[ATTENDED: December 6, 2018] Mountain Movers
I was pretty excited to see Heron Oblivion, although I had never heard of either of the two opening bands.
Turns out all three bands on the bill were awesome. Mountain Movers absolutely blew me way with their excellent psychedelic stoner rock. (I believe the term is now psychrock). The soloing was outstanding.
Mountain Movers are from New Haven, CT and are the brain child of guitarist Dan Greene. After four albums sometime in 2011 or so, they were joined by lead guitarist Kryssi Battalene and drummer Ross Menze to form the cohesive unit that I saw. And they were amazing.
I was standing right in front of Battalene, so I really got to enjoy her simple but striking soloing.
For most of the songs, Menze and bassist Rick Omonte would lay down these gorgeous rhythms–rumbling and insistent while Battalene and sometimes Greene would play these wonderfully psychedelic solos.
In this song, I loved the high bass notes and simple but effective drumming that lay the ground work for both guitars.
Even if this is Greene’s band, I couldn’t stop watching Battalene’s guitar playing (her sweater was really cute, too). And I worried that her hair would get caught in the strings, but, nope, no issues there.
I’m writing this a few weeks after the show and I honestly didn’t remember there being words to any of the songs. I’m sure Greene sang but was very low in the mix. Here I was thinking they were an all instrumental band because the instrumental passages were so great, but I think the soloing goes on throughout the whole song.
