[DID NOT ATTEND: September 7, 2025] James: Laid and Deep Cuts

Back in the day I rally liked James a lot.  I got into them through Laid and listened to most of their music over the years.  Although I stopped listening in 2001.  Turns out that broke up and reunited in 2008 and I totally missed it.  Haven’t heard anything on their reunion albums (there are 9, as many as they put out before they broke up).

A few days before the show a DJ on WXPN was listing all of the songs he hoped they’d play and I started to remember all the songs I liked by them. But it was too late to go by then.

Interestingly, James doesn’t come to the US very often.  They opened for Johnny Marr last year, and the previous tour was in 2016 (they played Kung Fu Necktie, which is so tiny it’s insane–they also played there in 2015).

Looking at the setlist, it was pretty good.  They played all of Laid, but not in order–they stretched it out through the whole show.  In addition to Laid, they played three songs from 7, 2 from Whiplash (which I really liked), 1 from Gold Mother and 1 from Pleased to Meet You.  The rest were new songs that I didn’t know.

So I’m not that bummed about missing it.

[DID NOT ATTEND: October 11, 2024] Johnny Marr / James

I saw Johnny Marr six years ago.  I can’t believe it has been six years.  I more or less didn’t bother getting tickets for this because I thought I had seen him much more recently than that.

Plus, when I saw him, it was at the TLA and this show was at Franklin Music Hall.  So good for him for upgrading so much!

But I had two other shows that I was considering that night: The Bevis Frond and The Lemon Twigs.  (more…)

SOUNDTRACK: A HOUSE-I Want Too Much (1990).

I Want Too Much saw a bit of a stylistic shift from the sort of generic indie rock of the first album.  Dave Couse’s voice begins to really come into its own with a lot of yelping and higher notes.

The album overall is more experimental, a good stepping stone towards I Am the Greatest.  This is probably the last A House record I bought (from Amoeba Records!).  And again, had I bought it in 1990, I think I would have loved it.

As it is, it reminds me, once again, of the era (in fact, this album reminds me a lot of James circa 1990).  The lyrics are slightly more deep than on the first disc, but I honestly can’t say that the songs really stick out for me.

I may have come to the party too late for this one.

[READ: August 20, 2010] “Los Malos”

This was something of a banner issue of Harper’s for me.  I’d been kind of down on the magazine over the last several months as I felt the really good stuff just hadn’t been here.  But this issue was packed with great articles.

I was keenly interested in this article because I have recently read Roberto Bolaños’ 2666.  That novel is concerned with the senseless and random killings of so many women around Juarez, Mexico.  That news story seemed to be just catching on in the mainstream press when it was supplanted by this new horror story that border cities in Mexico are hotbeds of drug-related murders (of men and women).  Strangely, I don’t know if the Juarez situation has calmed down or if this is a concurrent mass murder scenario along the border.
