[ATTENDED: October 5, 2017] Pierce Brothers
This new construction on the way to Philly is really cramping my style.
I got to Union Transfer about 15 minutes late (unavoidable this time). And that delay meant I missed some of the best supporting act that I’d never heard of before.
Pierce Brothers are Australian twins Jack and Patrick Pierce (that’s Jack on the left). I saw three or four songs–walking in during a rollicking “Genevieve” that had the crowd going utterly nuts.
I don’t know what the crowd (which was quite large when I arrived) was like when the guys first started, but we were eating out of their hands by the time of this song.
During “Genevieve,” Jack was on electric guitar while Patrick played acoustic and sang lead. Jack was jumping around and inciting us all to sing along and have a great time.
For the next song–I don’t really know what the other songs were called “Genevieve” was easy since they sang it about 50 times–Jack put down his guitar and picked up some drums sticks. He also picked up a harmonica for Patrick to play and then he started playing the didgeridoo. And it was all romping and fast. By mid song Jack was hitting everything with his drum sticks including Patrick’s guitar.
Given the popularity of bands like Mumford and Lumineers, I can see these guys getting huge. Plus they’re very funny, personable and unpretentious. And they have a didgeridoo.
For the final song, Jack asked: “Do you trust me? Squat down.” Everyone squatted which is how I got this full clear photo. And then as the song built it was time to Jump! and we all jumped in unison.
They told us is was their first tour in the U.S., although I see they have played to many people in other countries. I could have watched them for 30 minutes more.
Definitely check them out when they come to a venue near you.
