[ATTENDED: October 23, 2018] Waxahatchee
I really can’t get over how many artists I have seen twice this year.
I saw Waxahatchee back in April. Katie Crutchfield and her band headlined Union Transfer. I had no idea that she would be opening for Courtney Barnett when Courtney came back through town, but there she was.
I had enjoyed her set and was looking forward to hearing her and her band again.
So I was a little disappointed to find out that this iteration of Waxahatchee was just her. Katie has a wonderful voice and writes pretty songs. But when I saw them in April, I found the few acoustic solo songs she did to be a bit slow for my tastes. Plus her band was so good!
So, this turned out to be a 45 minute set with just Katie on guitar. For a few songs in the middle she had some electric guitar assistance from Katie Harkin, the keyboardist/guitarist for Courtney Barnett. But, interestingly enough, Katie Cructhfield said that Katie Harkin played on Waxahatchee’s last album which they recorded just down the road
Harkin also toured with Sleater-Kinney and when Kurt Vile & Courtney Barnett toured together. Basically, she is awesome.
I wound up being a little distracted during the set because both my son and my daughter texted and called me about homework problems (I waited until intermission to call back).
She started off with a Lucinda Williams cover “Fruits of My Labor” and then played a song from her new EP. It was followed by what I think was a brand new song.
The EP is a collection of songs that she wrote a while back for a group called Great Thunder. They are solo acoustic songs, which explains this solo acoustic tour.
Then she brought Katie Harkin out to the stage. Katie sat off to the far side playing electric accompaniment while Katie Crutchfield sang four songs from the album they did together–the more rocking and band oriented Out in the Storm. My favorite Waxahtachee song is “Sparks Fly” so I was really happy that they played it.
The she went into her back catalog, playing a song from Cerulean Sky and one from American Weekend.
She finished with a cover of Kevin Morby’s “Downtown’s Lights” (which is what she ended her show with last time) and a beautiful La Loose from Ivy Tripp.
She sounded great, but as S. said after the set. That was good but it didn’t get me pumped up for Courtney.
