[ATTENDED: October 3, 2025] Deltron 3030
I really enjoyed the Deltron 3030 album. Del the Funky Homosapien is one of my favorite rappers. Dan the Automator is an amazing producer and Kid Koala is the king of the turntables. Their futuristic band set in 3030 was a great combination of the three of them.
When this tour was announced–the 25th anniversary of their debut album–I grabbed tickets immediately. I brought my son with me (he was not born when the album came out) because I thought he’d really like the show. And he did!
After Kid Koala’s set, the trio emerged. Dan the Automator stood behind a massive bank of sound equipment, Kid Koala took his place behind his turntables and Del (Deltron 0) walked out and stood in the middle of the other two.
And then came the opening announcement from the album–and we were all thrilled.
Then Del started rapping 3030 and it was real. There were visuals on the screen behind them–perhaps videos from 25 years ago–or maybe new for the show. They often had lyrics on the visuals and occasionally, they showed the cameras facing Kid Koala’s turntables.
They played the skits and interstitials (It’s… instupituous!!) and then the familiar samples came on and each new song sounded great.
After New Coke, Del and Dan left and gave Kid Koala an interlude. Automator raved about Kid’s skills. He said that he (Dan) DJs but he uses streaming songs. Kid Koala is all about vinyl. He said that if your girlfriend or your boyfriend DJs with vinyl, well, they’re just cosplaying compared to Kid Koala.
He said that someone requested a song, but his vinyl was really beaten up and he said it wasn’t something he could fix right now. So he played two other things instead.
A couple of times Automator came out from behind his gear and walked around the stage to add vocals or just talk to us. Then he went back to his setup and turned on his camera as well. So his and Kid Koala’s hands were both on screen. I am so curious what Automator was playing. It was a long bar and he seemed to sliding his hand up and down the bar either playing samples or shaping the samples. It was fascinating and cool.
I really enjoyed the guys around us who were so totally into it and knew every word to every song. And I was really happy that my son enjoyed the whole thing. He said he had nbever seen anything like it (and he was pretty happy that we were so close to the stage).
The album came to an end and the trio left the stage. Soon enough Dan came back out and told us that Deltron 3030 was ready to release another new album (they do it every ten years). He invited a stage crew guy up on the stage with a boom box. Dan said that he was going to play a sample from one of the songs. I’ve never seen anything like this on stage–a guy with a microphone holding it up to a boombox while the music the created played.
And then the other guys came back out. What could they do? The played the whole album. Would they play something from the 2nd album? No! Kid Koala played the opening bars of Gorillaz’ Clint Eastwood, the song that Del raps on. And then we got to see him do the raps from the Gorillaz song. Something I literally never thought I’d see in person.
It was a super fun night and we both had a great time.
I didn’t bother getting merch before the show because I wanted to get up front (which we did) and then at the end of the show the line was way too long to wait. But that’s okay, it saved us some money.
