[DID NOT ATTEND: September 29, 2023] boygenius / Samia

Boy I tried so hard to get tickets for this show.

My daughter has become a huge boygenius fan in the last few months and when this show was announced I was sure I’d be able to get us tickets.

But indeed, they sold out instantly.

Since then, I have entered many contests, and have done everything short of actually shelling out $400 a ticket to go to this show.

The only saving grace of the whole debacle is that boygenius is playing the All Things Go festival Sunday night, so we will at least see them–even if it may be from a mile away.

And just to rub this in, I also couldn’t get tickets to the Hozier show yesterday, and here’s a picture of the four of them hanging out in Boston.  Since he’s playing in Philly Friday, I wouldn’t be surprised if they showed up to his show too.

Oh and Samia is also playing at All Things Go. She plays poppie indie rock.

I keep thinking that she is Sammus the rapper, who I am quite interested in seeing.

Enongo Lumumba-Kasongo, better known as Sammus, is a nerdcore music artist who raps primarily about video game topics.

Samia is not her

[DID NOT ATTEND: September 29, 2023] Hozier / Madison Cunningham

Back in March, Hozier announced a new tour for his new album.  My son is a huge fan and I was sure I could get tickets.  But I was shut out almost instantly.

Luckily, we scored tickets to the World Cafe Live smaller pre-tour show.  Which was awesome.

So I didn’t even bother trying to get tickets on any kind of resale site, especially since he’s not here at the moment.

But man, that’s two nights in a row at the Mann that I failed to get to tickets for popular shows. (boygenius tomorrow.

Madison Cunnigham is a young singer with a song “Hospital” that I absolutely love.  I don’t know much else about her, but I’ll bet she is a great opening act for this show.

[DID NOT ATTEND: September 21, 2023] Death Cab for Cutie / The Postal Service / Warpaint

Back in December, Ben Gibbard announced an upcoming tour:

The Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie have announced a co-headlining tour taking place next fall. The 2023 dates will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their respective 2003 records: Give Up and Transatlanticism. Bandleader Benjamin Gibbard will pull double-duty each night of the tour, as his bands perform the albums front-to-back. The trek also marks the first live performances from the Postal Service in a decade. Find the full tour schedule below and scroll down for a trailer video.

“I know for a fact I will never have a year again like 2003,” Gibbard said in a press release. “The Postal Service record came out; Transatlanticism came out. These two records will be on my tombstone, and I’m totally fine with that. I’ve never had a more creatively inspired year.”

I was pretty excited about this show since DCFC are so great live and that Postal Service album is pretty great as well.

As it turns out, the show sold out in about 5 seconds.  I was sure they’d announce a second Philly show, but they didn’t.  So, nope I didn’t get to see this one.  It was later announced that Boris would be playing this night in Philly and I would have been pissed if I had to miss them again even if for a show I wanted to see.

Warpaint seems to be an opening band for a bunch of shows I’m interested in and yet I’ve never seen them.  I feel like they should be noisy and wild, but they’re really not.  The only thing I really know about them is that drummer Stella Mozgawa is pretty dynamite.  They remind me a lot of Luscious Jackson.

[ATTENDED: September 8, 2023] Beck

My wife and I have seen Beck three times now and his shows are always fun.

It’s interesting that his shows tend to be pretty short–he does a lot of co-headlining tours.   He also doesn’t tour that often–3 tours in 9 years.

Beck has put out a couple of albums in the last decade or so, but he didn’t play anything from his most recent album (Hyperspace) or the mellow Morning Phase.  And only one song from Colors.

The show focuses a lot on Modern Guilt and Odelay–he told us that this was the first tour that the Odelay band had played together since that album: guitarist Jason Falkner (who played on the last tour andwas amazing), bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and drummer Joey Waronker (were both new to me). On the top row was longtime keyboardist Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. and percussionist Ian Longwell (new to me and excellent).

The set was a mix of big hits and some weird older cuts.  This being the third time we’ve seen him, this show was almost like a mashup of the last two tours.

Like the first time we saw him, he opened with Devil’s Haircut followed soon after with The New Pollution.  Notable was that bassist Meldal-Johnsen was a maniac, adding in all the weird backing vocals and deep growls.  He also bounced around and was having a great old time.

On the way home I told my wife that I was so happy for her because he played just about everything she wanted to hear–not always the case with concerts. (more…)

[ATTENDED: September 8, 2023] Phoenix

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is a fantastic album–wonderful French synth pop with insanely catchy choruses.

When they were announced as  co-headliner with Beck, I was pretty excited to check them out.  I didn’t know anything about their live show, but I figured I’d know a bunch of songs.

