[ATTENDED: April 15, 2019] Gurr
Gurr is a duo from Berlin. I had not heard of them before this show and they were absolutely awesome.
They describe their music as “first wave gurrrlcore,” and the combination of pink dress and velvet bodysuit with leather jackets sums up their sound really well.
The duo (Laura Lee in red and Andreya in pink) were full of fun, energy, and maybe a little drink. [They raved about a local pub that had a picture of Obama on the wall which they really liked and how the owner kept giving them drinks].
They had a great garage/grunge sound with Andreya singing lead and Laura Lee wailing on guitar. They had a backing bassist and drummer but I don’t remember their names…sorry guys.
They sang mostly in English, but a couple of songs were in German too. Like the opener “Walnuss” (“Walnuts“).
Andreya had a great front woman presence. She sang powerfully. But when she put her guitar down, she totally cut loose. She danced around the stage, doing high kicks and pogoing, like in “Diamonds.” She threatened to jump into the crowd at the end of “Diamonds” and eventually did wind up amid the crowd dancing and singing.
They even had a lot of fun introducing their ripping song “Rollerskate” with a verse from “Hollaback Girl.”
Most of their songs were from their debut album In My Head. But that album is from 2016! It’s time to get some new songs out there. They have a new EP called She Says which features the song “Bye Bye,” which they played.
The new EP also contains the song “Zu Spät” which has a great catchy riff and which was sung in German which I thought was pretty cool.
These new songs are a but slower, but their harmonies are even better.
Andreya played guitar again for “#1985.”
They ended with the awesomely rocking “Klartraum.” Laura Lee had been having some trouble with her guitar cables earlier in the show and then during this last song , during the dramatic pause, it cut out on her again. They way they dealt with the “crisis” was hilarious, endearing and totally rocking.
They were so much fun I wanted to follow them to their next show to see them again. At one point Laura Lee lay on the floor and was playing from a prone position. Sadly the guy ‘s big head in front of me blocked all but her velvet pants and the neck of her guitar. When Andreya came out into the crowd she danced and sang and had a great old time with us.
I hope that this first US tour gained them enough popularity to come back again. They are a great live band.
