[DID NOT ATTEND: June 28, 2025] Strand of Oaks / Stella Ruze

I have seen Strand of Oaks five times.  I always think I’ve seen them more because I had planned to go to all of the Winter Specials that he played in Philly.  But I haven’t gone to that many, although the last one was great.

When he announced this Concert Under the Stars, I immediately penciled it in.  And then about a week later I saw that Babymetal was playing the same night in a venue that would allow us to see them pretty well.  So I grabbed two tickets for Babymetal and knew I’d have to wait to see Strand of Oaks again–maybe this winter?

I assumed that Stella Ruze was a folk singer.  Turns out they are a roots rock band from Philly.  “They blend four-part vocal harmonies and horn arrangements into a new, genre-bending sound.”  I’m not sure how genre-bending their sound actually is.  It’s kind of folky and sounds like it woul dbe great to hear at an open air show.

[DID NOT ATTEND: August 7, 2024] The New Pornographers / Gustaf

I saw New Pornographers’ back in 2019 (I didn’t realize it was quite so long ago).  I enjoyed the show quite a lot.  And almost wondered if I didn’t need to see them again since they played pretty much everything I wanted to see.  And yet, they were really good and I enjoyed the show a lot–I suspect they are always worth seeing.

This was yet another show at the Concert Under the Stars in King of Prussia, which I think would be pretty fun to go to, but KoP is pretty far.  And this night was out of the question as my daughter was showing at the 4H Fair. Plus, we could have seen them in Jersey City the night before (which we didn’t).

The weather was terrible so they moved the show to Ardmore Music Hall.  And the 4H Fair was cancelled.  In theory we could have gone to this one.  But then my daughter was called in to do her show even though the Fair was closed to outsiders.  So we went there instead.

I was actually really excited to see Gustaf who I saw open for Idles almost three years ago.  I’ve wanted to see them again because they were outstanding.  But again, sometimes things prevent you from doing what you want to do.

[DID NOT ATTEND: July 24, 2024] Kathleen Edwards / Ken Yates [rescheduled from June 19]

I once thought that I would never get to see Kathleen Edwards.  And then she resurfaced from her coffee shop and I saw her three times in a year.

I would have liked to see her at this show (I saw her at an outdoor show two years ago) but King of Prussia is really far.  And then the whole tour was postponed because she and her band ran into Visa issues (for the first time ever).

She managed to rescheduled the dates (I guess there’s a good reason to do short two week tours, they are much easier to reschedule).  (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 28, 2024] Dakhabrakha / Native Harrow

I saw DakhaBrakha about two years ago.  I had wanted to see them for a while, but the timing was right after Russia invaded Ukraine.  I can’t believe the war is still going on.

Their music is like nothing else I’ve heard and their visually are just as compelling.  Traditional music but with contemporary elements.  It’s mesmerizing.

I have wanted to see them again and they seem to be playing around the area from time to time, but nothing ever works out.  Once again, King of Prussia is just a little too far, especially if I’d just gone out the night before.

I am still genuinely surprised they haven’t played McCarter in Princeton. It seems like a perfect combination.

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 7, 2024] Say She She / Kendra Morris

My wife has been really enjoying Say She She as of late.  I was a little surprised that they hadn’t done a show in Philly in a little while and then it was announced that they were playing the Summer Concert Series in Camden County. I had been to this location once two years ago and really liked it.

We didn’t make that show (rain).  But two days later they were playing at another outdoor event.  This one was not free and we decided that King of Prussia was a little too far away.  So we missed this one as well.

Kendra Morris is a New York based songwriter.  She compares nicely to the soulful side of Say She She.

[DID NOT ATTEND: June 17, 2023] Strand of Oaks / Friendship

I really like Strand of Oaks, both musically and because I have a real soft spot for Tim Showalter who is such a nice guy.

I have seen them five times, primarily because he started doing an annual Christmas show at Boot & Saddle, which I really liked going to.  He did one this past year at Johnny Brenda’s and it sold out before I had even heard about it.

This would have been a fun opportunity to see him at the 37th annual Concert Under the Stars in King of Prussia, PA.  I do love an outdoor show, after all.

However, the show was a little further than I wanted to go and we had just celebrated my son’s graduation.  So it seemed like a good nice to stay in.  I’m sure Tim and his band will be back again, and maybe this time I’ll even get to the Christmas show.

Although a DJ on WXPN said that this Strand of Oaks show was the best show he’d seen all year.  So maybe I should have dragged ass down there.  Although I aslso see they only played ten songs, so maybe not….

Friendship is from Philly.  They were suppose to open for Indigo de Souza for all of her cancelled shows and theyn they were replaced by someone else when the show finally went on.

According to their bandcamp page

Onstage, bassist Jon Samuels is the only Friendship member who stands up. He is usually swaying back and forth as the songs bear down, pulling together and apart. Friendship’s new record, Dreamin’ is an exorable wave of motion, endlessly rocking between intimacy and loneliness.

I listened to two of their songs and absolutely hated each of the vocalists (I think they were different, if not then I hated both styles of singing that the one vocalist had).
