[ATTENDED: May 30, 2025] Momma
Just over a year ago, I saw Momma open for Girl in Red. I had been wanting to see them for a while and an opening set is a fine way to see them. But I was really excited when they announced this headline tour and that they were playing Union Transfer.
I was off to t he side a bit–near Allegra Weingarten but with a great view of Etta Friedman. Last time it wasn’t entirely clear if the band was just the tow of them (as photos showed) or all four, but the two guys are still with them so I’m guessing they are part of the band now–Aron Kobayashi Ritch on bass and Preston Fulks on drums.
The set was largely songs from their new album, which was to be expected. Although I was really surprised that they played I Want You (Fever) (which I think is a huge hit) second! The crowd went nuts for it of course.
In fact I feel like they stacked the front of the show with the songs I wanted to hear because they followed Fever with Medicine and Ohio All the Time.
They had a pretty intense fanbase for a relatively new band and I was happy to see people singing along. About half way through the show the crew from Wishy came out with shots for Momma–returning the favor from earlier, clearly. It’s always fun when the bands on the bill get along and actually interact during the show.
Then they played a bunch of newer songs, including the rocking Bottle Blonde, which I have to assume is the next single, its really catchy. They played two more songs from Household Name during the set including the fantastic Motorbike.
And then they headed for an encore break.
Like last time I was really impressed with their close harmonies. Allegra had a slow ballad that she sang by herself and I believe Etta did as well. But mostly I was there for the rockers.
There was a young woman next to me who couldn’t wait for Speeding 72 (understandably), but they started the encore with a single from 2019! And then they launched into Speeding 72 (with Etta on bass) and the crowd went berserk.
I’m always curious shy a band doesn’t play all of the songs from the new album–why did they leave out Take Me with You? I mean, they only played for an hour and fifteen minutes so they clearly had time. The short show was actually perfect, we got all of the songs we wanted and there was no nonsense.
After the show the band posted something about 40 year old men with no kids standing in front of the young girls who can’t see. I of course assumed they meant me but I wasn’t near the front, so I have to assume someone else was up there.
