Buzz Cola was a tie-in to the Simpsons Movie. I love the Simpsons, and although I gave up on trying to keep up with their merchandising machine (geez, how could ANYONE keep up with that?) I figured I could take a stab at a fun, cheap item). But, when I saw these at the 7-11, I bought one to taste and one to save. Well, it tastes awful. It’s a very cheap tasting cola, worse than even supermarket brands. But it’s a nice souvenir!

Don’t worry, I’m not turning into Junk Food Blog!
But I felt compelled to document this experiment since I can no longer recall my thoughts of New Coke, Pepsi Clear, or OK Soda. Nevertheless, I have many friends who love to try every new product that comes out. There was much discussion about the Mach 4 razor, and various new sodas and snacks that have been launched over the years. I am not one of those people. I do admit to enjoying the occasional weird sounding concoction. Like when I first found out that Cel-Ray soda was for real, I had to try it (it’s disgusting!). I have a friend who works for M&M/Mars, and when he told me about a new Mint Three Musketeers bar coming out, I was too revolted to even think about trying it. I mean, honestly.
I understand that companies need to come up with new ideas, or else they simply rest on their one or two products. But most of the time, the ideas are lame at best or disgusting at worst. I mean Oreo Cereal? Ew. Or take something like Fresca, a drink I enjoy when I’m feeling nostalgic for the saccharine-fueled 70s (and, of course, Tab, glorious Tab!). Fresca had something of a resurgence a few years ago, as far as I can tell, as it was suddenly on supermarket shelves. And then, about three months ago they seem to have repackaged it as a hip young drink, with techie computer looking letters on it, all the while seemingly oblivious to the fact that it is a grapefruit soda! Of course, now they have two new flavors, but honestly, who will drink those?
But this candy bar was something interesting.
Now, I’m not an Elvis fan, not in any way. In fact, the only Elvis songs I like are covers of songs he made famous (Fine Young Cannibals’ “Suspicious Minds” is simply fantastic, and Nick Cave’s “In the Ghetto” is amazing). But the concept of Elvis’ sandwiches has always been a source of fascination. So, when they try and stick it in a Reese’s (one of my favorite candies) I figured I’d give it a shot.
And, it wasn’t nearly as disgusting as I figured it would be. I won’t be having another one (well, I’ll have the second on in the package), but it was quite a mild (although completely artificial) banana flavor. So mild in fact that you almost can’t taste it. Not a waste of 89 cents, but a safe bet not to spend any more.
