED: November 2, 2021] Beabadoobee
Beabadoobee had a couple of hits that I really liked. Her song “Care” was a perfect 90s reclamation–so fun and catchy.
When she announced a tour I figured it would be fn to see her. I had no idea how popular she actually was. The crowd was intense and surprisingly devoted.
She releases music in a way that’s hard for an old like me to comprehend–just random singles whenever she feels like it. So even though she was touring for her album Fake It Flowers, she had since released an new EP and maybe even another single.
So I can’t keep up with that but everyone else sure did.
Her band was great–her guitarist totally rocked in a way I never expected at a Beabadoobie concert.
I was surprised she played “Care” so early in the set, but the crowd loved it and sang every word. The band’s performance sounded great too–from the lead guitar to the backing vocals.
Bea herself didn’t say a lot. In fact, I was kind of surprised at how subdued she was. I recently learned that this was only her second show in America, so maybe that has something to do with it? It wasn’t until “He Gets Me So High” that it seemed like she was actually having fun (a lot of fun). Or maybe she is allowed to have more fun when she’s not also playing guitar.
I really enjoyed the slightly off guitar melody of the quieter “Sorry.” But my favorite song that I didn’t know before was “She Plays Bass” and her bassist was pretty great, too.
What was fun about he playing “Care” so early is that I forgot about “Last Day on Earth,” the other super catchy song I’d heard on the radio a lot. We all happily sang along to the insanely catchy
Shoop-doo-doo, shoop-doo, badoobadoo
Shoop-doo, shoop-doo-badoo, oh yeah
Shoop-doo, shoop-doo, badoobadoo
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
That seemed like a show ender to me, but she came back with two encores.
She played the “first song she ever wrote” (way back in 2017) called “Coffee” (which has since gotten a remix that I don’t really like). She started playing it on an acoustic guitar but after a verse she admitted it was out of tune and had to stop. While the tech returned it, she confessed that she didn’t like coffee “I’m British what do you expect.” It was the most fun and lively she’d been.
They ended with “Cologne” which was one last chance for her guitarist to place some wicked sounds and solos. It seemed like he was playing on a different song, but all of his sounds worked perfectly. The song ended in a noisy jam based on a rocking riff with flashing lights and squalls of feedback, it was a terrific and quite unexpected ending.
Earlier that day I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go, I worried it might be kind of bland. But she put on an amazing show.