We arrived at the Mann Center and got to our seats about three minutes before Phoenix came on.  And what timing because they opened with the amazingly catchy “Lisztomania” which got everyone on their feet and singing along.  This pairing seemed to work really well as it felt like people were there for both bands and not just one or the other.

The stage was set up like a frame.  And as soon as the song kicked in, the frame was revealed to be a digital screen.  And Phoenix had a ton of fun with this setup.  Each song had a video or a scene behind it.  And most of them looked completely realistic.

So the band was playing in an opulent room, or on a classical ruin or a deserted wasteland.  Or, there were optical illusions floating around behind them.  It was amazing.  And it looked incredible.

I was also surprised at how many songs I didn’t know.  I just assumed it would be hit after hit.  And maybe it was an I just don’t know the hits.  But they played three songs from their debut album United which I had never heard of.

The band was set up so that on the ground level there were four of them: Thomas Mars – lead vocals ; Deck d’Arcy – bass, keyboards ; Laurent Brancowitz – lead guitar, keyboards ; Christian Mazzalai – guitar.  Granted I’m not sure who was who–I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a picture of them before.  On the upper level were the two touring musicians: Robin Coudert – keyboards, percussion ; Thomas Hedlund – drums.  These two were amazing to watch, especially Hedlund who was an absolute maniac on the drums.  In fact, I tend to think of Phoenix’s music as being not all that interesting drumwise–it’s pretty standard beat-keeping for the drums.  But Hedlund was great–fills, standing up and crashing the drums.  And when Coudert played snare along with him it was so loud!

They did an amazing job of mixing up the setlist.  With several songs from Wolfgang up front including in a mashup with a United song, Too Young/Girlfriend.

Phoenix has a new album out with some great songs on it, and they waited before playing them.  It took five songs to bust out “Alpha Zulu” Ooh ha, saying Hallelujah!   Followed soon after by “After Midnight.”  Then they moved on to “Armistice” (yet another song from Wolfgang).  The slow repetitive middle was a perfect lead in to the following song which I understand is a Phoenix live favorite

It is known as “Sunskrupt” and it’s a mashup of “Love Like a Sunset” from WAP and “Bankrupt” from Bankrupt.  The video behind them was incredible.  It started with a man lying on a grassy spot.  The camera then zoomed out and the distance was listed on the side (10,000 meters, 100,000 meters). It continued to pull back, into outer space, through the milky way to over a million light years away.  The the song hit a climax and the song picked up with the camera zooming back in, all the way to the man again and then closer and closer–.o1 millimeter down to millionths of an ångstrom, where I’m assuming we could see a red blood cell?  It was amazing.

Someone had been holding up a sign for “Funky Squaredance,” an early song that I didn’t know.  Well, they played a medley of that with another early song.  On stage came a personification of death who Mars sang to.  When the song ended, death was holding his head! Crazy

They played the super catchy “Tonight” from the new album and then one more new song before playing another medley from Bankrupt and then getting the entire crowd psyched for a terrific sing along of “1901.”

It was fantastic.

And just when we thought the show was over, the band started playing an instrumental (Identical) and Thomas Mars headed out to the audience.  I assumed he would stop before he got to us, but he climbed over the seat back, literally right next to my wife (we were both too surprised to get any good pictures).  Then he climbed all the way to the back of the seated area and walked around up there until he came back down the other side and then climbed on some people’s shoulders in the main front area.

What a show.  I can’t imagine the stops they pull out of they are the headliners!

[DID NOT ATTEND: September 8, 2023] Weyes Blood / Sir Chloe

When this show was announced, I was really excited for it.  Beck always puts on a good show and Phoenix have some really fantastic songs.

I saw that our opening acts were going to be Weyes Blood, whom I heard put on a great live show and Sir Chloe, who I knew a little bit.

Well, it turns out that this show was scheduled to start at 5:30.  On a Friday.  In Philadelphia.

So, yea, there was no way were going to see Sir Chloe.

And then the forecast was so ugly!  Thunderstorms near us and in Philly.  The Mann Center closes or postpones if there is lightning.  So we weren’t even sure if we were going to go at all.

I was pretty sure we would not see Weyes Blood either, but by the time we left (and made sure that we weren’t going to drive all the way there and then find out it was cancelled), I realized we would be lucky to make the beginning of the Phoenix show.

I like to blame the Mann Center for any delays when I go to shows there. But there was no fault of theirs tonight.  Parking was even (relatively) easy and unlike at Phish shows, the line to get in wasn’t very long at all.  In fact, no complaints about the Mann in any way.  It has made me rethink my overall desire to not go there for shows.  Maybe I just need to go to less popular shows. [DID NOT ATTEND: July 26, 2023] Phish

Ever since seeing two Phish shows in a row at the same venue, it’s hard to not do both show every time.

