[ATTENDED: September 27, 2025] The Backseat Lovers-–All Things Go [Day 2]
There’s something about the name The Backseat Lovers that I find distasteful. Which is weird because I like bands called Tropical Fuck Storm.
I had no idea what they sounded like before this show, but I assumed if the curators picked them, they must be pretty good (especially since they’re all boys in the band).
On paper they’re a band I should totally like–described as psychedelic indie rock with a bit of a jamming component.
And yet I never really got into them. I’m not sure why
But the crowd loved them, even singing along intensely to Pool House. And that’s all that matters.
They certainly did some fun things like the way Snowbank Blues built and then suddenly dropped the sound. And I enjoyed the way the band rocked out the loud parts.
But there was just something…maybe too much acoustic guitar? I also feel like the songs didn’t really have a hook? Maybe if I was in a pit I would have been more engaged with them, but I just never felt it.
They played a couple new songs. Evergreen featured a different singer but he didn’t sound all that different. It was also slower, which didn’t bode well for my interest.
Because I did tap my foot along to Maple Syrup–particularly the middle section. Maybe I don’t like the sound of the guitars –but I did like it when the singer switched to electric. This turned into a jam which I enjoyed–a good bassline running through the groove.
The crowd went crazy for their big hit Kilby Girl (which I’d never heard of) and sang along to most of it. Interesting that they didn’t end with it. In fact they followed that up with a new song that I kind of liked, but it was another slow meandering piece, which I guess shows their new album will be pretty mellow.
They ended with one more song from their album with the hits and I enjoyed the slow and fast parts of it, but it just never grabbed me. By the end of the set I wanted to like the more but it just never clicked.
The best part of the show for me was at the end of the set when a woman behind me said she was looking over my shoulder and really liked my drawing of the band (see below). She asked if she could take a picture of it.
So flattering!