Last night’s show was great and the new song(s) were fantastic.

But after last night’s lengthy time getting in and lengthy time getting home, even with a friend offering me a Lyft so I didn’t have to fight for parking, I just didn’t have the energy to do another show tonight.

So I sold my ticket on CashorTrade and will head home for an early night, hoping they don’t play any of my “gotta see songs.”

[ATTENDED: July 25, 2023] Phish

This was my sixteenth Phish show.  I assumed I’d be seeing 17 tomorrow, but I decided to blow it off instead.

Primarily, because this trip from Prince to Philly sucked so bad,  I left work at 4:30 and parked at 7.  Yes, there was a donut run in the middle, but still.  My parking space was way back in the woods (which was actually kind of easy to get out, thankfully).  And I felt like I was surrounded by insanity.

This was my first Mann Center show where I had an assigned seat.  I thought it was balcony, but it was actually outside in that weird uncovered area.  The seat was pretty good.  Me neighbors were weird though.  Not very friendly–no one passed me anything.

I felt like the show had to be spectacular if I was going to even consider going tomorrow night.

And while the show checked off NO songs on my gotta see list and bumped FIVE songs into “now I’ve seen it four times” territory and one song into “now I’ve seen it 5 times” the show was still fun.

Really, seeing a band sixteen times and seeing a few songs only six times is stull a lot of originality, although I fell like they’ve been playing the same basic grouping of songs for the last few tours.  Or maybe playing the same venue makes them think of playing the same songs a lot.  (more…)

[DID NOT ATTEND: July 14, 2023] Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds / Garbage / Metric

I was more than a little out of sorts that Noel Gallagher’s band had top billing on this tour.  I just now realized that it was a co-headlining tour.  Which is better, but still.

I was surprised (but not really) when Garbage opened for Blondie when we aw them a few years ago.  [I GET that one, Blondie is an icon after all].  But Noel Gallagher?  The dude from Oasis?  I didn’t realize that his band of birds had four albums out.  But I also see that half of the set is Oasis songs.

The co-headlining scam is a pretty good one for bands.  Play for an hour instead of 90 minutes and charge more because its two bands instead of one.  But whatever.

Had I known this was a co-headlining bill I might have looked into getting tickets (although really, the Mann center is such a pain, that I probably wouldn’t).  We also wound up coming home from vacation on this day so that pretty much nixed any evening plans anyhow.

I did like Oasis when they came out (although I was always more Blur than Oasis).  But I find that when he’s not taking liberally from The Beatles, Noel’s songs are kind of bland.

Now Garbage, I love.  They were one of my favorite bands of the 90s.  I’ve seen them four times and would happily see them more if they would just do another headline tour instead of always pairing with people i like less than them.

I saw Metric last year and they were wonderful.  I would of course be happy to see them again, although seeing them in a shortened set like this wouldn’t be ideal (they played nine songs–but nine is better than none).

If this had been at an easier to get to venue, I would probably have tried to go.  And, like a kindred spirit who has the same tastes as me said, I’d have gone for Metric and Garbage and maybe left after to Noel songs.

[DID NOT ATTEND: July 12, 2023] The Head and the Heart / The Revivalists

I’m actually surprised that this show was at the Skyline stage instead of the main building at The Mann.  That kind of made me want to go a little bit more (but very little as The Mann is a pain in the ass to get to).

Turns out, though, that we were away on the night of the show, so, it did’t matter anyway.

My wife and I saw The Head and the Heart at the Met Philly in 2019.  Here’s what I wrote:

I had quite possibly the worst concert experience of my life at this show.  And I want to reiterate it had nothing to do with the band.  There may have been a song or two in the middle that I wasn’t too excited about, but overall, they sounded great, played some really fun songs and seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

I wouldn’t mind seeing them again to make up for this show, but I probably won’t.   I also feel like I never want to go to the Met Philly again.  I feel like it attracts the wrong crowd–rich people who are looking for a night out rather than fans of music.

Re-reading the review I spent 2/3 of it complaining about the people around me. They were loud talkers and drinkers, completely louder than the band at times.

I would like to see The Head and the Heart again, I think.  Although it turns out they released a new album last year and I didn’t even know it.  So, I guess I won’t miss them that much,

I just checked and this show is sold out, so I guess they won’t miss me either.  And it really sounds like an event I don’t want to be at.

The Revivalists are a band that get some airplay on WXPN.  I do like one of their songs but overall their vibe is a little too retroey for me.  They are probably a very good fit with The Head and the Heart, although I feel like they veer in a direction I don’t enjoy as much.
